The Netflix Streaming Report: Journey to the West, Mean Girls, Bad Santa, and More

Now on Neflix Mean Girls Bad Santa

Welcome to The Streaming Report for July 3, 2014. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us Journey to the West, Mean Girls, Bad Santa, and more, which you’ll find out if you should watch ’em after the break.

Journey to the West

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (Stephen Chow, Derek Kwok) A story centered on Tang Sanzang, a Buddhist trying to protect a village from three demons, his emerging feelings for Miss Duan, the demon hunter who helps him repeatedly, and Sanzang’s transformative encounter with the Monkey King. Starring: Zhang Wen, Qi Shu, Bo Huang, and Show Luo

You could call Journey to the West a B-Kung Fu movie, whereas it doesn’t take itself that seriously with the action and ridiculous special effects. However, there is a really deep message that is profound and endearing to Buddhism and just being a good person overall. It’s really silly, but a fun watch for a Netflix night in. (Watch it now)

Lawless Tom Hardy

Lawless (John Hillcoat) Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a trio of bootlegging brothers are threatened by a new special deputy and other authorities angling for a cut of their profits. Starring Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, and Guy Pearce

Want to know what Bane would sound like with a slow, Southern drawl? Or you want to see Shia LeBeouf get a whooping? Or maybe you just want to see Jessica Chastain’s boobs? Whichever way you lean, Lawless is so-so prohibition drama that has interesting characters and has a twinkle in its eye whenever Hardy is on screen. (Watch it now)

Bad Santa (Terry Zwigoff) A miserable conman and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid, and the security boss discovers the plot. Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Bernie Mac, Brett Kelly, John Ritter, and Lauren Graham

One of the best Christmas comedies ever. Billy Bob Thornton sticks the landing along with this cast of ragtag misfits. Vulgar, hilarious, and most of the time offensive, Bad Santa will tickle your funny bone while embodying the spirit of the holiday season. (Watch it now)

Honey i sHRUNK THE KIDS

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (Joe Johnston)  The scientist father of a teenage girl and boy accidentally shrinks his and two other neighborhood teens to the size of insects. Now the teens must fight diminutive dangers as the father searches for them. Starring Rick Moranis, Matt Frewer, Marcia Strassman, Thomas Brown, Jared Rushton, Amy O’Neill, and Robert Oliveri,

A classic for kids and adults alike. They just don’t make young adult/coming-of-age movies like these anymore. There’s action, adventure, romance, and inventive fun. So fun they even made it into a theme park area at Disney World – last time I checked. A film all parents should introduce to their kids that is great for the whole family. (Watch it now)

mean girls

Mean Girls (Mark Water)  Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George. Starring Lindsay Lohan, Tina Fey, Jonathan Bennett, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese, Neil Flynn, Rajiv Surendra, Amy Poehler, Amy Gasteyer, and Tim Meadows

I don’t need to explain myself as to why you need to see watch Mean Girls. (Watch it now)
