Laika’s KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS Teaser Trailer Showcases Their Best Work Yet in 90 Seconds

Known for such films as Coraline, ParaNorman, and last year’s The Boxtrolls, the stop-motion animation studio, LAIKA, returns in 2016 to bring audiences Kubo and the Two Strings. The first, stunning teaser is wildly different from anything we’ve seen from the Oscar nominated animators before. Taking a more Eastern approach to their art direction, influenced by Japanese culture, this could be LAIKA’s boldest film to date.

Upon watching the first seconds of this teaser I was blown away. According to the official production announcement from 2014, Kubo and the Two Strings “is being brought to life at LAIKA via the company’s innovative 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid technique.” The opening sequence in the ocean is breathtakingly impressive and the environments are stunning. The way the movie positions itself with its art style, action, and visual queues, it almost feels like a video game.

Kubo and the Two Strings hosts a bevy of big name actors to voice its characters. Game of ThronesArt Parkinson, who plays Rickon Stark, voices the titular Kubo. At his side are George Takei as Hosato, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Hashi, Brenda Vaccaro as Kamekichi, Rooney Mara as the evil twin Sisters, Charlize Theron as Monkey, Matthew McConaughey as Beetle, and Ralph Fiennes as the Moon King.

I like Coraline, but ParaNorman didn’t impress me beyond its ending and The Boxtrolls didn’t work for me at all. The mix of Japanese culture and stop-motion animation is something I can’t say I’ve seen before, and it truly interests me. I can safely say Kubo and the Two Strings is high up on my list of most anticipated films of 2016.

Extended Commentary:

  • From the origami birds to the underwater eyeball creatures, I’m amazed by everything.
  • The music perfectly sets up the tone of this film.
  • Making photo realistic water in film and video games is wonderful, but the ocean animation here looks beautiful.
  • Some of the animation reminds me of James and the Giant Peach.
  • Before reading the plot synopsis, I had thought Kubo was a girl. I think it would be more interesting story if Kubo was a girl and not a boy.
  • It would also be awesome if LAIKA intended this film to be voiced over in Japanese first then dubbed in English.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Kubo and the Two Strings, courtesy of Focus Features:

Kubo and the Two Strings is an epic action-adventure set in a fantastical Japan from acclaimed animation studio LAIKA. Clever, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato, Hashi and Kamekichi. But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey and Beetle, and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King and the evil twin Sisters to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.

Directed by Travis Knight, Kubo and the Two Strings is set for release on August 19, 2016.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Teaser Introduces Many New Mutants [75 Screenshots]

The final chapter of the X-Men: First Class saga is coming to a close with the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse. As it has been foretold by writer/producer Simon Kinberg, this will supposedly be the last time we may see the recent portrayals of Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Professor X (James McAvoy) in action. But fear not, because this teaser is packed full of classic mutants that could potentially take over the franchise.

It may be hard to believe a mutant world without Charles Xavier, but the X-Men franchise has survived without the professor before – in the comics and the ’90s animated series. With how unstable the franchise had become after X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, First Class and Days of Future Past have done an incredible job bringing the franchise back into the forefront of superhero films.

X-Men: Apocalypse hosts a slew of new faces playing familiar characters, including Scott Summers aka Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Ororo Munro aka Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Warren Worthington III aka Angel (Ben Hardy), and Kurt Wagner aka Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee); all of whom could take on the mantle of the next group of mutants to hold down the franchise. There are also two new additions Marvel fans will be pleased to see join the X-Men Cinematic Universe such as Jubilation Lee aka Jubilee (Lana Condor) and Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock aka Psylocke (Olivia Munn). Evan Peters will also be returning as Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver.

As for the trailer itself, Apocalypse has always been one of the greatest threats to the X-Men and I am mostly excited by everything I have seen here. I’m curious to see how his world domination plans will affect our graduating First Class heroes and how their chapter will come to a close. Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina; Star Wars: The Force Awakens; Inside Llewyn Davis) is one of the best, working actors right now, but something has me worried about his role as Apocalypse. The makeup and outfit looks goofy as hell and super villain portrayals in film have never been that well regarded. I am keeping an open mind and I trust Bryan Singer with his direction.

