American Ultra (Nima Nourizadeh) Rated R [95 min] – A stoner – who is in fact a government agent – is marked as a liability and targeted for extermination. But he’s too well-trained and too high for them to handle. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Connie Britton, Topher Grace and John Leguizamo

There’s a lot to like about the concept behind American Ultra, but the execution of the film is pretty lackluster. It’s ugly with very little behind it, and surprisingly Kristen Stewart isn’t to blame. Her and Jesse Eisenberg are actually very good and they have great chemistry together, it’s just a weak, lukewarm narrative that could have used a little more heat before serving up to audiences. The special features are fine, nothing extraordinarily insightful.

Turkey Hollow (Kirk R .Thatcher) Rated TV-PG [90 min] [DVD Only] – A recently divorced dad and his two kids as they travel to celebrate Thanksgiving with their eccentric Aunt Cly in the rustic town of Turkey Hollow. Exploring the mysterious surrounding woods leads the kids to discover the secret of the legendary Howling Hoodoo. When a scheming neighbor threatens to take Aunt Cly’s farm, the family enlists surprising new friends to help save the farm – and Thanksgiving! Starring Mary Steenburgen, Jay Harrington, and Chris Bridges

This I can’t say I’ve ever taken the time to watch a Lifetime movie in its entirety, but Turkey Hollow is exceptionally bonkers. The acting is egregious to no end with Mary Steenbergen chewing up scenery like she hasn’t had a Thanksgiving meal in ages and Ludicrous making a random appearance as the narrator for the paycheck. The only redeeming factor that Turkey Hollow has is its practical effects and puppetry thanks to Jim Henson, who helped conceived the story too. It’s the kind of movie that’s so bad it’s fun to laugh at.

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for August 13, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Two Days One Night, Doctor Who, HitRecord on TV, and more.

for a good time, call… movie lauren miller ary graynor

For a Good Time, Call… (Jamie Travis) Rated R [85 min] – Former college frenemies Lauren and Katie move into a fabulous Gramercy Park apartment, and in order to make ends meet, the unlikely pair start a phone sex line together. Starring Ari Graynor, Lauren Miller, Justin Long, James Wolk, and Lawrenec Mandley

I really enjoyed this little quirky comedy when it first came out in 2012. It’s a platonic, romantic comedy that felt fresh at the time because it’s inherently not about someone complaining about their dating troubles. In a way For a Good Time, Call… pokes fun at traditional rom coms, the subject matter is just a bonus. It’s cute, light, and simple.

Two Days, One Night (Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne) [Limited] Certificate PG-13 [95 min] – Sandra, a young Belgian mother, discovers that her workmates have opted for a significant pay bonus, in exchange for her dismissal. She has only one weekend to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses so that she can keep her job. Starring Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Catherine Salée, and Batiste Sornin

Two Days, One Night is one of the big ones I missed during this past awards season. The story sounds very depressing and I’m sure it is, but Marion Cotillard always comes through with a fabulous performance that it would be hard to think it wouldn’t be worth the journey. The film is also a brisk 95 minutes too, so I can only assume every moment counts based on the mostly positive reviews.

HitRECord on TV (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) Rated TV-14 [22 min] – A television show comprised of contributions from the hitRECord community, a collaborative production company founded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his brother “Burning Dan.” Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kali Thomas, and Rodnesha Green

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has become such a media mogul with HitRECord. I’ve never seen any of the work that is submitted or pushed through his production company, but I am definitely interested in checking it out now that it’s easily available on Netflix streaming.

Sunday Comic-Con 2015 Cosplay Photo Gallery

We finally made it. The final day of San Diego Comic-Con 2015. I hope you’ve survived the marathon of lines, panels, convention center food, celebrity sightings, big surprises, various smells, and more lines. What I’ve got for you is the last day of cosplay pics of all the wonderful, spectacular, inventive, creative, and magical people I met this Sunday. And don’t you worry, this may be the last day of SDCC, but this is not the final set of coplay pics I’ve got in the works. Stay tuned for more!

