RIP Gunner Hansen (1947-2015); the Original Leatherface

Gentler than his iconic horror villain counterpart Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, actor Gunner Hansen passed away Saturday evening after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Confirmation was made earlier this morning by Gunner’s agent, Mike Eisenstadt. Hansen was at his home in Northeast Harbor, Main at the time of his death.

Born in 1946 in Reykjavík, Iceland, Hansen moved to the United States at the age of five to Maine. At age 11, his family would settle in Texas. A University of Texas graduate, Hansen would meet director Tobe Hooper upon earning his Masters degree in Scandinavian Studies and English. As they would say, the rest is history.

Aside from acting, Hansen had a career as a writer and editor after The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s initial release. It wasn’t until 1988 when he would regain his itch for acting where he would go on to star in over 20 films, mainly consisting of low-budget horror titles such as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Mosquito, and Swarm of the Snakehead. In 2013, Hansen published a book entitled, “Chainsaw Confidential,” an overview of his work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre wherein he revealed his salary for the film was only $400.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre certainly left its mark in history, laying the foundation for three sequels, two remakes, and a prequel; films which have starred the likes of Renée Zellweger, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Biel, Alexandria Daddario,  R. Lee Ermey, Dennis Hopper, Viggo Mortensen, Scott Eastwood, Jordana Brewster, and Matt Bomer.

It wasn’t until after I watched 2003’s remake, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that I came became enamored in the franchise and fell in love with Tobe Hooper’s classic. It will go down as one of my all-time favorite movies.

Eisenstadt also stated that Hansen’s original screenplay, Death House, will be moving into production next year in Hansen’s memory. The film is centered around a secret government facility that becomes ground zero for a terrifying prison break.

Gunner Hansen was 68 when he died.

FANTASTIC BEASTS Plot Details, Cast, and Character Descriptions Officially Revealed

There has been much mystery surrounding the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them plot. What was originally conceived to be a faux documentary based on the life of Newt Scamander, official plot details have now been confirmed. So grab a butter beer and rejoice because not only do we know what the Fantastic Beasts plot is, we also have all the major character descriptions.

Set in the United States during the roaring ’20s, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will now be a full-blown expansion of the Harry Potter Universe. The project was warmly received by fans, but many of us muggles were wondering how they were going to turn an educational catalog into a movie trilogy. However this catalog, like Newt’s magical case he carries, is bigger-on-the-inside than it might appear.

Author and creator J.K. Rowling, who up until this point has only had creative input in the Harry Potter franchise films, penned film’s script as her first ever screenplay. Here’s the official plot synopsis for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly:

Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to New York with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK. Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous… get out of their case.

Yesterday we got our first look at Fantastic Beasts production images, and now we can put names to faces as Entertainment Weekly also presented character descriptions with their coverage:

Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander – An eccentric globe-hopping English “magizoologist” wizard who’s far more comfortable around beasts and creatures than he is around other people. Comes to New York on a quest with his case full of magical habitats containing rare and endangered species.

As soon as this project was announced, Eddie immediately came to mind. Excited to see him take on this role.

Katherine Waterston as Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein – An ambitious worker at the Magical Congress of the United States of America (aka MACUSA, the U.S. version of the Ministry of Magic) who meets Newt. Tina is relegated to an office well below her abilities after she stood up for the wrong person. She longs to fight for what’s right.

Who did she stand up for and what was the cause she is championing? Also predicting she will be Newt’s love interest.

Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein – Tina’s younger sister and roommate, a big-hearted free-spirit “legilimens” who can read minds.

Jealous, I want to read minds.

Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski – An optimistic No-Maj (aka Muggle) factory worker/aspiring baker who gets introduced to the wizarding world when he meets Newt. Fun fact: He’s the Harry Potter franchise’s first Muggle main character.

Suh-weet, now all of us muggles can feel included.

Colin Farrell as Graves – A powerful auror and the right-hand man of the American wizarding world’s president.

Collin Farrell typically goes for dark and broody. I’ll be interested to see if he will play Graves this way or if he breaks away from that.

Samantha Morton as Mary Lou – The narrow-minded leader of the fanatical Second Salemers, a group looking to expose and destroy wizards and witches.

Sounds like we have our baddy here, can she live up to the wretchedness of Dolores Umbridge?

