Although video games based on films and TV shows can be fairly risky for developers to create, the Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series is showing some much promise. Developed by Telltale Games, the same company that created the successful episodic series based on The Walking Dead, it could be that this game is in good hands. The Game of Thrones game, to be released later this year, will allow players to choose from five playable characters. The game will be the first episode of six and will be entitled “Iron from Ice.” However, fans should not expect the game to be too true to the book series as the Telltale Games blog has made mention of the fact that the game will be based off of the television show more so than the George R.R. Martin series that it was inspired by. From their announcement statement:

“Our game series is based on the world, characters and events seen in HBO’s TV show, which in turn is based on George R. R. Martin’s books (A Song of Ice and Fire). The events in our game series begin towards the end of Season Three of the TV show, and end right before the beginning of Season Five. You will visit familiar locations such as King’s Landing and The Wall, as well as unfamiliar locations such as Ironrath, the home of House Forrester.”

Gamers will be taking on the perspective of five members of House Forrester; either a member of the family or an individual that is in service to the family. Like The Walking Dead game, it is important to keep track of each character’s roles in the game because each action has a ripple affect on everything and everyone else. It is the players duty to navigate through The War of the Five Kings in order to avoid utter disaster for House Forrester. The Forresters have not yet appeared on HBO’s series, but they are canon to Martin’s books and have appeared in “A Dance with Dragons.”

“House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering ironwood trees. Built over fifteen hundred years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons, Ironrath is a testament to the strength and endurance of Ironwood. The Forrester house words are ‘Iron from Ice’, which echoes their belief that – like the ironwood itself – the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.”

Furthermore, the rivals of House Forrester, “House Whitehill,” will also be featured in the game. It’s possible that this will play a major role in the story. Some other locations that the game will explore are King’s Landing and the Wall.

Game of Thrones – Episode 1: Iron from Ice will be released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, iOS PC/Mac this December.