Weekend reflections:

  • For those who managed to go the distance and attend all four and a half days, I applaud your energy to keep cosplaying!
  • Again, Mad Max: Fury Road costumes continued to pop up, but I was surprised with the overall lack of Attack on Titan scout regiment troops.
  • I’m also shocked that I only ran into one person in a Star Trek uniform. Where were all the Trekkies at? I may have not been paying attention enough, but I really didn’t see anyone in Trek garb other than the one in the gallery below.
  • No love for The Fantastic Four at all either. I saw two Doctor Dooms the entire weekend.
  • And where are all the Avatar/Legend of Korra fans?
  • There was also a lack in Deadpools and Doctors too!
  • Harley Quinn is the new Slave Leia; last year it was Daenerys Targaryen.
  • I wish I encountered more mashups, but I think 2015 was the year for genderbends and crossplaying.
  • I really should start watching more anime and play more video games.
  • You can’t do Bane properly unless you can do the crazy eyes, as seen below.
  • Cosplayers dressed as Septa Unella made the weekend for me. SHAME!

Friday Comic-Con 2015 Cosplay Photo Gallery

Let’s continue, shall we? When we last met, I shared with you all the incredible cosplayers from Preview Night and Thursday of Comic-Con 2015. We had to combine the day and a half excursion due to thinly spread costumed fans. Luckily, we didn’t have to search far on Friday to catch the many attendees dressed – or some undressed – to the nines in their favorite cosplay attire.

Disney Princesses, X-Men, DC villains, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Studio Ghibli, and The Legend of Korra fans flocked to the San Diego Convention Center to strut their stuff. And for those looking beyond the usual, there were plenty of characters that reach all fandoms. With the budding success of Mad Max: Fury Road, I was happy to see more cosplayers taking on characters from the incredible film – my review.

Day reflections:

  • The folks from Nerd Chat Cosplay rocked it again
  • There was a spot on Agent Coulson cosplayer
  • Despite being an abundance of Harley Quinns everywhere you look, they’re always so creative
  • I will never look at the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange the same again
  • Mixing bodypaint and fandom to promote your mobile app is pretty smart if used correctly, as seen below
  • It’s incredible how some people can make human versions of Pokémon cute
  • The Samus Aran I met was very well done
  • I’m shocked by the lack of Kill la Kill and Attack on Titan
  • Spider-Gwen was also a huge hit at WonderCon. They’re pretty absent at SDCC
  • It’s my Dick in a Box!

Most would say we are in the Golden Age of television. Everywhere you look there’s a new superhero show emerging or a fun genre bending procedural popping up. There are a smorgasbord of TV series on every channel for everyone, and fortunately for Comic-Con 2015 attendees there will be a bounty of panels to attend.  The Comic-Con 2015 television panels include the likes of HBO’s Game of Thrones, AMC’s The Walking Dead, ABC’s Once Upon a Time, TNT’s The Last Ship, Fox’s Gotham, The CW’s Arrow, MTV’s Scream, and the highly anticipated Supergirl from CBS.   • Supergirl – In the vast DC Comics Universe of superheroes, the rich mythology of Superman, the planet Krypton and the House of El is perhaps the most famous and instantly recognizable. Enter Supergirl! Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El but didn’t arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin. Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant, Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head, Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world.   • Blindspot – Sullivan Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire) and Jaimie Alexander (Thor films) star in Blindspot, a one-hour action thriller from Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Arrow, Pan) and writer/executive producer Martin Gero (Stargate: Atlantis). Stapleton plays hardened FBI agent Kurt Weller, who is drawn into a complex conspiracy when a naked amnesiac, Jane Doe (Alexander), is found in Times Square covered in a series of cryptic tattoos…including his name on her back. As Weller and his teammates at the FBI begin to investigate the veritable treasure map found in Jane Doe’s tattoos, they are drawn into a high-stakes underworld that twists and turns through a labyrinth of secrets and revelations-the information they uncover might ultimately change the world. In addition to Stapleton and Alexander, the series stars Rob Brown (Treme), Audrey Esparza (Public Morals), Ukweli Roach (Eternal Law), Ashley Johnson (The Killing), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without a Trace).   • Containment – When a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, a vast urban quarantine is quickly enforced, forcing those stuck on the inside to fight for their lives while local and federal officials desperately search for a. Torn apart from their loved ones, the survivors trapped within the cordon are fighting against not only fatal infection but also isolation, fear, and the disintegration of society around them. But as they begin to gain each other’s trust, hope remains, and on either side of the cordon unlikely heroes will rise.   • Lucifer – Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar has resigned his throne and retired to the City of Angels, where he owns an upscale piano bar called Lux. When a beautiful pop star is murdered, for the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him. Is he actually capable of feelings for a human being? The very thought disturbs him. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell. The Art of Comic-Con San Diego 2015

