D23 Expo 2013: First Footage and New Plot Details for ‘Maleficent’ Revealed

Maleficent D23 Expo 2013

From what the house that Walt built has come to make us understand, Maleficent will be the “untold story” of the infamous Sleeping Beauty villain who may have been more of a tragic anti-hero than a nasty hell span. Angelina Jolie made a special guest appearance at D23 Expo this weekend to disclose new information about her upcoming film and share a special clip for the guests in attendance at the Anaheim Convention Center. Find out what was disclosed and the description of that footage after the break.

What was shown in the first clip of Maleficent is quite familiar to fans of the 1959 Disney Princess classic, Sleeping Beauty. It begins with the three fairies (Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, and Lesley Manville) flying toward the castle to present gifts in celebration of the birth of Princess Aurora.

As the fairies offer their tidings to the king (Sharlto Copley), the throne room grows dark and an uproarious wind picks up from within. We see Maleficent’s (Angelina Jolie) horns peaking out above the now silent crowd. She continues her approach to the princess as we see the shadowy figure grow larger. And then the big reveal, Angie in full costume as the beastly Maleficent – she looks absolutely stunning.

“Well well,” she cackles. “I must say I felt quite distressed not receiving an invitation. What an awkward situation.” At this point I’m sold. I’m eating this up. As much as she’s pandered to audiences, she definitely fits the role suitably well.

The king decrees “You’re not welcome here,” but his obvious threats are fruitless. Maleficent is now surrounded by a green aura and smoke arises as she begins to cast her well-known curse on the young babe.

Smash cut to future footage with an older Aurora (Elle Fanning) running and playing; the audience knows very well the unhappy fate that awaits her, from which she can only be woken by true love’s kiss.

I thought the scene gave off some pretty thrilling vibes for fans hoping to see a true recreation of Maleficent by Jolie. However, the animation of the fairies looks dreadful. The film is still well into production and I can only assume animation will be beefed up before its release, so I’m not too worried about it. Although the bickering amongst the fairies is kind of unappetizing. I’m all in for Angie, but the rest I’m cautiously optimistic about.

An updated plot synopsis for Maleficent has been revealed:

“Maleficent” is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Directed by Robert Stromberg, Maleficent is set to release July 2, 2014.