Extended commentary:

  • I’m concerned Sophie Turner’s American accent will be awkward since we know her best from Game of Thrones.
  • Tye Sheridan looks like the perfect Scott Summers.
  • Speaking of which, I wonder how they’ll address his relationship to his brother, Alex Summers aka Havok (Lucas Till).
  • The new X-Men uniforms look pretty neat. It’s kind of funny how they’re more of an upgrade and sleeker than Singer’s first X-Men movie.
  • Magneto looks like a wandering lumberjack. So angsty.
  • Nightcrawler looks far better than his first look reveal in Entertainment Weekly.
  • It will be interesting to see how they bring Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) back after Xavier wiped her mind.
  • What are the odds that Wolverine appears?

Here’s the motion poster that was released yesterday to tease the trailer:

Here’s the official plot synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse, courtesy of 20th Century Fox:

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse. The film is set to release on May 27, 2016.

73rd Golden Globes Nominations Favor CAROL

Following the unpredictable 22nd Annual SAG Awards nominees yesterday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has now revealed their nominees for the Golden Globes. HFPA president Lorenzo Soria was joined by actors America Ferrera, Angela Bassett, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Dennis Quaid this morning to announce the 73rd Golden Globes nominations for both film and television categories. The Golden Globes will be presented live on NBC with host Ricky Gervais on January 10, 2016.

Unlike the SAG Awards where Trumbo gained the most nods, the HFPA favored Carol, a top contender among the chatter I’ve been in tune with. Carol has earned itself five nods, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actress for Cate Blanchett, Best Actress for Rooney Mara, Best Director for Todd Haynes, and Best Score. The Revenant, Steve Jobs, and The Big Short lead behind Carol with four nods each. The Danish Girl, The Hateful Eight, The Martian, Room, and Spotlight each have three.

Regardless, this year’s Golden Globes nominees seem to be more in line with what has been predicted. There are typically a few oddball choices every year with the Golden Globes – The Tourist for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical, anyone? – but I honestly don’t see any I would strongly disagree with. The Martian, The Big Short, and Joy aren’t really comedies or musicals, but they do have some great humor in them.

What really stands out to me, and what fills me with hope for this awards season, is that Mad Max: Fury Road has earned two nods, including Best Picture – Drama and Best Director for George Miller. These nominations alone are a win in my mind and also well deserved – read my review of Mad Max: Fury Road. Also sticking out to me is the fact that Alicia Vikander, who came out of nowhere this year and starred in five big movies, is nominated in two separate categories: Best Actress in a Drama for The Danish Girl and Best Supporting Actress for Ex Machina. Everyone is saying Brie Larson is the new “It’ girl while Vikander seems to be skating by undetected. This woman is an incredible actress and deserves every bit of attention she is earning for her roles.

As far as television categories go, Netflix is the top dog among networks and streaming platforms with eight nominations – the exact same outcome as yesterday’s SAG Awards nominees announcement. American Crime, Fargo, Mr. Robot, Outlander, Transparent, and Wolf Hall all tied with three nominations each. Like Alicia Vikander, Lily Tomlin also scored two nominations herself, but in two separate mediums: one for Best Actress – Musical/Comedy for Grandma and Best Actress – Comedy for Grace and Frankie.

What scares me the most about this year’s Golden Globe Awards is the fact that I agree with a lot of their choices. Even more so in the television comedy categories. Specifically because The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family were not recognized as Best Series – Comedy and Jim Parsons was not nominated for Best Actor. It’s a Christmas miracle!

Without further ado, here are your nominees:

Netflix Streaming Report: A Very Murray Christmas

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for December 10, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with A Very Murray Christmas, Phoenix, Vampire Academy, and more.