Ezra Miller as Credence – Perhaps the cast’s most mysterious character. He’s Mary Lou’s troubled adopted son.

I love Ezra Miller, and whenever mystery and troubled are involved, you know this is right up his alley. I’m excited to see how this character pans out.

How do you think these characters will fit into the beloved Harry Potter universe? With absolutely nothing to base their characters on, do you think Newt and the rest will be as memorable as those who were fully developed over the course of seven novels?

Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them  stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Faith Wood-Blagrove, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight, and Ron Perlman. The film hits theaters on November 18, 2016.

Netflix Streaming Report: Can’t Hardly Wait, The Devil’s Advocate, Rain Main, The 100, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for November 5, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Can’t Hardly Wait, The Devil’s Advocate, Rain Main, The 100, and more.

Addams Family Values

Source: Giphy

Addams Family Values (Barry Sonnenfeld) Rated PG-13 [94 min] – A comical Gothic horror-movie-type family tries to rescue their beloved uncle from his gold-digging new love. Starring Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci [Watch the Trailer]

If you’re looking for that perfect Thanksgiving movie to get you into the holiday spirit, Addams Family Values is what you seek. Anytime I rewatch this classic family film I’m always surprised by all the little quips I missed when I was a young lad. There’s so much hilarious adult content sprinkled through dark humor that it’s easy for kids to misinterpret the humor while adults get the last laugh.

Half Baked Dave Chappelle

Source: muut

Half Baked (Tamra Davis) Rated R [82 min] – The story of three not so bright men who come up with a series of crazy schemes to get a friend out of jail. Starring Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Díaz, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, and Rachel True [Watch the Trailer]

I must have watched Half Baked a good 100 times throughout high school and college. The Dave Chappelle era was so strong that it was hard to resist. It’s a highly quotable movie, the camaraderie between friends is fantastic, and everyone is just plain hilarious. One of the all-time best comedies in my opinion.

Can’t Hardly Wait (Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan) Multicharacter teenage comedy about high school graduates with different agenda of life on graduation night. Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Seth Green, Peter Facinelli, Donald Faison, and Jaime Pressly [Watch the Trailer]

I will never not let you know that Can’t Hardly Wait has come back on Netflix. Everyone must see this movie. Just stop reading ahead. Watch the sh*t out of this movie.

Master of None Aziz Ansari Netflix

Master of None (Aziz Ansari, Alan Yang) Rated TV-MA [30 min] – New Yorker Dev takes on such pillars of maturity as the first big job, a serious relationship, and busting sex offenders on the subway. Starring Aziz Ansari, Noël Wells, Eric Wareheim, Lena Waithe, Kelvin Yu, and H. Jon Benjamin [Watch the Trailer]

First things first, I had no idea Aziz Ansari was as young as he is, 32. I thought he was at least upper 30s. Secondly, Master of None looks like a perfect balance of laughs and feels that should spark an emotional accord with everyone. I’m anticipating the series when it premieres tomorrow, Friday, November 6!

Movies on Blu-ray

Inside Out (Pete Docter and Ronaldo Del Carmen) Rated PG [94 min] – After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.Starring Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Lewis Black, and Phyllis Smith [Watch the trailer]

One of the most emotionally fueled movies of the year, literally, Inside Out proves Pixar still has a lot of amazing original story ideas left in their brain trust. It’s a fantastic exploration of the mind through colorful characters and impeccably crafted visuals. All of the special features on this disc consist of a ton of juicy tidbits that make the experience even more inspiring. A new short furthering the story of the characters, “Riley’s First Date,” is really cute and proves that these two features actually warrant the necessity of a sequel. The deleted scenes puts into light the importance of editing and storytelling because Inside Out would have been a completely different movie with the way they originally conceived Joy. Inside Out is by far one of the best uses of your time this year.

