CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE Teaser Trailer is Big on Size Jokes

Warner Bros. is not going home because they are aiming big with Central Intelligence. The first teaser trailer proves there’s nothing small about teaming up the larger than life action star Dwayne Johnson (Furious 7; San Andreas; Hercules) with the widely popular comedian actor Kevin Hart (Think Like a Man Too; Grudge Match). Expectations for success should be high with this dynamic duo, but the film may flounder when they go up against Finding Dory in the same weekend next summer.

Marketing teams are becoming wise beyond their years. Using the last names of Hart and Johnson not only for the purpose of size jokes but also capitalizing on the fact that they can stand in for body parts too. Revolutionary. Genius. Beyond being blown away by this revelatory discovery, the Central Intelligence teaser is pretty funny. The story isn’t quite revealed, but the concept with these two actors has my interest.

Dwayne Johnson is a solid action star, but when you toss him into a comedy like this his performance only heightens thanks to his WWE roots. Kevin Hart, on the other hand, recently can’t seem to shed his funny man sidekick typecast i.e. Ride Along, Get Hard, The Wedding Ringer, and About Last night. His performances and comedic timing are great, but I wish he would step into more roles outside this comfort zone.

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s We’re the Millers is surprisingly delightful despite its faults and Dodgeball is hysterically smart. Central Intelligence definitely brings in his meta sensibility with dialogue and action that seemingly understands it’s an action-comedy. This is the first feature film screenplay from Ike Barinholtz who is known best for writing and starring in Mad TV. He penned Central Intelligence with his writing partner David Stassen – both have written episodes for The Mindy Project. So there’s a lot of funny guys behind this action comedy that should make for a good time at the cinemas.

And if Central Intelligence ends up being a flop, we can at least have this nice image to walk away with:

The story follows a one-time bullied geek who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent (Johnson), coming home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of the former “big man on campus” (Hart), now an accountant who misses his glory days. But before the staid numbers-cruncher realizes what he’s getting into, it’s too late to get out, as his increasingly unpredictable new friend drags him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed in more ways than he can count.

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Central Intelligence stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Amy Ryan, Danielle Nicolet, Bobby Brown, and Aaron Paul. The film hits theaters on June 17, 2016.

It’s pretty slim pickens in terms of new titles on Netflix right now, but if there’s one thing the streaming platform has proven is that you can’t discount its original content. I’ve never seen Mr. Show nor have I given W/ Bob and David a look yet, but I’m a big fa of Bob Odenkirk’s and David Cross’s work, so I can only imagine how funny this series is.

I’m only sharing with you the fact that I’m Still Here is available so you won’t watch it. This mockumentary is horrible and provides no value in its attempt to entertain or comment on celebrity culture. It’s a complete waste of time.

After Marvel’s Daredevil proved to be a hit early this year it was no surprise in the excitement for Jessica Jones. Bringing audiences back into Hell’s Kitchen, Jessica Jones takes us on a different perspective of the gruff New York City neighborhood. My anticipation is not just in seeing how well the first female superhero-led property will do and how she will be received, but I’m also intrigued in the idea of popularizing a fairly unknown hero. I think Krysten Ritter is a wonderful actress and I’m really looking forward to seeing how well Jessica Jones takes off.

HOW TO BE SINGLE Teaser Features Rebel Wilson and Dakota Johnson Playing the Field [81 Screenshots]

I didn’t know how badly I needed this movie until the trailer fell into my lap. As a newly single twenty something myself, the How to Be Single teaser could not be more relatable – and I know I’m not the only one who believes this. Based on the novel of the same name written by Liz Tuccillo, Rebel Wilson takes center stage in her first leading role alongside Fifty Shades of Grey’s Dakota Johnson; something I’ve been looking forward to since she arrived on the scene in such female powerhouse films like Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids.

