During everyone’s favorite Chatty Cathy talk show, The View, Marvel Entertainment announced a huge change of character for fan favorite Thor. In a brand new era for the God of Thunder, THOR, a new series written by Jason Aaron, our main hero will now be a heroine. This October, prepare for a change of pace from Marvel’s Thor as she begins a whole new era of superhero. Read more after the break.
Not many details have been announced quite yet, but Marvel editor Wil Moss believes this new female Thor will continue the company’s long line of standout female heroines:
“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription. The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”
As stated prior, Thor, God of Thunder will be writen by Jason Aaron (Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cylcops). Aaron emphasizes:
“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
Marvel is calling this an evolution of the “big three,” composed of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor. No specifics as to who this female Thor actually is yet or how she is tied to Asgard, but apparently the male Thor will be unable to hold the mighty Mjölnir. The press release from Marvel also states that “this female Thor is the eighth title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.” Perhaps Marvel is finally seeing the popularity of Black Widow growing and are looking to capitalize on a new demographic to increase comic sales? We can assume for now that Chris Hemsworth’s job is safe and that he won’t be replaced by an actress anytime soon based on his contract.
Look out for Thor, God of Thunder issue #1 on shelves this October.
