‘Birdman’ Leads Nominees in 21st Annual SAG Awards

'Birdman' Leads Nominees in 21st Annual SAG Awards

In the immortal words of Shang Tsung from the hit video game series Mortal Kombat, “It has begun.” With the announcement of the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations, the awards season has officially kicked off. Ansel Elgort and Eva Longoria announced the nominees this morning with Birdman leading the pack with four nods. Find out who is in the running at this year’s SAG Awards after the break.

In years past it has been a pretty clear choice of who would take home the gold, but 2014 has been quite the year at the cinemas. It’s really anyone’s game with no true frontrunners to dominate any particular category. As you’ll see in the various categories below, it is a pretty even playing ground. However, on the heels of Birdman is Boyhood, The Imitation Game, and, The Theory of Everything with three nods each. On the studio side of things, Fox Searchlight has a commanding lead on its competitors with six nominations, while Sony Pictures Classics and The Weinsteain Company each earned four.

In television, HBO absolutely dominated most of the categories with fourteen nominations. Three nominations each went to Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. However, Netflix continues to make a name for itself with five nominations with House of Cards earning three nods and Orange is the New Black receiving two.

Despite not liking the film, I’m generally surprised Laura Dern was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Wild – she was the one constant I liked about it. Her spot was filled by Naomi Watts for St. Vincent, which is baffling to me. I’m pretty happy to see The Grand Budapest Hotel receiving some love for Best Ensemble, but Ralph Fiennes was definitely snubbed in favor of Steve Carell for Foxcatcher.