Comic-Con International has partnered with the San Diego Public Library to present an exhibition that celebrates art as an integral tool in promoting the organization’s mission of creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular artforms. Providing unprecedented access to original art by over 60 comics artists, the exhibition traces the history of Comic-Con through art and provides a sneak peek into the evolving process of creating comic art. The Art of Comic-Con presents select pieces from the organization’s archives, including works by Sergio Aragonés, Howard Chaykin, Cliff Chiang, Michael Cho, Colleen Coover, Rick Geary, Gilbert Hernandez, Jim Lee, Dave McKean, Frank Miller, Marshall Rogers, John Romita Jr., Bill Sienkiewicz, William Stout, Babs Tarr, and others. The exhibition was developed and jointly organized by Kara West, the Library’s Arts and Culture Exhibition Manager and Gary Sassaman, Comic-Con International’ s Director of Print and Digital Media. 

Assassin's Creed Experience Comic-Con 2015

The Assassin’s Creed Experience returns to San Diego Comic-Con for its second year with bigger and more challenging obstacles that will have players parkouring and soaring through Victorian-era London. Course attendees will receive instantly shareable action shots of them tackling two of the course’s obstacles, the overhead glider, new to this year’s course, and the iconic 25-foot Leap of Faith. Additionally, fans who pre-order the game will receive The Rooks Initiation Kit, which includes everything they need to join Jacob and Evie Frye’s gang on their quest to liberate London. They’ll also be offering free shaves located next to the course.

Game of Thrones Experience San Diego Comic-Con

Game of Thrones: Experience the Realm [Thur. – Sat. 11:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sun. 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Paying homage to beloved character Arya Stark’s early days of sword training, the experience will feature an installation that is part sword-handling skill and part artistic process, to create a beautiful, graphic Game of Thrones-style self-portrait. There, they will use a replica of Arya’s wooden training sword to strike targets as they appear on screen. Upon completion fans will receive an artistic portrait made entirely of their sword strikes. Fans can also create sharable animated GIFs including being incinerated into ash by Danaerys’ iconic dragons and turned into a WhiteWalker.  Additionally there will be photo opportunities with the iconic Iron Throne and the giant sword used by The Mountain. Select costume displays from Game of Thrones will be featured along with a gallery of select work from the Game of Thrones Compendium Book, featuring original creations from the talented fan-base ranging from art, fashion, food and fans can pick up a limited-edition T-Shirt designed by Beautiful Death artist Robert Ball.HBO NOW subscribers will have a chance to win early VIP access.

NBC Heroes Reborn San Diego Comic-Con

NBC’s World of Heroes Reborn and Blindspot

Heroes Reborn takes over Gaslamp Square with a first of its kind 4-D interactive experience where fans will have the opportunity to access their own extraordinary pyro-kinetic ability.  Fans will also be able to take an animated “heroic” photo and tour through a Heroes gallery featuring iconic props from the previous series. Attendees can also discover Blindspot at Tin Fish restaurant in Gaslamp Square. They will be able to receive both temporary tattoo sleeves and partake in a photo op where their head will be placed on a tattooed body, similar to the character of Jane Doe in the new NBC drama. Also, throughout the Gaslamp District, fans can go on a scavenger hunt to search for and find the Jane Doe look-alikes. Once found fans can text “Blindspot” to a number tattooed on her body and receive the next step to enter for a chance to win $1,000.

As part of this immersive activation, each participant will use an Oculus Rift headset to be transported into The Last Ship‘s fictional universe, where they must board a cargo ship taken over by the Immunes (immune survivors of the deadly plague that has nearly destroyed the entire population of the planet) and retrieve the last remnants of the primordial strain.