A Very Murray Christmas Netflix

A Very Murray Christmas (Sofia Coppola) Rated TV-MA [56 min] – Bill Murray worries no one will show up to his T.V. show due to a terrible snow-storm in New York City. Starring Bill Murray, Paul Shaffer, Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman, Maya Rudolph, Jenny Lewis, David Johansen, George Clooney, Miley Cyrus, Michael Cera, and Chris Rock

Bill Murray, Christmas jingles, and a slew of celebrity appearances. What more could you ask for in a brisk, one-hour holiday special? It’s not going to replace A Charlie Brown Christmas, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, or It’s a Wonderful Life, but it is a fun little celebration that would be nice to have on as background noise with all the great musical numbers.

Phoenix 2014 Foreign Movie

Phoenix (Christian Petzold) Rated PG-13 [98 min] – A disfigured concentration-camp survivor, unrecognizable after facial reconstruction surgery, searches ravaged postwar Berlin for the husband who might have betrayed her to the Nazis. Starring Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, and Nina Kunzendorf

I haven’t had a second to sit back and enjoy what is being named as one of the year’s best releases. The subject matter may be difficult for some to stomach, but from what I’ve heard from others, Phoenix is a really good watch

Vampire Academy zoey deutch

Source: BuzzFeed

Vampire Academy (Mark Waters) Rated PG-13 [104 min] – Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story. Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, and Gabriel Byrne

True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, The Twilight Saga, and Underworld, you would think someone would catch on that we’ve had a bit of an overload on the whole niche as of late, right? Vampire Academy in no way helps bring vampires back into the forefront of pop culture, it reinforces the fact that someone needs to drive a stake into the genre to put it to rest. Without the enthusiasm of the young cast Vampire Academy would have been insufferable. [Read my full review]

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS Embraces its Radical Roots in First Trailer [97 Screenshots]

If there is one thing I could have done without in my life it would be the continuation of the Michael Bay produced TMNT reboot. I would have been completely happy. That was until I saw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows teaser trailer. While 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot had a grittier edge that lacked any kind of resemblance to the franchise, the Out of the Shadows teaser has the exact opposite feel to it.

TMNT is suppose to be the tubular adventures of four turtle brothers and their parental rat sensei who battle bizarre creature villains while navigating adolescence. Although the writers are the same, perhaps we can give thanks to the new director Dave Green (Earth to Echo). The Out of the Shadows teaser is spastic and drops very few hints about the plot, but it delivers more of that beloved TMNT personality in just 140 seconds than what the entire run time of the reboot did.

Here we find the Shredder (now played by Brian Tee) acting his revenge on the turtles by recruiting two thugs Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly aka Sheamus from WWE) that become mutants of their own thanks to Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), who fans know will become a mutant himself later on. Per usual, Channel 4 news reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) finds herself in trouble and a new hero hockey stick wielding hero, Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), arrives on the scene to save day.

There’s also flashes of alien spaceships coming from out of the sky near the end of the teaser. It has been rumored that Out of the Shadows could delve into Dimension X territory, which is the homeworld to Krang, the little anthropomorphic brain that sits inside the stomach of a mech suit he built while residing in the fearsome Technodrome – I can’t make this stuff up if I tried.

Now all of this may sound completely bonkers and stuffed to the brim like Spider-Man 3, but for some reason I find this to be a welcome change compared to that pile of garbage reboot – the only notable scene in the movie is the elevator beatbox session.

I grew up watching the Saturday morning Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon in the ’90s, owning all of the licensed toys, bed sheets, and more. The first two films were also wildly enjoyable to me as a young lad – less so as an adult, but the nostalgia remains. And of course, Turtles in Time is arguably one of the best arcade side-scrollers ever created. All of this wackiness in the teaser gives me hope that the franchise can rise up from the ashes in which director Jonathan Liebesman helped lay the foundation for.

Extended commentary:

  • Bebop and Rocksteady look a little rough, but I’m sure the effects will be touched up before the film’s release.
  • There seems to be some kind of macguffin the turtles are protecting before they begin their fight against Bebop and Rocksteady.
  • Stephen Amell looks kind of out of place since the character Casey Jones most notably has long brown hair. Running away on rollerblades doesn’t help his case either.
  • Those alien spaceships look like rejected Transformers since Paramount distributes that property too.
  • I think Will Arnett is hilarious, but I am not a fan of his character in these movies.
  • Where is Whoopi??

