The Flash Season 1 (Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, and Andrew Kreisberg) Rated TV-PG [43 min] – Barry Allen wakes up 9 months after he was struck by lightning and discovers that the bolt gave him the power of super speed. With his new team and powers, Barry becomes “The Flash” and fights crime in Central City. Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavangh, and Jesse L. Martin

This is a series that demands your attention. You may think that The Flash is just a throwaway character based on his abilities, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. And more to this show as well. There’s a clever balance of comic wit, fun action, and colorful characters that makes The Flash a very formidable and one of the best superhero series ever created. It’s so detailed in developing the character that there just isn’t enough time spent with the scarlet speedster that the second season hasn’t come soon enough!

Arrow Season 3

Arrow Season 3 (Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg) –  Spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow. Starring Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, and David Ramsey

Despite a slow, almost uninteresting first season, Arrow has continually progressed to become a series that has rewarded patience. The third season presents a more transitional period for Oliver that sets up big change our heroes, and right now, having all three seasons on Netflix, is the best time to catch up!

iZombie Season 1 (Diane Ruggiero and Rob Thomas) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – A medical resident finds that being a zombie has its perks, which she uses to assist the police. Starring Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, and Blaine DeBeers

I was surprised how digestible iZombie actually is when I checked out the first few episodes. It’s playful and silly, but in a good way that works in the strange world it has created for itself.

American Horror: Story: Freak Show (Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk) Rated TV-MA [43 min] – An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a haunted house, an insane asylum, a witch coven and a freak show. Starring Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Michael Chiklis, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Emma Roberts, Finn Wittrock, Angela Bassett, and Kathy Bates

I have yet to see Freak Show, but I have not heard any positives toward this season. It has all the right elements, so I look forward to seeing this train wreck and why it broke many fans.

Now Available to Own: The Age of Adaline, Gotham, Super Mario Maker, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of September 8, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are The Age of Adaline, Gotham, Super Mario Maker, and more.

blake lively age of adaline

Movies on Blu-ray

The Age of Adaline (Lee Toland Krieger) Rated PG-13 [110 min] – A young woman, born at the turn of 20th century, is rendered ageless after an accident. After years of a solitary life, she meets a man who might be worth losing her immortality for. Starring Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford, Kathy Baker, Ellen Burstyn, and Amanda Crew

In an age where most romantic films have dissolved into some kind of tween fantasy or a sloppy rom com with poop jokes, The Age of Adaline may have a sci-fi concept but at least it proves that Hollywood still has the capacity to produce an original story about love. Harrison Ford and Blake Lively give very genuine and heartfelt performances that truly speak to their talent. It’s not perfect, as some elements like Adaline’s current romance feel forced, however The Age of Adaline tells a good story enough to where you care about her outcome.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary with Director Lee Toland Krieger
  • “A Love Story for the Ages” featurette
  • “Style Throughout the Ages” featurette
  • “Discovering Young Harrison Ford: Anthony Ingruber, An Online Sensation” featurette
  • Deleted Scenes

American Heist (Sarik Andreasyan) Rated R [94 min] – James owes his life to his older brother, Frankie after taking the rap for a crime they committed together. While Frankie served time, James worked to turn his life around, got a steady job and began courting his former girlfriend Emily. Now, Frankie is released and back on the streets with no money and no place to go. Starring Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, and Jordana Brewster

Generic, derivative, and lacking any kind of imagination, American Heist simply does not come across as the edgy and stylish cinematic adventure it hopes to be. The title alone says all you need to know about the film. The actors do the best they can, but even the dialogue drags down the movie. Maybe if American Heist came out 20 years ago it would have had folks talking. Instead it wastes the talent of Adrien Brody and my time.

Special features include:

  • “Creating a Complex Caper: Pulling off American Heist” featurette

Television Series

Supernatural: The Complete Tenth Season (Eric Kripke) Rated TV-14 [44 min]Two brothers follow their father’s footsteps as “hunters” fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth. Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, and Misha Collins

It takes a lot of gusto in order keep a series running for 10 seasons. And you can tell by watching this last season of Supernatural that the show has definitely come under some strain. The plot of Season 10 definitely meanders with little purpose while character motivations are hard to understand at times. There definitely are stronger seasons than this. Supernatural is beyond its prime and I hope the producers reach a satisfying ending rather than driving this beloved show into the ground.

Special features include:

  • A Very Special Supernatural Special
  • Supernatural Theatre: Staging the 200th Episode
  • The Winchester Mythology: Battling the Mark and the Blade
  • Supernatural Fans
  • Supernatural at Comic-Con 2014
  • Three (3) Audio Commentaries
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

Gotham: The Complete First Season (Bruno Heller) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – The story behind Commissioner James Gordon’s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman’s arrival. Starring Ben McKenzie, Jada Pinkett Smith, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Robin Lord Taylor

So what’s all the hubbub about Gotham? There isn’t much. I enjoy mostly anything to do with Batman, so I was curious as to how they would approach the material. My biggest problem is that all the interconnected stories of the major players in Gotham feel forced. Young Catwoman doesn’t need to be telling young Bruce Wayne how life on the streets is, it could be anyone or it could be learned differently. Why does [Poison] Ivy have to be a sad orphan girl? She doesn’t have to be a part of the show; her character serves no purpose other than a wink to the fans.

