Jason Segal and Muppets Join Forces

Another long-standing series of sorts got a big push today as The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made! was also unveiled through a song and dance number by a whole slew of Muppets on stage. The film is indeed being written by Jason Segel (as we first found out about over a year ago) and it seems like the idea for this flick comes from another that was in development by Jim Henson himself back in 1985.  The idea had Gonzo directing a Hollywood movie and very quickly running out of money to make it, and it seems this same story will be at the heart of Segel’s Muppet movie. Though some of the more recent Muppet fare has been lackluster (Muppets from Space anybody?) I love these fuzzy puppets, and with Jason Segel writing, I don’t think this can go wrong.

Box Office Battlefield: 9, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Sorority Row, and Whiteout

Once again, a weekend has come upon us. With a new weekend comes new movies. Here are you movies for the weekend of September 11, 2009 and my opinion whether they are worth your time viewing:

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides?

zz3bdf00aa-550x219

According to /Film, at the D23 Expo, it was released that the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is currently subtitled, On Stranger Tides. What does this mean? The new movie is up for shooting around the April 2010 time frame. This would be the start of a whole new trilogy and luckily without Orlando Bloom. These won’t be shot back to back like the original trilogy, so maybe we’ll get a decent Pirates movie……

Can They Make It Work? Akira The Life Action Film…

akiramovie

Well apparently, according to Collider, there have been news on new screenwriters for the Akira live action movie. Warner Bros. Pictures is still going along with the development of this film and hired screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. The duo co-wrote the first Iron Man movie and Children of Men.

Akira is based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume graphic novel masterwork. The film is said to take place in “New Manhattan,” a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. The famous motorcycle will also definitely be a part of the film. This is one of the most praised anime of all time, so we’ll see what they can do with this. Can the original be justified in live action form?

Afterlife & Begins…A Resident Evil Story

Resident Evil

Well, it had to be done sooner or later. After the fourth 3-D installment of Resident Evil, Afterlife, it is confirmed by Bloody Disgusting that Sony Screen Gems will continue with the franchise with a complete reboot currently titled Resident Evil: Begins. With only less than a decade since the first RE film arose, will this reboot satisfy the hunger of zombie fans? Maybe this could be a good thing. Begins will take place basically right where the first film came in with a psycho computer killing scientists with a military unit going in to solve this little dilemma. I’m not saying the current RE films have been bad, although the first two were a lot better than the third. This reboot could be a lot better and revamp the franchise to more of the story from the videogames. We’ll have to see how this pans out. I wouldn’t mind some Jill Valentine story.

Outlander…We Have Your Remake!

malachi

This Chidlren of the Corn remake might just have no hope. With Ehren Kruger at the helm, one of the writers responsible for the monstrosity that was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, we might see one of the first disappointing horror remakes to date. I myself feel a lot of remakes for horror have actually been pretty good, but I don’t know how I feel about Kruger. According to Variety, this opportunity was swept up by the Weinstein group and needed to be done.

“We felt the [original] film was a missed opportunity,” said Bob Weinstein. “If you read the short story, it’s got such a strong feeling to it and there’s this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It’s popular in Hollywood to say you [are] re-envisioning a project, but a lot of the time they’re just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story.”

My final verdict, Kruger can’t do horror right (The Brothers Grimm, The Skeleton Key, The Ring 1 & 2, and Scream 3), especially with trying to reproduce a classic that could be a great story. This is a story of gingers, and this won’t be scary? How could a story about ginger kids not be scary? Damn you Kruger!

You’ve Just Been Judged

judge dredd 320x240

A Judge Dredd remake is in the works. Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine. Garland is currently in the process of writing a fresh new look on the Judges of the future.

With Judge Dredd under the umbrella of Danny Boyle’s DNA Films, it’s no surprise that the writer most often associated with Boyle, Alex Garland, is spearheading this project. Mark Simpson, who’s worked on the art for Judge Dredd comic strips as well as the concept art for this new adaptation said this of the art and Garland: “Working through script visuals for Judge Dredd movie. Alex Garland writes a great script.” That shouldn’t be any surprise, it sure isn’t to me. Garland certainly has what it takes to bring a thoughtful, yet tonally accurate Judge Dredd satire to theaters. His past genre screenplays should be proof enough of that. – First Showing

Now someone needs to remake Demolition Man…………

Supermax: The Green Arrow Story?

supermax_prison-in-united-states

Apparently, Sony has bought the script of Supermax, an original story based on the superhero, The Green Arrow.

Bloody Disgusting states: Supermax takes place in a Maximum Security Prison for the Super-Natural as a skilled guard must join forces with a lethal inmate after a riot ensues in order to fight his way through various monsters and mad-men in order to survive.

This story sounds like a really cool concept if they can get the cast right, set the tone from the very beginning and get a solid story. Now this story, actually, sounds like the Green Arrow story will be on hold and this Supermax film will be its own story. Whatever the case is, I want a good movie out of this story. I am intrigued and production should be starting early 2010. Let’s pray this doesn’t go to waste.