In the How to be Single teaser we are introduced to Robin (Rebel Wilson), who is mentoring Alice (Dakota Johnson) as a newly single woman. Alice, still reeling from her breakup, is finding that the struggle is real to be single. She doesn’t know how to talk to guys, when it’s appropriate to use emojis, and essentially how to play the dating game. We’re given glimpses of a few other characters, like Alison Brie and Jake Lacey, but the teaser really focuses on Robin and her dynamic with the completely clueless Alice. It does lean heavily on Rebel Wilson and a few quick vagina jokes, but I am really rooting for this one. The moment where she poked fun at Alice “reflecting” is excellent and I was really feeling their choice of songs; “Worth It” by Fifth Harmony has been stuck in my head for a week.

This teaser definitely screams chick-flick – something I am totally okay with – but I am wondering if we will get some male insight? Who are these other “lonely hearts,” and will we see their dilemmas explored or will the focus remain heavy on Rebel Wilson and Dakota Johnson? Are we going to get more Alison Brie?!

I know this is a rom-com, and you typically can’t expect too much from these, but this is a plight that I feel is so relevant. You come out of a long relationship and suddenly there’s Tinder, you can’t respond to text in a certain amount of time and he liked your Instagram picture, but hasn’t texted back?! The whole thing, when you step back, seems completely ridiculous and here is the movie to poke fun at it. I hope it mirrors back what I’ve seen and been frustrated with. I hope it allows us to all have a few laughs and a collective sigh of relief that we aren’t the only ones floundering with how much of a game dating has become. Whether this film can do that remains to be seen, but I’m feeling good about this teaser.

In its attempt to bring back the sexy spy genre, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. succeeds to some degree thanks to Guy Ritchie’s filmmaking style. The cast is beautiful and the locations are extravagant, but the characterization and the plot are lukewarm. The Blu-ray is host to a decent amount of special features that if you liked this movie you’d be enamored not to fall in love with the behind the scenes process.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies [Extended Edition] (Peter Jackson) Rated PG-13 [144 min] – The Company of Thorin has reached Smaug’s lair; but can Bilbo and the Dwarves reclaim Erebor and the treasure? And, if so, can they hold on to it? Starring Martin Freeman, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, and Evangeline Lilly

I’m sure most who love everything Middleearth know by now to wait for the Extended Editions. They never lack in awesome special features and the additional scenes always prove to add more value in the story. However, including additional scenes to the already bloated Hobbit franchise enacts the opposite effect. The additional scenes bring hardly anything we couldn’t have already gained through the story itself and makes the experience even worse since the film itself is quite terrible. My glimmer of hope that the extra scenes may improve the story, but sadly they did not. If you do want this film, the special features are abundantly thorough and give good insights into the chaos of The Battle of the Five Armies.

Unfortunately I was not able to get my paws on this to review, but I think it’s still worth mentioning if you are a fan of Studio Ghibli like me. I think the price point, $215 on sale, is wildly too high compared to many box sets I’ve seen. Not including the collectible booklet or the packaging, if you’re putting a value on the set based on the movies alone they’re almost $20 per movie, which is what each Ghibli film typically sells for on sale. I’d wait until it price drops down to a more reasonable level.

Netflix Streaming Report: Master of None Season 1 and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for November 12, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Master of None Season 1, The Wolfpack, The Little Death, and more.

Master of None Season 1 (Aziz Ansari, Alan Yang) Rated TV-MA [30 min] – New Yorker Dev takes on such pillars of maturity as the first big job, a serious relationship, and busting sex offenders on the subway. Starring Aziz Ansari, Noël Wells, Eric Wareheim, Lena Waithe, Kelvin Yu, and H. Jon Benjamin [Watch the Trailer]

I can’t say Master of None is the best Netflix original series thus far because I haven’t had the chance to catch up on all of them, but what I can say is that Aziz Ansari has made a damn good show. Master of None wears its heart on its sleeve to deliver some of the most sincere, observational comedy about love and life as a 30-something struggling, minority actor in New York. It’s as if I’m watching a beautiful, cinematic adaptation of Aziz’s stand-up. Fans of Louie will love Master of None. It’s not as dark as Louis C.K.’s humor, but it carries a more endearing, indie romantic dramedy vibe.

