Blu-Ray Movies

Star Trek Into DarknessThis movie hasn’t grown on me, nor has it settled any better over time. It’s a visual spectacle, but the story is so weak it’s kind of hard to suggest it as an immediate purchase – especially when there are only 40 minutes or so of bonus features. (See Review Here)

Peeple’s – Yet another Tyler Perry production came out earlier this year. To my surprise it was tolerable, but bordered on complete lunacy. If you enjoy slapstick-y comedy, that almost mirrors Meet the Parents with Ben Stiller, but with an African American family, than this might be right up your alley. The characters are a bit flat, but the comedy set pieces are slightly amusing. Craig Robinson does a great job at maintaining your attention.

Frankenstein’s Army – If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary to watch this October, pick up Frankenstein’s Army. Despite the found footage, first-person perspective, this film is wildly creative with its monsters and set design. The Russian characters set in World War II can be a bit cartoon-y, but this is a great B-movie horror with all the fun that is expected from the sub-genre. The extras are a bit stingy, and the colors are pretty flushed out and gritty, but it is a rather interesting, original concept.

The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D 20th Anniversary – Equipped with a Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy, this 20th anniversary edition is a Nightmare’s fans wet dream. The extras include “What’s This?” Jack’s Haunted Mansion Holiday Tour, Frankenweenie, Tim Burton’s 1984 short film (Uncut Version), Vincent, Tim Burton’s 1982 short film, Tim Burton’s Original Poem narrated by Christopher Lee, Audio Commentary by Tim Burton, Director Henry Selick, and Music Designer Danny Elfman, Behind-The-Scenes Making Of The Movie, The Worlds Of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Deleted Scenes.

Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection – Actually released Friday the 13th of course, not the 10th, this blu-ray box set comes with all twelve films of the iconic franchise. The set also includes a 40-page soft cover book, excerpted from Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th, highlighting over 200 interviews, 600 photos, storyboards, concept art, and more. Also included is a brand new, official Camp Crystal Lake embroidered Counselor Patch, and a DVD bonus features disc. All for the price of around $100 ain’t too shabby if you can get past Jason Takes Manhattan.

Television

Homeland: The Complete Second Season – If you still need to watch this series and catch up like I do, now’s your chance before the season 3 premiere on September 29.

Supernatural: The Complete Fourth Season – There’s an interesting cult following surrounding this show that has me wonder if The CW knows what they’re doing.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Sixth Season – I hope this show ends.

The League: The Complete Fourth Season – The best part about The League is that you don’t have to know anything about fantasy football. These cooky, sociopathic Chicagoans are some of the most colorful characters on TV today and one of the most underrated comedies as well. You can get a crash course on the show on Netflix right now.

Video Games

NHL 14 – It’s really hard to top Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey for the Nintendo 64, but developers continue to try.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX – If you’re one of the gajillion fans behind the Kingdom Hearts franchise, this HD “ReMIX” should be suitable enough to wet your whistle until Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out.
