KRAMPUS Brings Unhappy Holidays with its First Trailer

Yuletide cheer has come early this year with the first trailer for Krampus. Tackling the spirit of Halloween in his directorial debut, Trick ‘r Treat, Michael Dougherty’s long-awaited sophomore followup will arrive early December as a fun precursor to Christmas. Those who do not know the urban legend of the anti-Santa will soon remember his name if this trailer is any indication of the joy this film will bring this holiday season.

Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Jack Frost immediately come to mind when I think of Christmas horror movies. And it has been quite some time since we’ve had another stand out as a modern entry in the niche genre. From the witty banter across the dinner table between Adam Scott and David Koechner to the mysterious dark helpers, Krampus seems like it could become the next annual Christmas horror tradition.

Michael Dougherty did a wonderful job capturing the essence of Halloween in Trick ‘r Treat and I would figure he would approach Krampus with the same love and care for this new holiday horror. After he finishes Trick ‘r Treat 2, perhaps the next holiday he’ll take on is Easter or Valentine’s Day. I’m sure with his creativity Dougherty would be able to deliver.

Extended commentary:

  • I’m excited to see what kind of villainous toys Krampus will bring.
  • What’s Krampus’ deal? What’s his motivation to cause terror?
  • Will Santa come to the rescue of this family?

Here’s the official plot synopsis of Krampus, courtesy of Legendary Pictures:

When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.

All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, Krampus stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania LaVie Owen, and Emjay Anthony, The film is set to arrive in theaters this December 4.

The Coolest Comic-Con 2015 Booths, Exhibits, and Experiences

So here we are again. San Diego Comic-Con. The place that makes geek wet dreams come true. I definitely was excited to get my nerd on this weekend, and I’m always looking forward to seeing what new booths, exhibits, and experiences SDCC has to offer. Suffice it to say, I was a tad underwhelmed by most of what I saw inside and out of the San Diego Convention Center.

This is my fourth year attending Comic-Con. Every year I’m always expecting something different, looking to see new things, but as far as booths go, Comic-Con 2015 seemed a bit lackluster. Most of the major booths and exhibits such as Lionsgate, Warner Bros., DC Comics, Fox, Weta Workshop, Gentle Giant, Image Comics, Marvel, Nintendo, and X-Box among others were pretty much the same as the last few years. And even exhibitors like PlayStation were completely absent. Ubisoft and a few others cut back on the scale of their booths. Even Marvel downsized from a big video screen on their booth to just a giant scrawl to promote Ant-Man.

Last year, DC Comics gave a preview of the cape and cowl that Ben Affleck’s Batman will be wearing in Batman v Superman. This year they went one level up by showcasing the costumes of

However, there were some Comic-Con 2015 booths that did impress me. It wasn’t the movie studios who were going all out, but it was TV series who were making their mark on the show floor, and even outside. As per usual, The Walking Dead booth dominated the floor with a fun experience with multiple photo ops with the undead to tease the upcoming season – they also spoiled some major plot points from the last season. MTV’s Scream and History’s Vikings had fun booth experiences to get splattered by blood and walk away with some swag.

The most comprehensive Comic-Con 2015 booths weren’t inside however, they were outside the convention center. MTV’s Scream Queens had a carnival giant drop ride and FX hosted huge experiences such as an America Horror Story: Hotel recreation and a giant Fargo snow globe. Even Adult Swim had its own area for fans to play around in with a little carnival setting for folks to play games and win prizes.

Nerd HQ changed venues this year and instead of taking over PETCO Park they inhabited three levels of the New Children’s Museum. It was closer to the convention center and had more room for activities.

These are a few stray observations I noticed that I thought I would share. Many folks are not able to make it to Comic-Con and I hope this photo gallery will at least give you a solid taste of what it is like to walk around the epic convention.

Official ‘Crimson Peak’ Trailer Conjures Up Dark Spirits

Crimson Peak Official Trailer

I love horror movies because of there are so many twists and turns they may take in order to terrify and disturb their audience. There’s never a lack of imagination that can be found because filmmakers can always stretch the boundaries of the genre to present unique stories never seen before. Enter Guillermo del Toro (Cronos; Mimic; Blade II; Hellboy; Pan’s Labyrinth) whose upcoming feature, Crimson Peak, just obtained its first official trailer. There may be more to this ghost story than meets the eye. Watch the trailer after the break. Continue reading

Final ‘Jurassic World’ Trailer Showcases a Clever Girl [125 Screenshots]

With the summer moving in hot, Universal Pictures has unleashed one final Jurassic World trailer that leaves nothing to chance. The last trailer that debuted during the Super Bowl earlier this year gave us a further taste of the spectacle of what’s to come, whereas the first trailer focused more on the nostalgia of the franchise. What I’m seeing in the final Jurassic World trailer is conventional summer blockbuster advertising.

It isn’t enough to prey on those who adore this beloved franchise, the marketing team needs to ensure folks that there will be action, guns, death, and sexual innuendo to appease popcorn audiences. The end result leaves little to the imagination, revealing the new Indominous Rex terrorizing our puny human character who deliver as much exposition as possible in the short two and a half minutes to sell the film.

I’m still hopeful that there is more to Jurassic World than meets the eye, but I wish they hadn’t chosen to include this much eye candy in this trailer. I see Chris Pratt’s character taking on the task and ideology of both Ian Malcolm and Alan Grant. While Bryce Dallas Howard takes on more of the business side of John Hammond’s character, with boobs, who will learn the precious meaning of life and humanity.

There are still a few secrets to the story that haven’t been hinted at, such as who is Vincent D’Onofrio’s character and what is is involvement in all of this and what’s the relationship between the kids and the rest of the story? As long as everything fits organically within the movie I’ll leave happier than when I go in to see it.

Here’s the official production notes of Jurassic World courtesy of Universal Pictures:

Colin Trevorrow directs the epic action-adventure based on characters created by Michael Crichton. The screenplay is by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Trevorrow & Derek Connolly, and the story is by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley join the team as producers.

Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, and Omar Sy. The film is set to release in theaters on June 12, 2015.