One of the most peculiar stories I have ever heard of, The Wolfpack is a great, bite-sized documentary that was meant for Netflix stream. There isn’t a completely satisfying narrative, but the series of events told by the siblings endure is absolutely fascinating.

The Little Death (Josh Lawson) Rated PG-13 [96 min] – The secret lives of five suburban couples living in Sydney reveal both the fetishes and the repercussions that come with sharing them. Starring Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman, and Josh Lawson

Similarly told like Babel or Crash, The Little Death is a lighthearted romp that attempts too hard to interconnect a handful of couples through their unusual, sexual fetishes. The individual stories are better than their whole, with some working better than others. With all the best intentions, The Little Death is at times sweet and awkwardly humorous, but sadly poorly constructed.

Trainwreck (Judd Apatow) Rated R [125 min] – Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy. Starring Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Lebron James, Tilda Swinton, and Colin Quinn

If you haven’t seen any sketches from Inside Amy Schumer then Trainwreck might be a breath of fresh air. The film is adorable, sweet, and hilarious. The plot, though, feels a bit derivative. Trainwreck is at a level above most romantic comedies, however the final third falls into familiar tropes. It’s a great watch, don’t get me wrong, it might not be the revolutionary romcom you were hoping for.

The special features are fun. With a cast and team like this, the extras on this disc make for a really rousing time. Trainwreck is Amy Schumer’s first feature film, that she also wrote, so it’s nice to see her take on the whole filmmaking process.

Believe the hype: Terminator: Genisys is pretty bad. It’s not as terrible as Salvation or Rise of the Machines, but Genisys is pretty much useless to the franchise. It’s as if Genisys tried as hard as it could to basterdize the franchise with it’s overly convoluted plot. If you have kids and want to introduce them to The Terminator franchise, raise them knowing only the first two were made. The special features are nothing special; the most interesting tidbit is how they determined Emilia Clarke could be Sarah Connor. Covering special effects is probably one of the most wasted special features these days; computers can make things look fairly believable, we get it.

Mr. Holmes (Bill Condon) Rated PG [104 min] – An aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looks back on his life, and grapples with an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman. Starring Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Hattie Morahan

As depressing as it is to see the beloved inspector from Baker Street aged up to the point of senility, I like the idea of Mr. Holmes. It’s a very well to do movie that has all the best intentions with a performance by Ian McKellen that serves the character very well. The energy of Mr. Holmes, however, is sparse as it jumps back and forth in time recollecting a case long forgotten. I wasn’t expecting it to be as thrilling as the BBC’s Sherlock, but it didn’t have to be so drab.

I’m sure many Breaking Bad fans were torn by this series. I, myself, really enjoyed Better Call Saul. It’s absolutely fascinating to see how Jimmy evolves into Saul Goodman and the path he takes and the characters he meets. I hadn’t gotten my hands on a review copy, but based on all the incredible extras BB had, I expect nothing less from BCS.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Cast as Negan, THE WALKING DEAD’s Most Notorious Villain

If you’re watching The Walking Dead on AMC right now and believe that the situation Rick and the Alexandrians are in couldn’t get any worse, buckle up. It was revealed today that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been cast as Negan (pronounced KNEE-gan), the most feared villain from comics the series is based on. Zombies will be the least of Rick’s worries as fans of The Walking Dead will soon come to find out. Looking back, The Governor will seem like a drunk frat boy who lost a game of beer pong compared to the nightmare Negan will bestow upon our group.

It has not been confirmed, but The Hollywood Reporter suggests that we’ll be introduced to the maniacal leader of “The Saviors” – his group of post-apocalyptic survivors – in the Season 6 finale. With the addition of Negan also comes “Lucille,” his barbed wire bat that has made the acquaintance of many of Rick’s group, including one major character in particular.