Special features include:

  • Riley’s First Date? (In-Home Exclusive Animated Short Film)
  • Lava (Theatrical Short Film, Presented in 2D & 3D)
  • Story of the Story
  • Paths to Pixar: The Women of Inside Out
  • Mixed Emotions
  • Mapping the Mind
  • Our Dads, the Filmmakers
  • Into the Unknown: The Sound of Inside Out
  • The Misunderstood Art of Animation Film Editing
  • Deleted Scenes:
    • Riley Grows Up
    • Joy’s Decline
    • Misdirection
    • Construction
  • Audio Commentary
  • Mind Candy
  • Inside Out Trailers

Toy Story That Time Forgot (Steve Purcell) Rated TV-G [22 min] – It’s a post Christmas play date and the toys have to go up against the fearsome and aggressive new dino toys. Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Kristen Schaal, Kevin McKidd, Emily Hahn, and Wallace Shawn

This has to be one of the best short films Pixar has made so far in the Toy Story universe. It has a lot of heart, the new toys are hilarious, and the little world created for this short is well thought out. In these seasonal, longer shorts, Pixar is putting more emphasis on secondary characters. In Toy Story of Terror it’s Jesse, and here in Toy Story That Time Forgot it’s Trixie. These bite-sized shorts bring a lot of joy to my face and I hope they continue making them.

Special features include:

  • Reptillus!
  • Commentary
  • Toy Story Goes to Comic-Con
  • My Unexpected Friend
  • Battlesaurs Animated Opening
  • Deleted Scenes with Intros & Outros:
    • Battlesaurs Christmas
    • Light of Play
    • Prisoners of Bone
    • SOS
    • Trixie’s Proposal

Vacation (John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein) Rated R [99 min] – Rusty Griswold takes his own family on a road trip to “Walley World” in order to spice things up with his wife and reconnect with his sons. Starring Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Skyler Gisondo, and Steele Stebbins

Vacation adds fuel to the fire in that it proves we need to stop creating comedy sequels years past their predecessors. Happy Gilmore is a wonderfully entertaining movie, and the idea of developing a sequel is groan worthy; exactly how I felt every minute watching Vacation. The jokes are terribly eye-roll inducing and the characters are all moronically hardly resonating. The best thing Vacation has to offer are the various cameos.

Special features include:

  • Return to Walley World
  • The Griswold Odyssey
  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Georgia

The End of the Tour (James Ponsoldt) [Limited] Rated R [106 min] – The story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace, which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking epic novel, ‘Infinite Jest.’ Starring Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Anna Chlumsky, and Mamie Gummer

I’ve never read any of David Foster Wallace’s works, but after watching The End of the Tour a foundation of interest has been built. The dynamic between Eisenberg and Segel is absolutely incredible to watch because the their interactions on screen feel wholeheartedly organic. I was hanging on every word the two exchanged as if I was watching magic happen before my eyes or a debate I actually cared about. In this characterization of Wallace himself, as portrayed by Segel, the author comes across as a very layered and complex individual and I’m now intrigued at how his persona would be carried into his writing.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary by Director James Ponsoldt, Screenwriter Donald Margulies, and Actor Jason Segel
  • “Behind the Tour” Featurette
  • A Conversation with Composer Danny Elfman
  • Deleted Scenes

Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas (Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh) Rated TV-G [43 min] – An elf leaves the North Pole to find his dad, who is on the naughty list. Starring Mark Hamill, Jim Parsons, Kate Micucci, and Ed Asner

I’m not entirely sure who thought remaking Jon Favreau’s Elf into a stop-motion animated film with Buddy, but it was completely unnecessary. The live-action Will Ferrell movie is already enough of a children’s movie to be fun for all ages, and choosing Jim Parsons (CBS’s The Big Bang Theory) as the voice for Buddy, in a musical nonetheless, was a poor choice too. Buddy’s already kind of annoying with his child-like humor and by giving him the voice of Jim Parsons makes him unbearable, especially when he sings.

Special features include:

  • “Elf-in’ All The Way: Inside Buddy’s Recording Sessions.”
Batman Adam West

Television Series

Batman: The Complete Third Season (1966–1968) ( William Dozier, Bill Finger, and Lorenzo Semple Jr.) Rated TV-G [30 min] – The Caped Crusader battles evildoers in Gotham City in a bombastic 1960s parody of the comic book hero’s exploits. Starring Adam West, Burt Ward, Alan Napier, Neil Hamilton, and Stafford Repp

The original Batman series starring Adam West is all about fun detective high jinks. There isn’t any overarching plot threads, it’s not very serialized, and all of the characters maintain their surface level comic roots. The third season boasts some pretty good episodes if you’re a collector.

Box Office Battlefield: Burnt, Scouts vs. Zombies, and Our Brand is Crisis

Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious cinematic battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. The weekend warriors of October 30, 2015 includes Burnt, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and Our Brand is Crisis. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take precedence over the others while also taking a look at which will come out on top.

