Box Office Battlefield: Olympus Has Fallen, The Croods, and Admission

Box Office Battlefield Olympus Has Fallen Croods Admission

The weekend warriors for March 22, 2013 includes Olympus Has Fallen, The Croods, and Admission. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.

Last weekend, Oz The Great and Powerful was able to hold off its competitors with ease, but took a bit of a drop. Now with three more big releases in the mix, the munchkins may have to pack their bags and walk down yellow brick road.

Will the great Emerald City be able to stand up against Gerard Butler, funny girl Tina Fey, and Nic Cage this weekend? Get off my White House? This is the Box Office Battlefield:

Olympus Has Fallen Title

Olympus Has Fallen (Rated R) – (Directed by Antoine Fuqua) Starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Rick Yune, Morgan Freeman, and Angela Bassett

Synopsis: Disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 55% • Audience – 81%

Air Force One meets Die Hard inside the White House that sort of feels like Red Dawn. Olympus Has Fallen is a mishmash of various action films involving terrorists to the U.S. of A. and only Gerard Butler can save the day. The trailer breaks down a lot of the basic elements of the film, but there is a lot more to this movie than what they want you to see – which is good. I wouldn’t call it added depth, but I would say it is a lot more entertaining than you would believe. It’s a very violent flick and the opening attack on D.C. can be a bit jarring. Despite its many cliche beats, Olympus is a decent time in the theaters. MATINEE IT!

The Croods Title

The Croods (Rated PG) – (Directed by Kirk De Micco & Chris Sanders) Starring Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, and Catherine Keener

Synopsis: The world’s very first prehistoric family goes on a road trip to an uncharted and fantastical world.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 64% • Audience – 86%

I just can’t get over how silly this looks. The animation looks crude, the voice acting lazy, and everything about this movie just feels too immature. There’s amazing color and the world they’ve created looks like it was thought out, but the story and the characters seem so one-dimensional. A road trip movie with cavemen, with Nic Cage as the lead voice actor. No thanks. NETFLIX IT!

Admission Movie Title

Admission (Rated PG-13) – (Directed by Paul Weitz) Starring Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Nat Wolff, and Gloria Reuben

Synopsis: A Princeton admissions officer who is up for a major promotion takes a professional risk after she meets a college-bound alternative school kid who just might be the son she gave up years ago in a secret adoption.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 40% • Audience – 61%

Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, what possibly could go wrong? How about a very bland story with little to do. I could only assume that the actors give it their all, but it just seems that there isn’t much to work on based on the trailer. Nothing about this movie has real appeal other than the actors, which isn’t a good thing. The trailer sends mix signals of tone and I just can’t get on board. NETFLIX IT!

For those looking for smaller indie films, Spring Breakers and Upside Down both open up in more theaters this weekend. Along with those two previously released films, The Sapphires starring Chris O’Dowd looks semi-promising. The film is about four young, talented Australian Aboriginal girls in 1968 who learn about love, friendship, and war. Could be a feel good Sunday flick.