I’m very excited for Jeffrey Dean Morgan to play Negan. Rumors swirled around that Jon Hamm was in talks for the role, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan has more gruff features that better suit the needs of the character as well as a filmography that has dealt with such grim subject matter. Jeffrey dean Morgan is probably best known for his portrayal of The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of The Watchmen. He has also appeared in CBS’s The Good Wife and Extant, and he will also have a small role in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice as Thomas Wayne, father of Bruce Wayne.

Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, told THR last season that he wouldn’t be surprised if fans of The Walking Dead didn’t meet Negan at some point in the not so distant future. He also goes on to say:

“What struck me, that I’ve always been excited about, is: We’re coming into the sixth season of this show. … And it’s the medieval part of The Walking Dead comic, where you realize that there are these isolated communities, but don’t really know other ones exist. But they’re all building and forming themselves with their own image. And then there’s a clash of those communities. That, to me, is really interesting and when it gets really exciting with all the action. It turns into this insane, near-apocalyptic landscape that we’ve never seen before. That is almost a reimagining and a restart for society and humanity. And that is such a rich thing to tell.”

Lincoln is not only referring to Alexandria, but also the Hilltop, a community that has been under the “protection” of The Saviors who demand half of the Hilltop’s supplies at certain times of the year. One Hilltop community member has also been cast, Jesus, played by Tom Payne (Luck; Waterloo Road; Wuthering Heights). Jesus is a key member of the Hilltop who performs similar duties as Aaron, scouting and recruiting local talent. He becomes a welcomed ally and friend to Rick down the line.

As a reader and fan of the comic, Negan will be quite the challenge to portray on the small screen. Not only is he a violent psychopath, he also seeks to liberate English language barriers one F-bomb at a time. (It’s almost too funny that the show can depict someone getting their throat slit like they did in Terminus, but will find difficulty dancing around a four letter word.)

Showrunner Scott M. Gimple also spoke to THR recently about how they seek to approach the character:

“There’s a particular story in that arc that I’m very excited for. But because we know where we’re going, we have some opportunities to play around with it and put some things in that will lead up to [Negan and Alexandria] in different ways, yet fulfill the story Robert told to the nth degree by utilizing some slightly different approaches: lineups and timelines and the whole nine yards.”

Are regular TV audiences ready for Negan or will his actions be too vicious to depict on the small screen?

The Walking Dead is currently running through the first half of Season 6. The second half typically picks back up around the second weekend of February, which falls on Valentine’s Day next year – a perfect day for red.

RIP Gunner Hansen (1947-2015); the Original Leatherface

Gentler than his iconic horror villain counterpart Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, actor Gunner Hansen passed away Saturday evening after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Confirmation was made earlier this morning by Gunner’s agent, Mike Eisenstadt. Hansen was at his home in Northeast Harbor, Main at the time of his death.

Born in 1946 in Reykjavík, Iceland, Hansen moved to the United States at the age of five to Maine. At age 11, his family would settle in Texas. A University of Texas graduate, Hansen would meet director Tobe Hooper upon earning his Masters degree in Scandinavian Studies and English. As they would say, the rest is history.

Aside from acting, Hansen had a career as a writer and editor after The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s initial release. It wasn’t until 1988 when he would regain his itch for acting where he would go on to star in over 20 films, mainly consisting of low-budget horror titles such as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Mosquito, and Swarm of the Snakehead. In 2013, Hansen published a book entitled, “Chainsaw Confidential,” an overview of his work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre wherein he revealed his salary for the film was only $400.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre certainly left its mark in history, laying the foundation for three sequels, two remakes, and a prequel; films which have starred the likes of Renée Zellweger, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Biel, Alexandria Daddario, R. Lee Ermey, Dennis Hopper, Viggo Mortensen, Scott Eastwood, Jordana Brewster, and Matt Bomer.

It wasn’t until after I watched 2003’s remake, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that I came became enamored in the franchise and fell in love with Tobe Hooper’s classic. It will go down as one of my all-time favorite movies.

Eisenstadt also stated that Hansen’s original screenplay, Death House, will be moving into production next year in Hansen’s memory. The film is centered around a secret government facility that becomes ground zero for a terrifying prison break.

Gunner Hansen was 68 when he died.