Last weekend, The Martian capitalized on one of the busiest slated schedules of the year with five new wide releases vying for your attention, all of which largely under performed with The Last Witch Hunter, debuting fourth at the box office, making out the best with only $10.8 million. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension scavanged a meager $8.07 million landing sixth. Steve Jobs expanded to over 2,400 theaters after its successful limited run and only raked in $7.10 million. Rock the Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms both opened with some of the worst first weekend domestic hauls for movies in over 2,000 theaters. Rock the Kasbah placed 13th and grossed $1.47 million while Jem and the Holograms took in $1.37 million placing 15th.

With three new releases this weekend, two of which have Oscar potential while the other has the advantage of being a comedic horror just in time for Halloween, there’s a good chance the reigning champ could be dethroned. Can Bradley Cooper bat those blue eyes for top dollar? Will Sandra Bullock avoid a box office crisis? Or will a bunch scouts use their resources to to upset all expectations. Should you see ’em, skip ’em, or rent ’em?

This is the Box Office Battlefield:

Burnt 2015 Movie Title Logo

Burnt (John Wells) Rated R [101 min] – Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) is a Chef who destroyed his career with drugs and diva behavior. He cleans up and returns to London, determined to redeem himself by spearheading a top restaurant that can gain three Michelin stars. Starring Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl, and Riccardo Scamarcio [Watch the Trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 29% • Audience – 57%

My review:

While Burnt offers a tremendous cast who all perform exceptionally well, the film makes little effort to develop an understanding in its characters’ motivations to work with or support Bradley Cooper’s Adam Jones. Though he is admittedly one of the greatest chefs to live in this world, and a certain level of respect is expected, I’m not convinced there is proof to believe why anyone would want to put themselves through the Hell’s Kitchen-like atmosphere for a man who has been absent from the industry for the past three years. I think that Burnt has a ton of potential, filled with unique characters who aren’t given enough to do, and a plot that that has all the ripe ingredients to be cinematically delicious. However, everything in Burnt is very surface level and there’s no rhyme or reason for us to care about Jone’s mission to redeem himself and earn his third Michelin star. There is more heart and better food porn in Chef. RENT IT!

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Movie Title Logo

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (Christopher Landon) Rated R [93 min] – Three scouts, on the eve of their last camp-out, discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak. Starring Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan, and Sarah Dumont [Watch the Trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 32% • Audience – 61%

My review:

I really believed that Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse had the potential to be greater than what the end product delivered. An infusion of both Superbad and Zombieland, two movies I highly enjoy, Scouts Guide is pretty average on all levels. The characters are your typical tripod: the outlandish and outspoken hothead, the socially awkward outcast, and the aloof kid next door who doesn’t know his potential. All the actors do well and fit their roles comfortably, but it’s all familiar. The set pieces are fresh, but the results are predictable. And although the premise is wildly different than most zombie movies, more often than not the film treads down paths we’ve seen a thousand times over. WATCH IT ON NETFLIX!

Our Brand is Crisis Movie Title Logo

Our Brand Is Crisis (David Gordon Green) Rated R [107 min] – An American woman, well-versed in political campaigns, is sent to the war-torn lands of South America to help install a new leader but is threatened to be thwarted by a long-term rival. Starring Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie, and Joaquim de Almeida [Watch the Trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 33% • Audience – 47%

Their reviews:

“The film becomes a Sandra Bullock vehicle, and while it’s buoyed by her typical comic aplomb, it loses sight of the bigger picture.” – Scott Tobias (NPR)

“[A] chaotic, scrappy, deeply cynical look at political puppet masters.” – Jordan Hoffman (Mashable)

My take:

Sandra Bullock joints have never captured my attention. I think she’s a fine actress who can fulfill most roles that are asked of her with grace and finesse. According to critics, the film doesn’t seem to takeoff despite it’s solid cast and general appeal surrounding its original documentary source material. The marketing spews out every beat, leaving little to the imagination. The biggest red flag that keeps me from getting on board with Our Brand is that I can’t seem to find an angle as to why Bullock’s character cares enough to back this government official’s campaign.RENT IT!

