And so it has been confirmed. That eerie teaser that debuted during the Spike VGAs last year has been revealed to be Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. At the Game Developer’s Conference, the official trailer debuted with an announcement from Hideo Kojima himself. Read on to see the full trailer and 43 screenshots from the game.
It’s been five years since we’ve had a taste of the Metal Gear Solid world. After Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, fans were left thirsty for more despite its conclusion. How would players be able to carry on with future installments?
When Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was revealed, it was made known that we would be getting another prequel with Big Boss as the playable character. It was also said that Ground Zeroes would be a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5 last year at PAX Prime 2012. With these delicious nuggets of information, MGS fans will be able to continue the series happily with epic prequels.
From the trailer and announcement from Kojima, The Phantom pain has a direct link to Ground Zeroes. You can see certain footage integrated into this haunting trailer taken from the Ground Zeroes trailer. Adding Garbage’s, “Not Your Kind of People,” to this trailer is just the icing on the cake. Take a look:
There are a few scenes that we have seen already from The Phantom Pain teaser, but this almost six minute trailer gives us a better look at the tone of the game. Hideo Kojima always loves to play with his audience and this trailer is no different. Mother Base was shown being destroyed from Peacewalker so the events here take place after and Big Boss is told he has been in a coma for nine years. How will this and Ground Zeroes fit into the MGS timeline?
The trailer doesn’t give us much, but there are a few moments to take into consideration. A floating gas masked figure and a silver haired cowboy were not named, but we could assume they are Psycho Mantis and Revolver Ocelot respectively. Perhaps these are events that could lead up to the instigation of Shadow Moses?
As far as the flaming unicorn and whale are concerned, The Phantom Pain is a bit more out of the box compared to the rest of the entries to this franchise. One of the figures who appears to be on fire resembles Col. Volgin from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Could he be alive or is he something imagined by Big Boss?
And what is Diamond Dogs and who is XOF? The questions Kojima leaves us are so infuriating that you could hug the man. He is so meticulous, that you can’t help but be amazed by his ingenuity and storytelling. And how about that Fox Engine, how beautiful does this game look? And that sure didn’t sound like David Hayter as Snake/Big Boss…
There is no set release date yet for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, but expect it to be out on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4.
