There are many action movies that get released every year, but few and far between come around that change the game and blow our socks off. And just from seeing two short clips during the Warner Bros. WonderCon panel in Anaheim this weekend, Mad Max: Fury Road is definitely that action movie that will raise the bar. After the jump, learn what we saw during the panel and why we believe this could be the greatest action movie of the year.
According to Drew McSweeny from HitFix.com who moderated the panel, this first clip takes place twenty minutes into the film.
[Spoilers ahead of course. This is your only warning.]
The clip begins with “Mad” Max Rocktansky (Tom Hardy) face down in the sand. He awakens with an iron mask attached to his head with a chain sticking out the back. (To give context, for those who have seen the trailers for Mad Max: Fury Road, we believe that this is a follow up scene from when everyone driving into a giant dust storm.) Max follows the chain attached to the mask – which looks like it’s part blood transfusion cord – and sees that it’s linked to a person buried in car wreckage passed out or possibly dead. We come to find out that this happens to be Nicholas Hoult’s character Nux, who we can assume isn’t dead since this is the first 20 minutes of the film.
Max drags Nux out of the vehicle to see if he can unlink himself. After a few failed attempts, he grabs a shotgun to blow off Nux’s arm. Fortunately for Nux the shotgun is jammed with sand and cannot fire. Frustrated, Max is about to chew off Nux’s arm until he notices another group in the distance has survived the storm. Throwing Nux over his shoulder, Max begins to walk toward the survivors.
We find out that the huge tanker that Immortan Joe’s gang was chasing after into the storm was filled with water. The group driving off with this water tanker is a gaggle of beautiful women comprised of Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton, Megan Gale, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoe Kravitz, and their leader Charlize Theron who plays Imperator Furiosa. While cleansing themselves with a hose connected to the tanker, the girls are seen breaking off some vicious looking chastity belts.
Totally, uninterested in the girls, Max only sees the water to his advantage. However, the girls, unknown to his allegiance are not welcoming to his arrival. One girl says, “We’re not going back.” But then Max pulls his malfunctioning shotgun on them. Thirsty and desperate, Max utters “water” – the first line of dialogue we hear him speak McSweeny says. Cautiously, one of the girls walks toward him with the hose, the camera pans down and she is revealed to be pregnant.
Fulfilling his thirst, he shuts off the water and orders another girl with the bolt cutters to release him from his chain. All the while, there is another group of people approaching them from afar. Just when we think everything is going smoothly, Furiosa tackles Max and begins an all out struggle for control of the situation. While fighting, Nux is continually dragged through the sand, constricting Max’s movement.
The action continues, beautifully choreographed and shot with means to be able to see what’s going on, waking Nux in the process. He sees that Furiosa is going for a hidden gun on the tanker and stops her from firing at Max. It’s now a two-on-one fight. The magazine from the gun is released and the girls and Nux try to retrieve it. As the fight wages on, Theron manages to grab the magazine, cocks the gun, and starts firing at Max who is down in the sand.
[UPDATE 5/1/15: JoBlo has graciously been given the exclusivity to premiere these clips online]
The second scene is very brief, and leads into a montage of clips. But essentially, the scene depicts the girls traveling through a mountainous ravine. A man comes out from the rocks and we find out that Furiosa’s group was tasked to bring this water tanker to this particular group of survivors in the mountains. Mad that the girls were followed, the deal doesn’t seem to go as planned. Max and the girls begin their breakaway and chaos ensues. This is when the montage of clips begin.
Pretty invigorating stuff. And if the entire movie is able to maintain the energy from the footage we saw at this panel, Mad Max: Fury Road will be an incredibly thrilling time.
