Movies on Blu-ray
Jupiter Ascending (Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski) Rated PG-13 [127 min] – In a bright and colorful future, a young destitute caretaker gets targeted by a ruthless son of a powerful family that live on a planet in need of a new heir, so she travels with a genetically engineered warrior to the planet in order to stop his tyrant reign. Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, James D’Arcy, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, and Sean Bean [Watch the trailer]
This movie is possibly the most terrible film you’ll experience all year. Down the road Jupiter Ascending might be one of those awful movies that becomes a cult classic based on its awfulness, like The Room. ScreenJunkies summed it up very well with their Honest Trailers series and actually summarize the entire movie to show you how bad it is. Watch that instead. SKIP THIS! Special features include:
- Dolby Atmos Audio (Blu-ray Only)
- Caine Wise: Interplanetary Warrior (Blu-ray Only)
- The Wachowskis: Minds Over Matter (Blu-ray Only)
- Worlds Within Worlds Within Worlds (Blu-ray Only)
- Bullet Time Evolved (Blu-ray Only)
- From Earth to Jupiter (And Everywhere In Between) (Blu-ray Only)
- Jupiter Ascending: Genetically Spliced
- Jupiter Jones: Destiny Is Within Us
Focus (Glenn Ficarra and John Requa) Rated R [104 min] – In the midst of veteran con man Nicky’s latest scheme, a woman from his past – now an accomplished femme fatale – shows up and throws his plans for a loop. Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Rodrigo Santoro, and Adrian Martinez
I wanted to like Focus, I really did. Will Smith shows that he still has great charisma and Margot Robbie is simply wonderful, per usual. However, the story is pretty grating and could have been broken up into two different films. The relationship between the two is weirdly mapped out and there is no real characters aside from Smith and Robbie. Focus has some fun moments, but the twists and turns it aims to impress you with don’t quite hit their marks. RENT IT! Special features include:
- Masters of Misdirection: The Players in a Con
- Will Smith: Gentleman Thief
- Margot Robbie: Stealing Hearts
- Deleted Scenes
- Alternate Opening
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (Paul Tibbitt) Rated PG [93 min] – SpongeBob goes on a quest to discover a stolen recipe that takes him to our dimension, our world, where he tangles with a pirate. Starring Tom Kenny, Antonio Banderas, Bill Fagerbakke, and Clancy Brown
Sadly I did not catch this gem in theaters. But if the child-ish physical humor and silly premise pique your interest, be my guest. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features include:
- On the Surface
- Underwater Awesomeness
- Bikini Bottom Boogie
- Deleted/Extended/Alternate/Test Scenes
McFarland, USA (Niki Caro) Rated PG [128 min] – A cross country coach in a small California town transforms a team of athletes into championship contenders. Starring Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Ramiro Rodriguez, and Carlos Pratts
I did not see this film, but McFarland, USA looks like your average, run of the mill inspiration story revolving around athleticism and hope. Not my cup of tea. They’re all the same. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features include:
- McFarland Reflections
- “Juntos” Music Video by Juanes
- Inspiring McFarland
- Deleted and Extended Scenes
Camp X-Ray (Peter Sattler) Rated R [117 min] – A soldier assigned to Guantanamo Bay befriends a man who has been imprisoned there for eight years. Starring Kristen Stewart, Peyman Moaadi, and Lane Garrison
Did not see this film either, but I heard it was decent. From what I know, Camp X-Ray is the beginning of Kristen Stewart’s renaissance. RENT IT! Special features include:
- Making Of

Television Releases
Parks and Recreation: The Complete Series (Greg Daniels and Michael Schur) [DVD ONLY] – The absurd antics of an Indiana town’s public officials as they pursue sundry projects to make their city a better place. Starring Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, and Adam Scott
If you haven’t seen Parks and Recreation, just buy it. The first season is slow, but the later six seasons are well worth the journey, and them some. The character chemistry alone is incredible and the comedy is so smart. BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY… or on sale during, presumably, Black Friday. Special features include:
- Episode Commentaries
- Pratt on Parks
- Li’l Sebastian Tribute
- The Swanson Zone
- Patton Sci-Fi Filibuster
- 100th Episode Feature
- Rashida and Rob Farewells
- Behind the Scenes of the Farewell Season
- The Story of Mouse Rat
- Music Videos
- Blooper Reels
- Webisodes
- Deleted Scenes
- And more!
Pretty Little Liars: The Complete Fifth Season (I. Marlene King) [DVD ONLY] Rated TV-14 [42 min] – Four friends band together against an anonymous foe who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, while unraveling the mystery of the murder of their best friend. Starring Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Sasha Pieterse
OK, so I haven’t seen this season yet, but I have seen the first four seasons. There’s not much difference other than what the main issue the girls are dealing with each season. From what I’ve heard, the twist in this season made or broke fans. For a young adult soap opera it’s not terrible, but the themes and the plot can really drag at 22-ish, hour long episodes per season. WATCH IT ON NETFLIX! (Unless you’re a die hard PLL Army member). Special features include:
- Good Girls, Bad Lies: The Stronger PLLs
- Pretty Little Liars: The Guys Are Back!
- Celebrating a Pretty 100th
- Christmas in Rosewood: Designing the Ice Ball
- We Love You to DeAth – Fan Appreciation Episode
- Deleted Scenes
Rizzoli & Isles: The Complete Fifth Season (Janet Tamaro) [DVD ONLY] [45 min] – Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles team up to solve crimes in Boston. Starring Angie Harmon, Sasha Alexander, and Jordan Bridges
I’ve only checked out this season, just for y’all, but from what I’ve learned is that I still hate procedural crime shows. It’s better than the CSIs or Law and Orders or other forensic shows there are out there because Harmon and Alexander have strong chemistry together. But there is so much more better television out there than this. CATCH RERUNS ON TNT! Special features include:
- Stepping Through the Stunt: The Burden of Proof Bridge Sequence featurette
- Gag Reel
- Deleted scenes
Tom and Jerry: The Gene Deitch Collection [DVD ONLY] – Originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom and Jerry centers on the never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom’s attempts to capture Jerry. Jerry however, is clever and quick on his feet so Tom hardly ever manages to catch him. In the 1960s, acclaimed animation director Gene Deitch was selected to bring a new set of Tom and Jerry shorts to life. Adding his own distinctive style to the famous cartoon. Deitch worked with William L. Snyder’s Prague-based animation studio, Rembrandt Films to create 13 memorable shorts, including Switchin’ Kitten, Down and Outing, It’s Greek to Me-ow!, High Steaks, Mouse Into Space, Landing Stripling, Calypso Cat, Dicky Moe, The Tom & Jerry Cartoon Kit, Tall in the Trap, Sorry Safari, Buddies Thicker Than Water, and Carmen Get It!
Like the Looney Tunes Musical Masterpieces collection that released recently, this is a classic animated series that all children need to watch growing up. The rivalry between Tom and Jerry is so iconic and fun that all ages can still enjoy it too. Special features include:
- Tom and Jerry…and Gene: The Rembrandt Years
- Much Ado About Tom and Jerry