Here are the two teaser posters featuring Bebop and Rocksteady that were released earlier today by their respective actors on their Twitter accounts (click on either one to enlarge):

Directed by Dave Green, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows stars Megan Fox, Stephen Amell, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Brian Tee, Tyler Perry, Brittany Ishibashi, Laura Linney, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Johnny Knoxville, Pete Ploszek, Tony Shalhoub, Danny Woodburn, Gary Anthony Williams, and Stephen Farrelly. This film is set to arrive in theaters on June 3, 2016.

Netflix Leads 22nd Annual SAG Awards Nominees

The 22nd Annual SAG Awards nominees were revealed this morning at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood. Anna Faris (CBS’s Mom; Scary Movie) and Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain; Captain America: The Winter Soldier) were joined by SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Gabrielle Carteris to announce this year’s nominations, which will be awarded Live on TNT, TBS, truTV, sagawards.tntdrama.com, and truTV.com on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. (ET) / 5:00 p.m. (PT).

Actors make up a fairly large chunk of Academy voters, so it’s no surprise that the SAG Awards are a fairly good indicator as to how the Oscars may shape up. I didn’t think my eyebrows could be raised any higher when I saw the list of nominees this morning. Peculiar is one word to put it. Maybe even jarring. If this is how the awards season is going to be, I don’t know if I want any part of it.

First of all, Trumbo leads the film categories with three nods – ensemble, Bryan Cranston for Best Male Actor, and Helen Mirren for Best Supporting Female Actor. The other nominees are spread thin, with two nods each, including Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs. Second, there were a handful of names that have completely come out of left field, including Sarah Silverman (I Smile Back) and Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold) for Best Actress; and Christian Bale (The Big Short) for Best Supporting Actor. And third, I’m surprised Beasts of No Nation and bested the likes of The Martian and The Hateful Eight for Best Ensemble.

There were also a good handful of snubs that include Jennifer Lawrence for Joy, anyone from Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Matt Damon for The Martian, and Will Smith for Concussion. Of course they all can’t be chosen, and today’s nominees have certainly made the playing field rather interesting.

As for the television categories, they’ve all wound up pretty much how you would expect. The only kicker here is that Netflix leads the pack with eight nominations, which also has two in film categories as well. Game of Thrones, Homeland, and House of Cards are all tied at the top with three nods each. My biggest concern about the TV categories is that the industry continues to recognize Jim Parsons and The Big Bang Theory. It needs to stop.

Despite this year’s SAG Awards nominees not turning out exactly how some may have predicted, many fresh faces were recognized, which is always a good thing. Brie Larson, Rami Malek, Rooney Mara, Christina Ricci, Mark Rylance, Sarah Silverman, Jacob Tremblay, and Alicia Vikander have each earned their first individual Actor nomination with this upcoming SAG Awards.

Everything seems to be quite up in the air after the SAG Awards have shown that it could be anyone’s game. We will be keeping a close eye on the road to the Oscars with the Golden Globes nominations being announced tomorrow. Until then, your nominees are:

Every Tuesday we run down new movie and television releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can help save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Ant-Man, Minions, Under the Dome, Knock Knock, The X-Files, and more.

Ant-Man Shrinking

Movies on Blu-ray

Ant-Man (Peyton Reed) Rated PG-13 [117 min] – Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, and Michael Peña [Watch the trailer]

Ant-Man should have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox sooner. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of the weighty sequels where the Earth always seems to be in danger for some reason. And the fact that Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, two of the founding members of the Avengers in the comics, didn’t get their moment to shine until now is unfortunate. Despite all the ugly behind the scenes debacles and the prolonged production history, Ant-Man turned out to be a very fun entry into the MCU that proves it can hang with the big boys.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary with Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd
  • Making Of An Ant-Sized Heist: Set your watch and count down the action in this behind-the-scenes look at how to pull off a heist movie, including Scott Lang’s heist “family,” Ant-Man’s costume, plus amazing stunts and effects.
  • Let’s Go To The Macroverse: Shrink down to size in this fascinating look at creating the world from Ant-Man’s perspective, from macro photography through the subatomic.
  • WHIH NewsFront: A collection of content, including a glimpse at the future of Pym Technologies with Darren Cross, anchor Christine Everhart’s interview with soon-to-be-released prisoner Scott Lang on his notorious VistaCorp heist, and more.
  • Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

