THIS IS NOT A PRANK. THIS IS OFFICIAL NEWS PEOPLE – IT’S IN CAPLOCKS! I would not do something sick like lie about the sixth season of Community being green-lit, unless it is April Fools’ Day of course. But it’s true, the news broke today that Yahoo! will be resuming the highly praised, cult comedy on its streaming site, Yahoo! Screen. My first question, along with everyone else, what the hell is Yahoo! Screen? More after the jump.
It was a close one Human Beings. Once was lost, has now found a home on Yahoo! Screen. According to Yahoo!, Dan Harmon will continue as showrunner while Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong have all signed on to reprise their roles. John Oliver, Johnathan Banks, and Brie Larson remains to be confirmed, but the real kicker will be Donald Glover if he chooses to return. Dan Harmon really wants him back.
Here’s the official announcement from Yahoo! Chief Marketing Officer Kathy Savitt:
And the crowd goes wild… the Darkest Timeline is over. “Community” is coming to Yahoo! Beginning later this Fall, tune into Yahoo for the highly-anticipated sixth season, with 13 new episodes available exclusively on Yahoo! Screen.
Dan Harmon had these kind words to say:
“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, BangBus!”
And front man Joel McHale also had some comments to the move to the digital world:
“The reports of our cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”
I can’t even imagine how much this show has played with the emotions of the fans and the cast with its roller coaster of lifespan. Here’s the reactions from Dan Harmon and the cast:
So what in the name of all that is sacred is Yahoo! Screen? Apparently the third largest search engine in the world is looking to take a page from Amazon and Hulu by creating their own digital content space for original shows and acquired content. Currently, everything is free to digest, but with very limited content. This move to pick up Community surely is a first step in the right direction to draw traffic to the online hub. If Yahoo! can continue this kind of momentum moving forward with new, original series then more power to them. If not, whatever, at least we have Community back.
Now about that movie…
Community season six will return this fall on Yahoo! Screen.
