Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for August 7, 2014. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with The Cable Guy, The Mighty Ducks, Rocky, Spice World, and more, which you’ll find after the break.
I apologize for being A.W.O.L. with this column the last two weeks. Comic-Con kind of destroyed me, plus there really wasn’t much in the way of good content Netflix was dishing out too. But look at all your choices this month!
The Cable Guy (Ben Stiller) A lonely and disturbed cable guy raised on television just wants a new friend, but his target, a designer, rejects him, with bad consequences. Starring Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann
Ben Stiller’s sophomore effort as a director. Jim Carrey at his finest. Matthew Broderick being stalked. What more can you ask for? Oh, just Jack Black being schooled in basketball and a plug for Medieval Times: Dinner and Tournament. (Watch it now)
The Mighty Ducks / D2: The Mighty Ducks (Stephen Herek/Sam Weisman) A self-centered lawyer is sentenced to community service coaching a rag tag youth hockey team. Starring Emilio Estevez, Joss Ackland, and Lane Smith
Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! (Watch it now / Watch it now)
Face/Off (John Woo) To foil an extortion plot, an FBI agent undergoes a face-transplant surgery and assumes the identity and physical appearance of a ruthless terrorist, but the plan backfires when the same criminal impersonates the cop with the same method. Starring John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, and Joan Allen
Nicolas Cage meets John Woo. That is all. (Watch it now)
Mad Max (George Miller) A vengeful Australian policeman sets out to avenge his partner, his wife and his son whom were murdered by a motorcycle gang in retaliation for the death of their leader. Starring Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel, and Hugh Keays-Byrne
If the buzz over the new Mad Max film had you all excited to revisit the dystopian outback, now’s your chance to relive the original Mad Max with Mel Gibson. (Watch it now)
Rocky / Rocky II / Rocky III / Rocky IV / Rocky V (John G. Avildsen / Sylvester Stallone) Rocky Balboa, a small-time boxer gets a supremely rare chance to fight the heavy-weight champion, Apollo Creed, in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, and Carl Weathers
Now you don’t have to watch the Rocky marathon on TNT any more with commercials! (Watch it now)
Spice World (Bob Spiers) World famous pop group The Spice Girls zip around London in their luxurious double decker tour bus having various adventures and performing for their fans. Starring Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham.
