Box Office Battlefield: ‘Post Grad’ and ‘Inglorious Basterds’

battle field

Here is your weekend update with all the few new movies coming to theaters for the weekend of August 21, 2009:

Inglorious Basterds (Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth) This is a must see. Who wouldn’t want to see Brad Pitt and a bunch of angry Jewish Americans invade Nazi France and whoop some ass? This is an action packed dialogue stricken Tarantino movie. It has everything you could want from Tarantino and more. See this film

Post Grad (Alexis Bledel, Michael Keaton, Carol Burnett) A cute little story that reminds me of my struggles through job searching. If you just graduated college and struggling to find a job, this movie is for you. A cute little romantic comedy that you could enjoy, especially if you’re not into the Nazi thing. This may not appeal to everyone’s satisfactory for going out to enjoying a movie. Rent It

Box Office Battlefield: District 9, Ponyo, and The Time Traveler’s Wife

battle field

I’ve got your weekend update with all the fancy new movies coming out this weekend of August 14th. There are a lot of limited small films so I won’t describe them all in full detail:

District 9 (Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope) The big one of the weekend, although some might not have even heard of it. This low budget blockbuster is already getting tons of hype as it shows a 92% fresh on RottenTomatoes currently. This refugee alien flick looks like one to see as it was produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings trilogy) and with such a low budget of only $35 mil, it looks like a big budget film. I would not miss this movie if I were you. See It!!!

Ponyo (Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Liam Neeson) With a star studded voice-cast and amazing animation work, this film looks like it could be something. I’m not into the animation thing quite that much, but the critics are raving that this is a film to see as well. This is a story inspired by “The Little Mermaid” and is about the story of a young and overeager goldfish named Ponyo (Noah Cyrus) and her quest to become human. I’d say this could be good if I liked animated features, but that’s me. See It/Rent it

Bandslam (Alyson Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens, Gaelan Connell) Mehhhh, An outcast (Connell) bonds with the popular girl on campus (Michalka) over their shared love of music, and together they decide to form a rock group and enter their school’s upcoming battle of the bands competition. Some little teen comedy that some could like if your a little tween or love Hudgens. This movie doesn’t look cheesy nor does it look horribly done, it’s just for the younger audience obviously. Take your kids, make your kids go. Skip It/Rent It

The Time Traveler’s Wife (Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams, Ron Livingston)  Looks like a nice little romantic drama movie filled with great actors. The story focuses on a girl who falls in love with a man with a gene that unfortunately causes him to shift through time. This looks like a new good one to see as a date. The story is different from what’s out there with romantic movies these days. See It/Rent it.

Paper Heart – Limited Showings (Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera, Jake M. Johnson) The love story about a documentary about love. This film is a great little indie flick that you have to see. Charlyne Yi goes on a mission to find out what love is in documentary form and encounters Michael Cera. Their relationship now becomes part of the documentary now and they must deal with the cameras. My review can be seen HERE as I praise it pretty highly. See It

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard (Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, David Koechner) Although I hate Jeremy Piven as a person and actor, but I do enjoy his films. This movie does look funny and could be a the one to equal the Hangover as the new comedy in town. The film does seem a little over the top, but that does not seem to take away that much out of the film. See It

It Might Get Loud – Limited Showings (Jimmy Page, The Edge, Jack White) A documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians of different times. Rent It

Spread – Limited Showings (Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche) In Los Angeles, Nikki (Kutcher) is a sexual grafter who uses his assets to enjoy the city’s richest women and their lifestyle. Soon he finds himself torn between two very different women: Samantha (Heche), a lawyer who gives Nikki more than he’s ever had before, and Heather (Levieva), a waitress and equally savvy grafter in her own right. SKIP IT

Grace – Limited Showings (Jordan Ladd, Samantha Ferris, Gabrielle Rose) After losing her unborn child, Madeline Matheson (Ladd) insists on carrying the baby to term. Following the delivery, the child miraculously returns to life, with an appetite for human blood. See It/Rent It.

They’re Here… To Remake ‘Poltergeist,’ Unfortunately

poltergeist

Hell has frozen over and has take then form of the remake of Poltergeist. Which has been given the release date of November 24, 2010. Can you really remake Tobe Hooper’s work of the original Poltergeist, well I guess it was done with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With director Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) attached since last September, the production has been in development a long time with a script surfacing last year, but so far, no cast has been announced and no information about where or when they might start filming. Thanks STYD.

My Kind of Angels and Demons (Angels)……

The new redband trailer has released for the film Legion. Legion stars Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid and Adrianne Palicki, written and directed by Scott Stewart. The story revolves around the last time God lost faith in man, he sent a flood. This time he sent what you see outside. So, what if God decides that he’s lost faith in man? We always talk about having to have faith in God, but what happens if it happens in reverse? God loses faith in man and says “do it over”? This is our approach to that. It’s also about a bunch of characters who are dealing with lost fathers or lost children, trouble between parents and children, dysfunctional families, and standing over all of that is this idea of an angry father, which is very much God in the Old Testament.
