Welcome to The Streaming Report for June 19, 2014. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Grand Piano, Wilfred, Oldboy, World War Z, and more, which you’ll find out if you should watch ’em after the break.
World War Z (Marc Forster) United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself. Starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, and James Badge Dale
Depending on what you like in your horror movies, this could either be the best 2/3 of an action horror you’ve ever seen or 1/3 of the best suspense/thriller horror ever. Despite its production hiccups, World War Z turned out surprising well. It’s not the best zombie movie out there, but it could have been a lot, lot worse. Definitely good for night in with your pal Netflix. (Did you notice I started every sentence with a “D” in this paragraph, weird?) (Watch it now)
Grand Piano (Eugenio Mira) Moments before his comeback performance, a concert pianist who suffers from stage fright discovers a note written on his music sheet. Starring Elijah Wood, John Cusack, and Kerry Bishé
This is Elijah Wood like you’ve never seen him before. People speak of the McConnaissance, but Elijah Wood is killing the horror/suspense genre. You cannot miss this film. (Watch it now)
Oldboy (2013) (Spike Lee) Obsessed with vengeance, a man sets out to find out why he was kidnapped and locked into solitary confinement for 20 years without reason. Starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sharlto Copley
If you were waiting it out because you refused to support an Oldboy remake, now’s your chance to check it out. It does a few things well, but overall it was a waste of time and effort on all accounts. STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL PEOPLE! (Watch it now)
Wilfred (Season 3) (Jason Gann and Adam Zwar) The story of a manic depressive man who inexplicably is the only one who can see his neighbor’s dog as a full grown man in a dog suit. Starring Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, and Fiona Gubelmann
I have not seen this season yet, but I love the first two. Definitely another great project Elijah Wood has his name on. Wilfred is a very fun, dark comedy that is not enjoyed enough. (Watch it now)
Here’s some other new releases:
- Jane Eyre
- The Muppet Christmas Carol – Y’know, the one movie where Michael Caine plays Ebenezer Scrooge
- Muppet Treasure Island
- The Smurfs 2
- Doctor Who (Season 7)
What will you be watching this weekend?
Look forward to more new titles from The Streaming Report every Thursday on TTRC. We hope you enjoy!