Freaks of Nature 2015 Movie Title Logo

Freaks of Nature (Robbie Pickering) [Limited] Rated R [Time N/A] – In the town of Dillford, humans, vampires and zombies were all living in peace – until the alien apocalypse arrived. Now three teenagers-one human, one vampire, and one zombie-have to team up to figure out how to get rid of the visitors.Starring Nicholas Braun, Mackenzie Davis, Josh Fadem, and Denis Leary [Watch the Red Band Trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – XX% • Audience – 78%

Their reviews:

“Doesn’t offer connective tissue, bellylaughs, and scares. It’s just a shapeless creation that didn’t survive the production process, rendering a promising premise forgettable.” – Brian Orndorf (Blu-ray.com)

“There’s a whole lot of arid downtime in between the ostensibly colorful set pieces, and on the whole the movie seems like it was edited with a blender.” – Scott Weinberg (Nerdist)

My take:

Originally titled Kitchen Sink, I had hopes that this concept would prove to be a lot of fun and smarter than your average bear. Sadly, after watching the trailer I can’t say that Freaks of Nature looks anything beyond a terrible B-horror movie. The initial title says it all. It’s got everything jam packed into a little feature that has weak legs to stand on. There’s very little draw and looks like a jumbled mess. WAIT FOR IT ON NETLIX!

Love Gasper Noe Movie Title Logo

Love (Gaspar Noé) [Limited] [Rating N/A] [135 min] – Murphy is an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with the unstable Electra. Unaware of the effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed. Starring Aomi Muyock, Karl Glusman, Klara Kristin, and Juan Saavedra

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 52% • Audience – 49%

Their reviews:

“Noé clearly wants to chart his own path, but as his movie chronicles that desire rather than realizing it, Noé mainly succeeds at broadcasting his intentions. That’s an achievement in its own right, if not enough to make for a satisfying movie.” – Eric Kohn (IndieWIRE)

“It may be hardcore XXX but “Love” is Noe at his most softhearted following the brutality of “Irreversible” and his most straightforward, following the mindfuckery of “Enter the Void” so it may even leave his fans feeling underwhelmed.” – Jessica Kiang (The Playlist)

My take:

Gaspar Noé’s films have always been controversially polarizing, i.e. Irréversible and Enter the Void. I don’t expect anything less with Love. The marketing is very tight lipped on the story, but the word buzzing about the film regarding the sex is the talk of the town. That’s not really a selling point for me, but from what other critics are saying, you’re going to either be on board or not. It’s a gamble that I’m willing to take because I have an interest in Noé’s filmography. The plot seems simple enough, and if he can tell a compelling story then all the power to this film. RENT IT!

Despite the slew of many new films lately, everything has been very lackluster. There are so many options that it’s hard to believe that The Martian continues to dominate over its competition. And it might happen again this weekend.

Burnt offers Bradley Cooper, but after the horrendous showing for Aloha the mega star and Oscar nominee may not be the biggest draw box office wise without some kind of mainstream hook like Guardians of the Galaxy or Jennifer Lawrence by his side. The cast is superb, but a grab bag of talent that many average Joe/Jane movie goers may not be too familiar with. And the negative reviews are not building a case for Burnt either.

Our Brand is Crisis has a more known, reputable cast; it has an Avenger. But I think the subject matter and the boring marketing campaign will turn folks away.

Although it may be Halloween weekend, and Scouts Guide seems like the best choice for the weekend, the movie is pretty silly and also Rated R, limiting the audience count to a select few who will more than likely be at costume parties rather than holed up in a movie theater.

The Martian is still going strong, and it’s positive word of mouth continues to drive in crowds. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend will be:

Winner: The Martian

The DIRTY GRANDPA Teaser is the Most Uncomfortable Thing You Can Watch Today

Comfort zones have been breached beyond their limitations with the first Dirty Grandpa teaser trailer starring Zac Efron and Robert De Niro. One continues to push his career away from what made him a star while the other engages in full on sexcapades with Aubrey Plaza. You figure out which one we’re talking about here.

I’ll admit, I chuckled a few times watching the trailer – wanna fight about it? I didn’t have an uproarious time, but there were a handful of giggles brought on to ease the uncomfortable feeling when Robert De Niro squirts sun tan lotion on Aubrey Plaza (Life After Beth; The To Do List) or him motor-boating her or the direction of De Niro’s career in general.

