I love horror movies because of there are so many twists and turns they may take in order to terrify and disturb their audience. There’s never a lack of imagination that can be found because filmmakers can always stretch the boundaries of the genre to present unique stories never seen before. Enter Guillermo del Toro (Cronos; Mimic; Blade II; Hellboy; Pan’s Labyrinth) whose upcoming feature, Crimson Peak, just obtained its first official trailer. There may be more to this ghost story than meets the eye. Watch the trailer after the break.
I’m getting a sort of Shining vibe here whereas a bunch of spooks in a giant residence are preying on the sanity of the living. But the plot thickens. It seems as though Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain) is in cahoots with her brother Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) when they trick poor Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) into marryning into their family. The question is why?
From what I gather, the siblings are bound to the house for some reason and must partake in such sinister plans to sacrifice youth for the sake of the house. Hiddleston’s character seems reluctant now that he’s found his one true love in Wasikowski, so it’s up to Chastain to carry on with business as usual. Whatever’s living in that basement doesn’t look to friendly, and it looks like it wants out as soon as possible.
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen this level of grand paranormal activity that isn’t about some sort of exorcism or haunting disturbance on a suburban family. Most of my interest is drawn toward the production design and detail to the old mansion. Guillermo del Toro has done a wonderful job in capturing such a spooky environment.
