Welcome to The Streaming Report for June 12, 2014. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Girl Most likely, The Haunted Mansion, The Muppet Movie (1979), My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Season 4), and more, which you’ll find out if you should watch ’em after the break.
There really wasn’t much in the way of good movies or shows uploaded to Netflix this week. My suggestion, binge through Orange is the New Black – the entire second season just premiered this past Friday. It’s pretty good. A similar formula to the first season, but with more focus on other inmates than just Piper.
Girl Most likely (Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini) A failed New York playwright awkwardly navigates the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year’s News. Starring Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon, and Darren Criss
I wasn’t a big fan of this movie – I actually fell asleep in the theater for a few minutes during it – but it had some heart. If you were interested in watching it, Netflix is the best format to check it out. You can always turn it off! (Watch it now)
The Haunted Mansion (Rob Minkoff) Workaholic realtor Jim Evers, his wife/business partner Sara and their two children are summoned to a mansion. When they discover that the place is haunted, Jim discovers an important lesson about the family he’s neglected as they attempt to escape. Starring Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, and Jennifer Tilly
I’ve actually never seen this movie before. But it’s a movie about a Disney theme park ride, that translated well for Pirates of the Caribbean. How could this possibly go wrong… (Watch it now)
The Muppet Movie (1979) (James Frawley) Kermit and his new found friends trek across America to find success in Hollywood, but a frog-legs merchant is after Kermit. Starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz, and Jerry Nelson
Forget about the meta jokes and the strange adult humor, this is The Muppet Movie to watch. The classic. The original recipe. Lighthearted and fun, this is what The Muppets is all about down to the core. (Watch it now)
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Season 4) (Lauren Faust) In the land of Equestria, Princess Celestia’s apprentice Twilight Sparkle is sent to Ponyville to learn about the importance of friendship. Stars: Ashleigh Ball, Tabitha St. Germain, Tara Strong
I have yet to be dragged down with the bronies of the world, but I have always been interested in checking this show out to see exactly why this inspired such a cultural phenomenon. I just really want to understand the in-jokes. I can’t believe this has four seasons. Just one more show I don’t need to binge watch and devote my little free time to. (Watch it now)
Here’s some other new releases:
- The Great Muppet Caper
- Three Men and a Baby
- The Recruit
- What About Bob
What will you be watching this weekend?
