Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to the billion dollar success, has begun filming this week in England. Walt Disney has released an official statement on the film’s production. Alongside the principal photography notice, the studio has also released the full cast list and plot information. Learn more after the break.
It was only a few months ago when Helena Bonham Carter was in negotiations to return as Iracebeth the Red Queen, but now we have a confirmed statement that not only will Helena be returning to Underland, but so will Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsleigh; Johnny Depp as the Hatter Tarrant Hightopp aka the Mad Hatter; Anne Hathaway as Mirana the White Queen; and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Many of Alice in Wonderland‘s voice cast will return as well, including Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat; Alan Rickman as the Blue Caterpillar; Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit; Timothy Spall as Baynard; Paul Whitehouse as the March Hare; and Barbara Windsor as Dormouse.
Joining the Alice in Wonderland veterans will be a batch of fresh meat, the likes of which includes Rhys Ifans as Zanik Hightopp, the Mad Hatter’s father; Ed Speleers as James Harcourt; Sacha Baron Cohen as Time; and Toby Jones as the voice of Wilkins.
Through the Looking Glass will once again feature music by Danny Elfman, a screenplay by Linda Woolverton (Maleficent; Alice in Wonderland), and is directed by James Bobin (The Muppets; Muppets Most Wanted).
I would like Bobins to not get carried away in creating a CGI heavy movie like Alice in Wonderland, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and Maleficent, whereas visual effects overpower the narrative. There needs to be less fantasy and mystical worlds and more substance with stronger characters. If the fantastically visual elements of the world can be integrated to make a compelling story, by all means be my guest. But for now I am keeping my expectations low.
Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass is set to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
