Disney meets AMC in Spring Breakers, a film set to hit theaters March 22 – just in time for the actual occasion itself. Young bikini clad stars (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine) and a cornrowed James Franco set their sights on living the “American” dream. This gritty, yet colorful movie boasts one of the most absurd premises to hit Hollywood this year. Check out the trailer along with over 70 screenshots after the break.
When I first heard about Spring Breakers some time ago, I was fully on board. To hear that this film would take some of the most popular teenage starlets on the market and twist them into something outside their comfort zone widely appeals to me. And how could you say no to a wacky James Franco movie?
I’m all for actors taking roles that make us think twice. Look at Heath Ledger as the Joker, Jesse Eisennberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Ryan Gosling in Drive, Natalie Portman in Black Swan, and Charlize Theron in Monster. All of them exceeded our expectations, accomplishing incredible performances that many may have felt they were never suited for.
Although we have grown accustom to Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), and Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) as characters that are targeted for tweens, I love that Spring Breakers pushes the boundaries of their mainstream personas. Watch the trailer below and see for yourself:
Making us believe that these girls could shed their Disney/ABC Family skin is an amazing achievement by director Harmony Korine – husband to Rachel Korine (The Fourth Dimension) who is also starring as Cotty. Campy as it may be, James Franco also feels so bizarrely different that it works to his advantage.
The story is pretty much set up in the trailer, but there definitely seems like there is more they’re not telling us. Gucci Mane appears for a few moments and it is unclear whether he is working with Alien (James Franco) or if he is the competition. Read the plot synopsis below courtesy of the official Spring Breakers website:
Four sexy college girls plan to fund their spring break getaway by burglarizing a fast food shack. But that’s only the beginning… During a night of partying, the girls hit a roadblock when they are arrested on drug charges. Hungover and clad only in bikinis, the girls appear before a judge but are bailed out unexpectedly by Alien, an infamous local thug who takes them under his wing and leads them on the wildest Spring Break trip in history. Rough on the outside but with a soft spot inside, Alien wins over the hearts of the young Spring Breakers, and leads them on a Spring Break they never could have imagined.
I want to believe the trailer for Spring Breakers is holding back on us. After Drive, little indie films such as these can never be underestimated. I’m going to assume that based on the ski masks and sub-machine guns that there will be some intense set pieces. Hopefully this movie will go darker than what has been shown; I’d hate for it to let me down. It looks like Faith (Selena Gomez) has some conflicting opinions and there is a drive by shooting, but what else could Spring Breakers offer that will stir up the pot?
Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers will see a wide release March 22, 2013.
