Warner Bros. is full steam ahead with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. The cast has finally been rounded out with Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder; The Help; Doubt) reportedly set to play the commanding officer, Amanda Waller, in charge of the ragtag group of villains. Don’t let that smile fool you, Davis is one tough cookie if she is confirmed for the role. Learn more about this breaking news after the jump.
Now I’m taking this news as a grain of salt because anything from Latino-Review is based on here say, especially when they bait their articles with the word “exclusive” and then link back to a different blog’s quote. But according to the site, where the author states he “Wanted to finish the year off strong with a scoop I been tracking for a hot minute,” Davis has been offered the role if she can work it out with her schedule on How to Get Away with Murder – she was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
Within her tenure in DC Comics, Amanda “The Wall” Waller is a top-ranking U.S. Government agent who created and gives orders to the Suicide Squad, the team of super villains who are tasked to execute death-defying missions in exchange for reduced prison sentences. The two time Oscar nominated Viola Davis is a great choice to play the part as she is no stranger to the fantasy world, playing parts in Ender’s Game and Beautiful Creatures. She also played a hard-hitting parole officer in Disturbia.
Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer were also rumored to be up for the part, but I think Warner Bros. nailed this cast with Davis as the final piece to the puzzle. Whomever is the casting director for this movie is bound to be sought after this project is finished.
Davis will join Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness; Ali) as Deadshot; Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises; Mad Max: Fury Road) as Rick Flag; Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street; Focus) as Harley Quinn; Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club; Alexander) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (Divergent; A Good Day to Die Hard) as Captain Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina; Pan) as Enchantress.
Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is set to release in theaters on August 5, 2016.
