Focus Features is bringing out the big guns with the official, full-length trailer for The Theory of Everything. With its debut in theaters on November 7, the Stephen Hawking biopic will surely bring buzz come time for awards season. With that said, see for yourself why Eddie Redmayne, who plays Hawking, may very well be at the top of your Oscar ballet this year. Watch the trailer after the jump.

I’m not all-in when it comes to biopics. Maybe I had a bad experience in a history class or perhaps that it’s just that I favor stories based on fiction rather than something loosely based on someone’s past. However, I am a bit intrigued by The Theory of Everything thanks to the leads: Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserábles; My Week with Marilyn) and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy; The Amazing Spider-man 2). It takes a really good leading cast to make or break a biopic. If you can’t believe them as the people they are portraying then you lose your audience as soon as the first act.

Although this is not a documentary, James Marsh is known mostly for his work of that genre on such films as Oscar winner Man on Wire and Project Nim. I have not seen either, but I have heard wonderful things about them. Another reason why I find biopics a bit unappealing is because of the way they are built. They are constrained in the way their stories unfold that there is little surprise to the outcome. Regardless, I think Marsh has the talent to make this biopic shine.

Here is the official plot synopsis for The Theory of Everything, courtesy of Open Road Films:

Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed. The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking.

Directed by James Marsh, The Theory of Everything stars Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, David Thewlis, Christian McKay, and Maxine Peake.

The Theory of Everything is in limited release on November 7, 2014 and everywhere November 26.
