American Ultra (Nima Nourizadeh) Rated R [95 min] – A stoner – who is in fact a government agent – is marked as a liability and targeted for extermination. But he’s too well-trained and too high for them to handle. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Connie Britton, Topher Grace and John Leguizamo

There’s a lot to like about the concept behind American Ultra, but the execution of the film is pretty lackluster. It’s ugly with very little behind it, and surprisingly Kristen Stewart isn’t to blame. Her and Jesse Eisenberg are actually very good and they have great chemistry together, it’s just a weak, lukewarm narrative that could have used a little more heat before serving up to audiences. The special features are fine, nothing extraordinarily insightful.

Turkey Hollow (Kirk R .Thatcher) Rated TV-PG [90 min] [DVD Only] – A recently divorced dad and his two kids as they travel to celebrate Thanksgiving with their eccentric Aunt Cly in the rustic town of Turkey Hollow. Exploring the mysterious surrounding woods leads the kids to discover the secret of the legendary Howling Hoodoo. When a scheming neighbor threatens to take Aunt Cly’s farm, the family enlists surprising new friends to help save the farm – and Thanksgiving! Starring Mary Steenburgen, Jay Harrington, and Chris Bridges

This I can’t say I’ve ever taken the time to watch a Lifetime movie in its entirety, but Turkey Hollow is exceptionally bonkers. The acting is egregious to no end with Mary Steenbergen chewing up scenery like she hasn’t had a Thanksgiving meal in ages and Ludicrous making a random appearance as the narrator for the paycheck. The only redeeming factor that Turkey Hollow has is its practical effects and puppetry thanks to Jim Henson, who helped conceived the story too. It’s the kind of movie that’s so bad it’s fun to laugh at.

(Guy Ritchie) Rated PG-13 [116 min] – In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons. Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, and Elizabeth Debicki

In its attempt to bring back the sexy spy genre, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. succeeds to some degree thanks to Guy Ritchie’s filmmaking style. The cast is beautiful and the locations are extravagant, but the characterization and the plot are lukewarm. The Blu-ray is host to a decent amount of special features that if you liked this movie you’d be enamored not to fall in love with the behind the scenes process.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies [Extended Edition] (Peter Jackson) Rated PG-13 [144 min] – The Company of Thorin has reached Smaug’s lair; but can Bilbo and the Dwarves reclaim Erebor and the treasure? And, if so, can they hold on to it? Starring Martin Freeman, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, and Evangeline Lilly

I’m sure most who love everything Middleearth know by now to wait for the Extended Editions. They never lack in awesome special features and the additional scenes always prove to add more value in the story. However, including additional scenes to the already bloated Hobbit franchise enacts the opposite effect. The additional scenes bring hardly anything we couldn’t have already gained through the story itself and makes the experience even worse since the film itself is quite terrible. My glimmer of hope that the extra scenes may improve the story, but sadly they did not. If you do want this film, the special features are abundantly thorough and give good insights into the chaos of The Battle of the Five Armies.

Experience the majestic works of one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animated cinema. Hayao Miyazaki weaves his unique style of artistry and epic adventure into astonishing tales of triumph, bursting with imagination and wonder.

Unfortunately I was not able to get my paws on this to review, but I think it’s still worth mentioning if you are a fan of Studio Ghibli like me. I think the price point, $215 on sale, is wildly too high compared to many box sets I’ve seen. Not including the collectible booklet or the packaging, if you’re putting a value on the set based on the movies alone they’re almost $20 per movie, which is what each Ghibli film typically sells for on sale. I’d wait until it price drops down to a more reasonable level.

Trainwreck (Judd Apatow) Rated R [125 min] – Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy. Starring Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Lebron James, Tilda Swinton, and Colin Quinn

If you haven’t seen any sketches from Inside Amy Schumer then Trainwreck might be a breath of fresh air. The film is adorable, sweet, and hilarious. The plot, though, feels a bit derivative. Trainwreck is at a level above most romantic comedies, however the final third falls into familiar tropes. It’s a great watch, don’t get me wrong, it might not be the revolutionary romcom you were hoping for.

The special features are fun. With a cast and team like this, the extras on this disc make for a really rousing time. Trainwreck is Amy Schumer’s first feature film, that she also wrote, so it’s nice to see her take on the whole filmmaking process.

Believe the hype: Terminator: Genisys is pretty bad. It’s not as terrible as Salvation or Rise of the Machines, but Genisys is pretty much useless to the franchise. It’s as if Genisys tried as hard as it could to basterdize the franchise with it’s overly convoluted plot. If you have kids and want to introduce them to The Terminator franchise, raise them knowing only the first two were made. The special features are nothing special; the most interesting tidbit is how they determined Emilia Clarke could be Sarah Connor. Covering special effects is probably one of the most wasted special features these days; computers can make things look fairly believable, we get it.

Mr. Holmes (Bill Condon) Rated PG [104 min] – An aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looks back on his life, and grapples with an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman. Starring Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Hattie Morahan

As depressing as it is to see the beloved inspector from Baker Street aged up to the point of senility, I like the idea of Mr. Holmes. It’s a very well to do movie that has all the best intentions with a performance by Ian McKellen that serves the character very well. The energy of Mr. Holmes, however, is sparse as it jumps back and forth in time recollecting a case long forgotten. I wasn’t expecting it to be as thrilling as the BBC’s Sherlock, but it didn’t have to be so drab.

I’m sure many Breaking Bad fans were torn by this series. I, myself, really enjoyed Better Call Saul. It’s absolutely fascinating to see how Jimmy evolves into Saul Goodman and the path he takes and the characters he meets. I hadn’t gotten my hands on a review copy, but based on all the incredible extras BB had, I expect nothing less from BCS.