Knock Knock (Eli Roth) Rated R [99 min] – When a devoted husband and father is left home alone for the weekend, two stranded young women unexpectedly knock on his door for help. What starts out as a kind gesture results in a dangerous seduction and a deadly game of cat and mouse. Starring Keanu Reeves, Lorenza Izzo, and Ana de Armas [Watch the Trailer]

A remake of the 1977 thriller, Death Game, Eli Roth’s Knock Knock doesn’t quite have the oomph I was expecting or hoping for. Premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival it sounded like there was some decent buzz for the film, so I was intrigued. Having the chance to see it now, I have to say I’m not very impressed. It’s beautifully shot in the closed quarters of the ritzy LA home, but the plot is rather thin and the characters are very weak. The cast come off cartoonish, playing to their characters extremes, which skews the dark tone of the film. Knock Knock wants to be this disturbing thriller with a hard message and yet it borders on parody because it doesn’t take itself that seriously. Not even the audio commentary helps put perspective on where Roth was going with it.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary by Eli Roth, Lorenza Izo, Nicolás López and Colleen Camp
  • Deleted Scenes with Optional Audio Commentary by Eli Roth
  • “The Art of Destruction: The Making of Knock Knock” Featurette
  • Still Gallery

The Transporter Refueled (Camille Delamarre) Rated PG-13 [96 min] – In the south of France, former special-ops mercenary Frank Martin enters into a game of chess with a femme-fatale and her three sidekicks who are looking for revenge against a sinister Russian kingpin. Starring Ed Skrein, Loan Chabanol, Ray Stevenson, and Lenn Kudrjawizki

It’s not going to refuel The Transporter franchise if that’s what you’re thinking. There are some decent action set pieces, but everything else is pretty much a complete embarrassment. From the dialogue to the acting to the plot, nothing about this reboot justifies its existence. The charisma of the Statham Transporters is lost in translation.

Special features include:

  • Frank Martin: The Reluctant Hero
  • The Coeur Brise: Les Femmes of Refueled (Blu-ray Only)
  • Rocketing from 0-60 (Blu-ray Only)

One Eyed Girl (Nick Matthews) Unrated [102 min] – Travis, is a thirty-something psychiatrist haunted by the death of a former patient. On the brink of a nervous breakdown he stumbles across a group run by a charismatic leader, Father Jay. In search of answers, Travis is led deeper and deeper into the underworld of a Doom’s Day cult where he meets Grace, a mysterious teenage girl. When the cult comes under attack from the outside world, Travis must risk his life to free a girl, and save his soul. Starring Sara West, Steve Le Marquand, and Tilda Cobham-Hervey

I didn’t really know what to expect when I popped One Eyed Girl into my over-priced Blu-ray machine that I haven’t even used to play games on yet PS4. I hadn’t watched the trailer nor did I pay any attention to the synopsis. I just dove right in. What it lacks in energy, personality, and good pacing, One Eyed Girl makes up for in thought proving melodrama and layered characters. It’s a slow burn that doesn’t quite bring a return on your time investment, but it shows a lot of promise for the first time director, Nick Matthews.

  • No special features included

DVD Only

The Unauthorized Full House Story (Brian K. Roberts) Rated TV-PG [88 min] – From its start as an unassuming family comedy in 1987 to its eventual wildly popular 192-episode run, the film centers on the rise of the cast of one of America’s most beloved family sitcoms and the pressures they faced in balancing their television personas with their real lives. Starring Garrett Brawith, Justin Mader, and Justin Gaston

This unauthorized Lifetime dramatization of the behind the scenes of Full House is absolutely bizarre. I’m not quite sure those involved were thinking clearly enough to realize how bad it would turn out. It’s a trainwreck. The dialogue is beyond comprehension while the cast delivers enough cheese to kill the lovable pizza rat.

