Lightning Strikes Against Retirement in Latest CARS 3 Trailer

How does one leave a legacy asks the latest trailer for Cars 3. Facing a new racer that threatens Lightning McQueen’s place in the spotlight, our hero must relearn from the wheels up how to be the best. Faster, sleeker, and more technologically advanced, how will McQueen recapture his glory?

Expanding on the Rocky III vibe the previous trailer for Cars 3 left, there’s no denying the parallels grow even stronger with Lightning McQueen merchandising, the champ falling from the forefront of his sport, and especially a few racing scenes on a beach. All that’s left is for Jackson Storm to grow a mohawk.

There has been little revealed about who Jackson Storm is or the rest of these new characters from any of the trailers, and it seems the sole focus is placed on Lightning’s angst and return to form.

While the original Cars 3 teaser trailer put on display a more grittier, refined look, this third trailer brings fans back to the more cutesy look they know and love. The animation is definitely more polished having been six years since Cars 2, and it should make for more detailed and colorful races to come.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Cars 3, courtesy of Pixar

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Directed by Brian Fee, Cars 3 stars Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Nathan Fillion, and Kerry Washington. The film is set to release on June 16, 2017.