Building on the popularity of last year’s The Simpsons-based “Homer Dome,” FX Networks will build a theme park featuring massive activations for The Strain, American Horror Story: Hotel, Fargo, and The Bastard Executioner. Fans will be able to register for the activations early by going to fxsdcc.com beginning July 7. Prove your fearlessness by entering a live-action virtual reality experience inspired by The Strain. FX is building a two-story model hotel to give viewers a taste of the era from American Horror Story and the chance to earn prizes. Escape the Forest” is the ideal duel inspired by Kurt Sutter’s upcoming medieval drama The Bastard Executioner. Visitors don the mantle of “warriors” and square off against each other to prove their prowess with a high striker, a cross-bow, and a final puzzle challenge that will help them escape the “forest” and win a TBX-themed hooded t-shirt. The Bastard Executioner will debut on FX this fall. And finally, step inside a giant 20-foot inflatable snow globe featuring snow flurries and a façade of a Waffle Hut – a key location in the second installment of the award-winning limited series Fargo. The stars of truTV’s hit hidden-camera series Impractical Jokers are headed to San Diego for the opening of The Impractical Jokers Museum of Impractical History, a specially curated exhibition that will be open to the public. Q, Murr, Joe and Sal will be present at various times throughout the exhibition, which will feature fan-generated artwork and show artifacts from some of the most legendary moments in Impractical Jokers history. It’ll be like Planet Hollywood, but funnier. Throughout the exhibition, fans will have an opportunity to experience themed activations each day that they will recognize from popular Impractical Jokers moments, including portraits from caricature artists, spray paint tattoos chosen randomly by a spin from the Wheel of Doom, and an interactive photo booth that will put fans alongside The Jokers. There’s a special signing on Friday from 3–5 pm.

Comic-Con’s Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive returns for its 39th year, the San Diego Blood Bank’s longest-running event: last year 1,403 pints of blood were collected over the four-day convention. That first year, 148 pints of blood were collected, and as the convention has grown so has our blood drive. Over the past 38 years, 15,387 pints of blood have been donated by Comic-Con attendees. Blood Drive participants also get goodie bags, a Red Queen chapter sampler from our friends at HarperCollins Publishers, and are entered into daily drawings for some fantastic prizes. Winners are posted at the Blood Drive sign-up booth at 6:30 PM each day (4:00 PM on Sunday) in the Sails Pavilion.

WonderCon 2015 Sunday Cosplay Photo Gallery [250+ Images!]

And on the third day, Easter Day, WonderCon cosplayers did not rest. They were not finished with their work as one final day of the con was left to explore and enjoy. There were a good handful of creative Easter Bunny/Jesus cosplay parodies roaming the Anaheim Convention Center. And like Saturday at WonderCon, from a legion of Deadpools to Warrior Disney Princesses, Sunday was also full of really inspiring fans who put in a lot of time into their costumes.

Observations that occurred:

  • I find X-23 and Psylocke to be my favorite of the X-Men cosplays I see at conventions, for reasons. Kitty Pryde is also great.
  • Cosplayers who dress up as Valka from How to Train Your Dragon 2 go all out.
  • Deadpool cosplayers ran amok more on Sunday compared to Saturday. I’m sure it had something to do with Easter, obviously…
  • We need more Fullmetal Alchemist cosplayers. C’mon people!
  • It’s always nice to see widely popular characters that no one regularly cosplays out in the wild, like Lydia from Beetlejuice or Daria.
  • Until this weekend, I never noticed how many people crossplay.
  • I saw two Negans running around on Sunday. Fans of The Walking Dead series are in for a treat that only comic readers have been privy too, and I predict we’ll see an influx of that character at cons soon – just like the Governor.
  • It was cool to meet Robert Franzese, the real Peter Griffin.
  • I’m surprised I didn’t see more appearances from Peggy Carter.
  • There were very few Doctor Who fans running around, which is quite abnormal.
  • And finally, I hope that after Star Wars Episode VII that people will find someone new to cosplay as other than Boba Fett.

And for those who are reading this for the first time and did not check out our cosplay photo gallery from Saturday at WonderCon 2015: you’ll notice a lot of cosplayers doing goofy poses or making funny, derp faces. I try to make it fun for cosplayers to breakaway from their action poses and bring in a humanizing factor to represent them as fans and people rather than just random people dressing up in costume. This series of abnormal poses has created some really fun character moments for both cosplayers and fans alike. I hope you enjoy!