Under the Dome Season 3

Source: TV.com

TV Show Releases

Under the Dome: Season 3 (Brian K. Vaughan) Rated TV-14 [43 min] – An invisible and mysterious force field descends upon a small fictional town of Chester’s Mill, Maine, USA, trapping residents inside, cut off from the rest of civilization. The trapped townsfolk must discover the secrets and purpose of the “dome” and its origins, while coming to learn more than they ever knew about each other. Starring Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Alexander Koch

Under the Dome is what Lost would have be if audiences actually didn’t care about the many unanswered questions it decided to carry on its shoulders throughout the show’s lifespan. The third and final season of Under the Dome isn’t the ending we needed, but the one we deserve because who thought a plot point from The Simpsons Movie could be dragged out for 39-episodes? Stephen King obviously did, and it worked in his favor since it became a TV show. The best thing that we can say Under the Dome helped accomplish is provide people work to help feed their families.

Special features include:

  • Extended and Deleted Scenes
  • Return To The Dome: A Look At Season 3
  • Life Under The Dome: Behind-The-Scenes of Season 3
  • The Season Finale
  • The Device
  • Meet Indy The Dog
  • Gag Reel

The X-Files: The Complete Series (Chris Carter) Rated TV-MA [44 min] – Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder the believer and Dana Scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained while hidden forces work to impede their efforts. Starring David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and Mitch Pileggi

I didn’t get this sent to me to review, but I’d love to revisit this show one of these days. This box set has EVERYTHING.

Special features include:

Family Guy Season 13 [DVD Only] (Seth MacFarlane) Rated TV-14 [22 min] – In a wacky Rhode Island town, a dysfunctional family strive to cope with everyday life as they are thrown from one crazy scenario to another. Starring Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Mila Kunis, and Mike Henry

When will this show die? Sure, Family Guy had an amazing come back after it was cancelled and then brought back, but it’s witticisms and immaturely crude humor has become stale. And the 13th season of this series proves it. There’s nothing about Family Guy that makes me want to return to the Griffins, they have no redeeming qualities and the rest of the town of Quahog is incomparable to South Park or Springfield.

Special features include:

  • On the Road to Springfield Featurette: The Making of “The Simpsons Guy
  • Commentary on “The Simpsons Guy
  • Commentary on “Turkey Guys”
  • Commentary on “The 2000 Year-Old Virgin”
  • Commentary on “Stewie, Chris, & Brian’s Excellent Adventure”

PSX 2015: FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE Trailer Reveals Gameplay

At this year’s PlayStation Experience, held at Moscone Center in San Francisco, the first gameplay footage of the much anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake was revealed. First teased by Square Enix during Sony’s E3 press conference earlier this year, the new trailer gives the public an excellent taste at what they can expect from the upcoming release on the PlayStation 4.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer opens with Barret, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie questioning our protagonist, Cloud Strife. Our heroes briefly explain his backstory while beautifully rendered and familiar environments flash across the screen. Fans of the Final Fantasy VII may recognize the mission in the trailer our characters are preparing for, which takes place near the beginning of the game.

While half of the footage consists of cutscenes, the other half depicts the aforementioned first look gameplay, which features a brand new battle system that will replace the classic turn-based style of the original. Instead, the new combat looks similar to the Active Cross Battle system similar to what has been seen in the upcoming Final Fantasy XV. This could be jarring or even blasphemous to gamers hoping for a more pure experience to the original FFVII.

In a previous interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar),  FFVII Remake’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, admitted that “dramatic changes” would be made:

“And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable.”

Additionally, the limiting isometric camera angles of the original are also no where to be seen. Final Fantasy VII Remake appears to incorporate a third-person camera angle, as we follow Cloud through some of Midgar’s ruins with his famous Buster Sword gleaming in tow.

There is no concrete release date set for Final Fantasy VII Remake to make its big debut, but given the scope and size of the game’s story, players can probably expect it after Final Fantasy XV releases in 2016. We’ll keep you posted with any more developments throughout PSX 2015.