The one thing in the Dirty Grandpa teaser that surprised me the most is Aubrey Plaza’s transition from her hilarious, cynical deadpan shtick to hilarious, deadpan sex object. It will be a jarring post-Parks and Recreation world, and as delightful as it is to see the actress gaining work, is this the best use of her talents? (I mean her acting and comedic sensibility, not boobs ya pervs.)

Zac Efron might be the only one who walks away unscathed. Dirty Grandpa continues to lead the actor away from his Disney roots after That Awkward Moment, Neighbors, and this year’s huge flop We Are Your Friends. He’s definitely proven he can work out of his element and is shaping his own path fairly well. And poor Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages; Footloose; Safe Haven) portrays the nagging shrew of a fiancée, a caricature that feels way too old hat, much like the entire movie.

If this whole “Dirty” thing pays off it could spark a whole slew of copycats. Like how Bad Grandpa, Bad Words, and Bad Teacher followed in the footsteps of Bad Santa. I can only imagine it now, Dirty Grandma starring Helen Mirren and Anna Kendrick, Dirty Stepdad starring Danny McBride and Michael Cera, or Dirty Postman starring Jason Sudeikis. I’d actually see Dirty Grandma if it starred those two – pay me Hollywood.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Dirty Grandpa, courtesy of Lionsgate:

Jason Kelly [Zac Efron] is one week away from marrying his boss’s uber-controlling daughter, putting him on the fast track for a partnership at the law firm. However, when the straight-laced Jason is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed grandfather, Dick [Robert De Niro], to Daytona for spring break, his pending nuptials are suddenly in jeopardy. Between riotous frat parties, bar fights, and an epic night of karaoke, Dick is on a quest to live his life to the fullest and bring Jason along for the ride. Ultimately, on the wildest journey of their lives, “dirty” Grandpa and his uptight grandson discover they can learn from one another and form the bond they never had.

Directed by Dan Mazer, Dirty Grandpa stars Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Zoey Deutch, Aubrey Plaza, Dermot Mulroney, and Julianne Hough. The film hits theaters on January 22, 2016.

Kung Fury Movie

Kung Fury (David Sandberg) Unrated [31 min] – In 1985, Kung Fury, the toughest martial artist cop in Miami, goes back in time to kill the worst criminal of all time – kung fuhrer Hitler. Starring David Sandberg, Jorma Taccone, and Steven Chew

Everything about David Sandberg’s crowdfunded project is simply magical. The delightful insanity of Kung Fury makes this project worth every penny donated. Tremendous love and support was put into the production of this fantastical ode to martial arts and police action films of the ’80s. Kung Fury finds the perfect combo of the two, delivering fun action, the cheesiest one-liners, and an awesome ’80s synth score.

Chasing Life Season 2

Chasing Life Season 2 (Susanna Fogel, Joni Lefkowitz, and Ricardo Álvarez Canales) [42 min] – Follows a young woman’s life after she is diagnosed with cancer. Starring Italia Ricci, Mary Page Keller, Richard Brancatisano, Haley Ramm, Aisha Dee, Scott Michael Foster, Rebecca Schull, Jessica Meraz, and Steven Weber

Although I haven’t indulged in the second season of Chasing Life, I rather enjoyed the first. All of the characters are pretty well written, strong, and well-acted by a group of young, talented actors. This is the final season since ABC Family pulled the plug earlier this year. From what I’ve been told, they do leave the series nicely wrapped up for those like myself who desire closure.

August: Osage County Meryl Streep

Source: AwardsWatch

August: Osage County (John Wells) A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Starring Meryl Streep, Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Sam Shepard,  Julianne Nicholson,  Margo Martindale, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Chris Cooper

For me, August: Osage County is a solid movie that only needs to be seen once. The performances from the spectacularly cast bunch are a treat as they each have their own moment to shine, especially Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep of course. But the rest of the family involved all have their own place and purpose. It’s a well-rounded film that doesn’t completely wow, but overall it’s not a bad sit if

Movies on Blu-ray

Pixels (Chris Columbus) Rated PG-13 [105 min] – When aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth in the form of the video games. Starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, and Brian Cox

This movie is a load of garbage that houses great potential and squanders it to present little entertainment value. Pixels is far better than a lot of the flops Adam Sandler has dished out recently, but that’s like saying one episode of The Walking Dead is more upbeat and chipper than the others. The characters are horrendous to root for and the women are given nothing to do and written terribly. This movie was DOA as soon as they announced Adam Sandler’s name.