One of the most emotionally fueled movies of the year, literally, Inside Out proves Pixar still has a lot of amazing original story ideas left in their brain trust. It’s a fantastic exploration of the mind through colorful characters and impeccably crafted visuals. All of the special features on this disc consist of a ton of juicy tidbits that make the experience even more inspiring. A new short furthering the story of the characters, “Riley’s First Date,” is really cute and proves that these two features actually warrant the necessity of a sequel. The deleted scenes puts into light the importance of editing and storytelling because Inside Out would have been a completely different movie with the way they originally conceived Joy. Inside Out is by far one of the best uses of your time this year.

Toy Story That Time Forgot (Steve Purcell) Rated TV-G [22 min] – It’s a post Christmas play date and the toys have to go up against the fearsome and aggressive new dino toys. Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Kristen Schaal, Kevin McKidd, Emily Hahn, and Wallace Shawn

This has to be one of the best short films Pixar has made so far in the Toy Story universe. It has a lot of heart, the new toys are hilarious, and the little world created for this short is well thought out. In these seasonal, longer shorts, Pixar is putting more emphasis on secondary characters. In Toy Story of Terror it’s Jesse, and here in Toy Story That Time Forgot it’s Trixie. These bite-sized shorts bring a lot of joy to my face and I hope they continue making them.

Vacation (John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein) Rated R [99 min] – Rusty Griswold takes his own family on a road trip to “Walley World” in order to spice things up with his wife and reconnect with his sons. Starring Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Skyler Gisondo, and Steele Stebbins

Vacation adds fuel to the fire in that it proves we need to stop creating comedy sequels years past their predecessors. Happy Gilmore is a wonderfully entertaining movie, and the idea of developing a sequel is groan worthy; exactly how I felt every minute watching Vacation. The jokes are terribly eye-roll inducing and the characters are all moronically hardly resonating. The best thing Vacation has to offer are the various cameos.

The End of the Tour (James Ponsoldt) [Limited] Rated R [106 min] – The story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace, which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking epic novel, ‘Infinite Jest.’ Starring Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Anna Chlumsky, and Mamie Gummer

I’ve never read any of David Foster Wallace’s works, but after watching The End of the Tour a foundation of interest has been built. The dynamic between Eisenberg and Segel is absolutely incredible to watch because the their interactions on screen feel wholeheartedly organic. I was hanging on every word the two exchanged as if I was watching magic happen before my eyes or a debate I actually cared about. In this characterization of Wallace himself, as portrayed by Segel, the author comes across as a very layered and complex individual and I’m now intrigued at how his persona would be carried into his writing.

Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas (Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh) Rated TV-G [43 min] – An elf leaves the North Pole to find his dad, who is on the naughty list. Starring Mark Hamill, Jim Parsons, Kate Micucci, and Ed Asner

I’m not entirely sure who thought remaking Jon Favreau’s Elf into a stop-motion animated film with Buddy, but it was completely unnecessary. The live-action Will Ferrell movie is already enough of a children’s movie to be fun for all ages, and choosing Jim Parsons (CBS’s The Big Bang Theory) as the voice for Buddy, in a musical nonetheless, was a poor choice too. Buddy’s already kind of annoying with his child-like humor and by giving him the voice of Jim Parsons makes him unbearable, especially when he sings.

The original Batman series starring Adam West is all about fun detective high jinks. There isn’t any overarching plot threads, it’s not very serialized, and all of the characters maintain their surface level comic roots. The third season boasts some pretty good episodes if you’re a collector.

Pixels (Chris Columbus) Rated PG-13 [105 min] – When aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth in the form of the video games. Starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, and Brian Cox

This movie is a load of garbage that houses great potential and squanders it to present little entertainment value. Pixels is far better than a lot of the flops Adam Sandler has dished out recently, but that’s like saying one episode of The Walking Dead is more upbeat and chipper than the others. The characters are horrendous to root for and the women are given nothing to do and written terribly. This movie was DOA as soon as they announced Adam Sandler’s name.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Oona Laurence, Forest Whitaker, Naomi Harris, and 50 Cent

If you’ve seen one boxing movie you’ve seen Southpaw. Jake Gyllenhaal is a physical powerhouse and a big presence on screen, but there’s hardly any depth to him or his characters to really care or set him apart from any other boxing story we’ve seen before. There’s also very little energy, which is surprisingly with how electrifying and tense boxing can be.

The Gift (Joel Edgerton) Rated R [108 min] – A young married couple’s lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband’s past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years. Starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton, and Allison Tolman

One of the more surprising films of the year, The Gift delivers many twists and turns that lead up to a very rewarding climax. There haven’t been too many revelatory films quite like The Gift that really shake things up right to the very end and make you think about the actions and the consequences of the characters. Joel Edgerton did a fantastic job as a first time director, while also performing quite well.

Max (Boaz Yakin) Rated PG [111 min] – A dog that helped US Marines in Afghanistan returns to the U.S. and is adopted by his handler’s family after suffering a traumatic experience. Starring Thomas Haden Church, Josh Wiggins, Luke Kleintank, and Lauren Graham

There seems to be two different movies here: a family-friendly romp about coping with loss and a dark, underground story about cartels and weapons. Max has weird tonal shifts that can’t find an acceptable middle to find enjoyable. It leans far on one side or the other. The film has all the best intentions but because of its mishandled direction it isn’t quite the compelling film it seeks out to be.

But the fact that I don’t own an Xbox One kind of prohibits my ability to try this game out.