We spend most of our time in the Gotham City Police Department and yet we hardly know anyone on the force and are never given any real reason why the cops that are dirty are the way they are. It’s an underdeveloped show with no depth other than the lore of Batman. Efforts are focused in too many which ways that pertain to Batman and not enough on the main characters who actually serve purpose. There are moments where Gotham teases its full potential and allows itself to take a step away from Batman mythology; this is what I find fascinating. When Gotham can separate itself in order to tell an interesting story set within Gotham City, that’s when the show captures my interest.

Special features include:

  • Extended Pilot Episode
  • Gotham Invented: Building Our Gotham
  • Gotham Invented: Paving the Way for the Caped Crusader
  • Gotham Invented: Fractured Villains of Gotham
  • Designing the Fiction
  • The Game of Cobblepot
  • Gag Reel
  • Unaired Scenes
  • DC Comics Night at Comic-Con 2014 Presenting Gotham, The Flash, Constantine and Arrow
  • GOTHAM: The Legend Reborn
  • Character Profiles

More Titles Now Available (I Haven’t Seen These):

  • Homeland: The Complete Fourth Season
  • Ramma 1/2: Set 7
  • Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
  • The Man Who Wasn’t There
  • American Heist
  • Haven: Season 1 Vol. 1

Video Games

Super Mario Maker [Nintendo] (Available Sept. 11 on Nintendo Wii U) – The Mario experience of your dreams has arrived and is bursting with creativity… including yours! Play a near-limitless number of intensely creative Super Mario levels from players around the world. It’s easy enough to create your own levels with the Wii U GamePad controller that it may feel like you’re simply sketching out your ideas on paper, but you can now bring enemies and objects into a playable course in ways you could only dream of before. What was impossible in traditional Mario games is now impossibly fun, so let your imagination run wild!

I had the chance to play this game at various conventions, but never took it. The concept of the game provides very little appeal to me. However, I commend those who are creative enough to build some pretty unique levels. I see this game being fun for about a week and players growing tired of it thereafter. The novelty of it all will wear off quickly.

Key features:

  • Play a near-limitless number of Mario levels created by Nintendo and players around the world.
  • Create your own Mario levels by using the Wii U GamePad controller touch screen to add enemies, blocks, pipes and more.
  • Break the conventions of traditional Super Mario gameplay by blending enemies, traps and items into unexpected twists, like Piranha Plant-shooting cannons, power-up-tossing Lakitus, or even Hammer Bros. riding on Bowser while bouncing on trampolines..
  • Touch control, instant editing and a robust online ranking and search system makes creating, playing and sharing a seamless process .
  • Switch between four distinct themes, each with different art styles and features:
  • Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U.
  • Transform into different characters at random with the new Mystery Mushroom item. Expand the roster of possible characters by completing 100 Mario Challenge mode or tapping compatible amiibo.
  • Tap a 30th Anniversary Mario amiibo figure to the Wii U GamePad controller to add a Big Mushroom power-up to your course!
  • Each retail copy of the game will come with a special booklet that offers fun ideas for designing courses.

Enter Supergirl! Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El but didn’t arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin. Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant, Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head, Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world. Her foes include both a sinister extraterrestrial menace and the high-tech terrestrial threat of clever villains with powerful weaponry. The series stars Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee), Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy), and Mehcad Brooks (True Blood), with David Harewood (Homeland) and Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters), and is executive produced by Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow), Ali Adler (Chuck), Andrew Kreisberg (The Flash, Arrow) and Sarah Schechter (Pan, The Flash). As Weller and his teammates at the FBI begin to investigate the veritable treasure map found in Jane Doe’s tattoos, they are drawn into a high-stakes underworld that twists and turns through a labyrinth of secrets and revelations-the information they uncover might ultimately change the world. In addition to Stapleton and Alexander, the series stars Rob Brown (Treme), Audrey Esparza (Public Morals), Ukweli Roach (Eternal Law), Ashley Johnson (The Killing), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without a Trace). Torn apart from their loved ones, the survivors trapped within the cordon are fighting against not only fatal infection but also isolation, fear, and the disintegration of society around them. But as they begin to gain each other’s trust, hope remains, and on either side of the cordon unlikely heroes will rise. Containment stars David Gyasi (Interstellar), Christina Moses (How We Met), Chris Wood (The Vampire Diaries), Kristen Gutoskie, Claudia Black (The Originals), George Young, Hanna Mangan Lawrence ( Spartacus: Vengeance), and Trevor St. John (One Life to Live). Based on the original Belgian series created by Carl Joos for Eyeworks, Containment is produced by My So-Called Company in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and David Nutter (The Flash, Arrow).

The very thought disturbs him. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell.