Special features include:

  • Two Featurettes
    • Q*Bert – The adorable digital bit hopper comes to life in PIXELS!
    • Dojo Quest – A look at the new classic arcade game that gave life to the unstoppable Lady Lisa.
  • Game On Music Video by Waka Flocka Flame ft. Good Charlotte
  • Six Featurettes (Blu-ray Exclusive):
    • The Creator of the Machine
    • The Space Invader
    • PAC-MAN
    • Donkey Kong
    • Centipede
    • Galaga

Southpaw (Antoine Fuqua) Rated R [123 min] – Boxer Billy Hope turns to trainer Tick Willis to help him get his life back on track after losing his wife in a tragic accident and his daughter to child protection services. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Oona Laurence, Forest Whitaker, Naomi Harris, and 50 Cent

If you’ve seen one boxing movie you’ve seen Southpaw. Jake Gyllenhaal is a physical powerhouse and a big presence on screen, but there’s hardly any depth to him or his characters to really care or set him apart from any other boxing story we’ve seen before. There’s also very little energy, which is surprisingly with how electrifying and tense boxing can be.

Special features include:

  • Deleted scenes
  • Southpaw: Inside the Ring
  • Q&A with Cast
  • Extended Training Montage

The Gift (Joel Edgerton) Rated R [108 min] – A young married couple’s lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband’s past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years. Starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton, and Allison Tolman

One of the more surprising films of the year, The Gift delivers many twists and turns that lead up to a very rewarding climax. There haven’t been too many revelatory films quite like The Gift that really shake things up right to the very end and make you think about the actions and the consequences of the characters. Joel Edgerton did a fantastic job as a first time director, while also performing quite well.

Special features include:

  • Alternate Ending [with Optional Introduction by Writer/Director Joel Edgerton]
  • Deleted Scenes [with Optional Introduction by Writer/Director Joel Edgerton]
  • Karma for Bullies
  • The Darker Side of Jason Bateman
  • Feature Commentary with Writer/Director Joel Edgerton

Max (Boaz Yakin) Rated PG [111 min] – A dog that helped US Marines in Afghanistan returns to the U.S. and is adopted by his handler’s family after suffering a traumatic experience. Starring Thomas Haden Church, Josh Wiggins, Luke Kleintank, and Lauren Graham

There seems to be two different movies here: a family-friendly romp about coping with loss and a dark, underground story about cartels and weapons. Max has weird tonal shifts that can’t find an acceptable middle to find enjoyable. It leans far on one side or the other. The film has all the best intentions but because of its mishandled direction it isn’t quite the compelling film it seeks out to be.

Special features include:

  • Working with Max: Meet the dogs that play “Max” and see inside tricks of the trade!
  • Hero Dogs: A Journey – Get a behind-the-scenes look at amazing military trained K9s.

Other Titles Now Available

  • Sailor Moon R: Season 2 Part 2
  • My Fair Lady (50th Anniversary Edition)
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail (40th Anniversary Edition)
  • The Human Centipede [The Final Sequence]
  • Downton Abbey: Seasons 1-5

Halo 5: Guardians (343 Industries) [Available only for Xbox One] – A mysterious and unstoppable force threatens the galaxy, the Master Chief is missing and his loyalty questioned. Experience the most dramatic Halo story to date in a 4-player cooperative epic that spans three worlds.

Is it weird that I haven’t played a Halo game in earnest since Halo 3? I played Halo 4 once, but the controls felt foreign to me with the introduction of the new armor abilities. I’ve always loved playing multiplayer for Halo and the single-player campaign have intrigued me for the most part, which Halo 5: Guardians definitely tickles my fancy. But the fact that I don’t own an Xbox One kind of prohibits my ability to try this game out.

Key game features include:

  • Challenge friends and rivals in new multiplayer modes: Warzone, massive 24-player battles, and Arena, pure 4-vs-4 competitive combat.
  • Choose how to achieve objectives while playing solo with AI teammates or with friends in a 4-player cooperative experience using your Xbox Live 14-day Gold trial.
  • New, massive-scale multiplayer mode that supports 24-player battles with both friendly and enemy AI dropping in. It’s nonstop action when you confront Spartans, Covenant, and Forerunners while trying to complete a variety of objectives.
