Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for their upcoming female-driven, summer comedy Hot Pursuit. Directed by Anne Fletcher (Step Up; The Proposal; 27 Dresses), the movie sees Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line; Wild) running from the cartel to ensure the safety of Sofía Vergara (Modern Family) to bring her in for protective custody. TV writers David Feeney (New Girl; According to Jim) and John Quaintance (Joey; Whitney) penned the screenplay, which will hit theaters on May 8. You can watch the trailer and check out the screenshots after the jump.
Like buddy cop comedies, custody/witness protection comedies have a pretty simple formula. Cop receives mission to retrieve witness or makes an arrest and then spends the entire movie protecting their human cargo only to find out there’s a twist in the crime at hand. Hot Pursuit movie looks to stray no further than the path the genre sets up for itself, maybe even more straightforward. Like an escort mission in video games, this film looks just as exhausting to bear.
I’m not a big fan of Vergara’s, but the trailer has me at least satisfied that the chemistry between her and Witherspoon will work. Seeing Witherspoon tackle comedy again could be fun. She didn’t have a big role in This Means War and in Four Christmases she wasn’t given much to do. I would consider 2001’S Legally Blonde to be the last great comedy she appeared in. Let’s hope she’s still got it.
