Movies on Blu-Ray
Grand Piano (Eugenio Mira) Moments before his comeback performance, a concert pianist who suffers from stage fright discovers a note written on his music sheet. Starring Elijah Wood, John Cusack, and Kerry Bishé
If you want to see Elijah Wood rock out on a piano for a good hour or so while trying to keep his head, this is the movie for you. There is so much intensity and beautiful cinematography that there isn’t a moment you can afford to look away from the screen. And the music, the incredibly moving and heart pumping music is big and electrifying. Everything about this movie is pure win, regardless of the goofy third act; that’s part of its charm.
On a technical stand point, watching the special features and all that was involved with the filmmaking is pure genius. Elijah Wood isn’t playing the piano at all times, (spoiler alert) movie magic happens, but it’s very believable and awesome to see how he prepared for the role. Definitely one of the best suspense thrillers of late that keeps you on your toes the entire time. BUY IT! Special features included are:
- The making of Grand Piano
- Soundtrack
- Coaches
- Following Eugenio
- Stunts
- Visual effects
- Wayne’s shot
- Interviews
- AXS TV: a look at Grand Piano
The Monuments Men (George Clooney) An unlikely World War II platoon are tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners. Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett
Now this movie is a surprising bore. Regardless of the phenomenal cast, there is really nothing that works well in The Monuments Men. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features included are:
- A woman amongst the Monuments Men
- Deleted scenes (Blu-ray only)
- George Clooney’s Mission (Blu-ray only)
- In their own words (Blu-ray only)
- Marshalling the troops (Blu-ray only)
3 Days to Kill (McG) A dying Secret Service Agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment. Starring Kevin Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen, and Amber Heard
From the man that brought us The O.C. comes a Kevin Costner action flick that doesn’t pull any punches. A solid RENT! Special features includes:
- Theatrical version and extended version
- Covert Operation
- McG’s Method
- The making of 3 Days to Kill
- Closed Captioned
Pompeii (Paul W.S. Anderson) A slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him. Starring Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
This movie looks like crap on a cracker. I know I shouldn’t expect much from director Paul W.S. Anderson, but the guy did bring Mortal Kombat to the big screen. But I would say avoid this movie at all cost. SKIP IT! Special features included are:
- Filmmakers’ Commentary
- The Assembly – Cast and characters
- The volcanic eruption
- special effects
- 20 deleted and alternate scenes (Blu-ray only)
- The Gladiators – stunts (Blu-ray only)
- The journey – Productin Design (Blu-ray only)
- The costume shop – Costume Design (Blu-ray only)
- Pompeii: Buried in time (Blu-ray only)
About Last Night (Steve Pink) Follow two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world. Starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, and Joy Bryant
Despite the fact that this remake got some decent praise, I was never able to make it out to see About Last Night, because life happened. But personally I wouldn’t mind checking this out if it hits streaming. RENT IT! Special features includes:
- An un-romantic comedy
- I Love You?
- About Last Night Advice
- Word on the street
Vampire Academy (Mark Waters) Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story. Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, and Gabriel Byrne
This movie is complete trash. It’s better than The Host or The Immortal Instruments, but Vampire Academy continues the long streak of terrible YA movies that solidify the genre as a bad investment (Read my full review here). SKIP IT! Special features included are:
- Alternate opening
- Deleted scenes
- A conversation with author Richelle Mead
Raze (Josh C. Waller) – DVD Release – Raze on two abducted women and 50 other women who are forced to fight each other using their bare hands. Starring Zoë Bell, Rachel Nichols, and Tracie Thoms
I read a brief synopsis for this movie and the press release and got all excited to see this film. I had even heard from somewhere that Raze is a interesting watch. Boy were they wrong. The fights were decent and brutal, you feel every punch and kick, but there is absolutely no substance. Raze has nothing to say and the dialogue is pretty terrible. The characters and the concept are what keep the film afloat, but it’s pretty much a waste of time. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX IF YOU’RE REALLY BORED! Luckily there are a lot of special features if you do plan on checking it out:
- Commentary Josh Waller, Zöe Bell, Andrew Pagana, and Kenny Gage
- Cast & crew interviews
- Behind the scenes featurette
- Deleted scenes
- Raze: the fights
- Extended fights
- Behind the scenes
- Gag reel
- Original short film
- Alternate poster gallery
Television on Blu-Ray
Nikita: The Complete Fourth and Final Season (Joel Surnow) A rogue assassin returns to take down the secret organization that trained her. Starring Maggie Q, Shane West, and Lyndsy Fonseca
I’ve never seen the show, but I’ve heard good things? Who doesn’t like Maggie Q? Sadly there are no special features. Wait until the complete set comes out with all of the goodies.
- No Special Features
Video Games
Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Windows; May 20th) The year is 1960 and the worst has happened. The Nazis turned the tide of World War II in their favor with a new, mysterious brand of advanced weaponry that, along with unrelenting force and intimidation, brought even the most powerful nations to their knees. Who among this conquered planet has the courage to stand up to the merciless regime? What man has the guts and the skills to save the world from the grip of this iron fist? You are B.J. Blazkowicz, American war hero, and you are the only man capable of rewriting history. Only you can save us all.
I’ve never played a Wolfenstein game, but for fans out there, this is definitely the moment you’ve been waiting for now that it’s on a next-gen console.
