‘Masters of the Universe’ Script Completed by Kick-Ass 2’s Jeff Wadlow

'Kick-Ass 2' Writer/Director Jeff Wadlow Completes 'Masters of the Universe' Script

Although the franchise has been recently caught in pre-production limbo, a Masters of the Universe film may be closer than we think. There hasn’t been any word on the production since earlier last year when writer/director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) was handed the script for rewrites. We now have an update on how it’s going. Learn more after the jump.

Many may remember Masters of the Universe as the series with the iconic 80’s hero, He-Man. It is difficult not to think of one without the other, considering that He-Man gave way to a number of action figures, a wildly popular animated series, a comic series, and now, possibly, a feature film.

Despite the Masters of the Universe series already having a live-action movie adaptation (a 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren and future Friends star, Courtney Cox), the film did little to boost sales of the pre-existing Masters of the Universe properties and the toy line was quietly shut down. Could a second turn and an edgy new script give He-Man the power to make it a box office smash?

A tweet from Senior Vice President of Columbia Pictures, DeVon Franklin, revealed that a new script was recently completed by Jeff Wadlow.

The Kick-Ass series is not exactly known for being family-friendly and politically correct so we can expect Wadlow’s take to be at least somewhat of a departure from the original Masters of the Universe.

Perhaps Wadlow’s fresh take on the Prince of Eternia will be enough to capture the interest of a modern audience while not alienating the older audience who remember Masters of the Universe from their childhood. However, this does not necessarily mean that the film will go into production anytime soon.

Nevertheless, the fact that a script has been finished is a promising start and we will keep you updated if there are any further developments.

What’s next for the future? Does this mean that a She-Ra movie could follow close behind?
