Adam Wingard’s follow up to his little horror-thriller You’re Next, one of my favorites of 2013, has just released its first trailer. The Guest introduces us to David (Dan Stevens), a war vet who has been tasked by a fallen soldier to look after his family upon his return home. Knowing Wingard’s style, there is more to this story than meets the eye. What surprises are in store for audiences? Watch the trailer after the break.

A rising director in the horror community, Adam Wingard destroyed expectations with You’re Next. And unexpectedly, his next feature, The Guest, looks far and away from the genre. This film looks more like a thriller than a horror, but leave it to Wingard to pull our guard down and come out with something entirely unexpected.

I am not familiar with Dan Stevens, other than knowing he was in PBS’s Downton Abbey and the lackluster film The Fifth Estate. As a teaser, this doesn’t really give us much to work on. Is there a hidden agenda within David? I’m sure there is, but I doubt Picturehouse or Wingard are going to be direct about it based on how fun You’re Next is versus what the trailers depicted. Thus is the reason why I am really looking forward to this release.

Here is the official plot synopsis for The Guest, courtesy of Picturehouse:

A soldier (Dan Stevens) introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence.

Directed by Adam Wingard, The Guest stars Dan Stevens, Maika Monroe, Brendan Meyer, Sheila Kelley, Leland Orser, Lance Reddick, and Chase Williamson

The Guest lands in theaters on September 17, 2014.
