News broke before San Diego Comic-Con this week as Columbia Pictures confirmed the release dates for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Sinister Six and the live-action adaptation of of Naughty Dog’s critically-acclaimed video game series, Uncharted. After a very weak showing at the box office this year with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the future for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was certainly, somewhat questioned. It looks like Sony will continue their Spider-Man game plan, but first they will launch Sinster Six in 2016, with Spidey 3 in 2018. Andrew Garfield will be pretty old by then to play a young college aged Spidey, how will that work out?
In this case, Sinister Six is more of a spin-off and is said to be more of a redemption story for the character. This is the first of several planned character and story expansions, written and directed by Drew Goddard, the man behind The Cabin in the Woods and Cloverfield; and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. Tolmach had this to say about the upcoming series:
“There’s no such thing as just a villain. There are villains by virtue of choices that people make but they always begin as humans, as characters. As flawed people; as tragic people. You know great movies have been made about a bunch of bad guys who get together to do something. Those are sometimes the greatest characters to watch. A bunch of broken people coming together for whatever reason.”
And finally, Naughty Dog’s highly celebrated PlayStation video game, Uncharted, an action-adventure story which follows the treasure hunter Nathan Drake, is set for a 2016 release date. Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Four Christmases, and Identity Thief) will direct the film. With the growth in technology in video game consoles, a game like Uncharted already has a movie like feeling. In addition to that, you personally are invested in the character because you are controlling his movements and his fate is essentially in your hands. With that said, does this movie stand a chance amongst fans of the game?
Uncharted will kick things off June 10, 2016; Sinister Six will hit theaters November 11, 2016; and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will follow November 2018
