Empty your wallets and check your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available To Own for the week of September 17, 2013. Each week we run down new releases in movies, television series, and video games that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home. On shelves this week, you can find titles such as World War Z, Bates Motel Season One, Grand Theft Auto 5, and The Bling Ring. Check out the complete list of new releases after the jump.
World War Z – If you enjoyed this movie to some degree, I would be hard-pressed to figure that you may be interested in what the unrated cut features. Exactly what new scenes could they have added? But then again you may want to wait it out until the disc goes on sale because the only special feature is a behind the scenes look. It was an OK movie, but not enough to buy with one special feature.
The Bling Ring – This movie makes more for a quiet night in or a rainy day pick. There isn’t anything unique about this film, but Emma Watson’s performance alone is worth your time. Hermoine goes to some dark places. Special features include; Making The Bling Ring: On Set with Sofia, the Cast and Crew, Behind the Real Bling Ring, and Scene of the Crime with Paris Hilton.
The East – Brit Marling (Another Earth; Sound of my Voice) strikes again. Everyone’s favorite indie princess debuted her third feature film, which turned out a lot more mainstream friendly. With Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgard, The East turns out to be a pretty good watch. Aside from the cast, it’s the story that really captivates your attention. Be careful which version of this film you purchase the Blu-ray/DVD features include: Two Brothers: Collaboration, Cause and Effect: The Movement of The East, and Examining the Moral Gray; while just the Blu-ray features include: The East Exposed: The Story, Off the Grid: Creating the Story, Casting The East, and Deleted Scenes. I would assume the BR/DVD copy has all of those features too, but just check to be sure. The press release doesn’t say otherwise.
Disconnect – It’s a lot like Crash with a ragtag group of stories that intertwine through a series of happenstances via social media and the Interwebs. I wouldn’t call this an absolute terrible film, but nothing about this movie is very exciting or new. The best part of seeing this film in theaters was watching three idiots go on their phones. Perhaps you can disconnect at home if you rent this.
Behind the Candelabra – Claiming to be his last feature film, Steven Soderbergh puts together a very interesting piece starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. The movie is based on 6-year relationship between Liberace and his much younger lover, Scott Thorson. I’ve only heard good things, and am interested to see what Soderbergh’s “last” movie is all about – he’s had so many.
Also available are four classics now on Blu-ray: James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931), James Whale’s The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Tod Browning’s Dracula (1931), George Waggner’s The Wolf Man (1941)
Grimm: The Complete Second Season – I’d highly suggest this Blu-ray for any fans of Grimm based on the extensive list of special features, which include: Deleted Scenes, Gag Reel, Grimm: Myths, Monsters & Legends, Grimm: Creatures and Chaos, Bad Hair Day Webisodes, Monroe’s Best Moments, and Grimm Guide – Explore the creatures of Grimm with this interactive guide.
Arrow: The Complete First Season – Arrow comes in a nice little package. Along with the blu-ray copies, you get DVD and digital copy versions. The special features include: Deleted Scenes, Gag Reel, Arrow Comes Alive, Arrow: Fight School/Stunt School, and 2013 Paley Festival Q&A.
Bates Motel: The Complete First Season – Bates Motel also includes DVD and Digital versions along with your Blu-ray purchase. But unfortunately this set skimps on the extras with only the Paley Center Panel Discussion with Cast and Creative Team and Deleted Scenes.
Grand Theft Auto 5 – Coming out as one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, GTAV has been rated very highly and we expect good things from its release. Rockstar Games has created the largest open world ever of the series. They’ve included three playable protagonists and offers more “recreational” activities. But if you’re looking for more fun, the Special Edition includes: a Collectible SteelBook with Exclusive Artwork, Blueprint Map, Special Ability Boost, Stunt Plane Trials, Bonus Outfits, Tattoos and More, and Additional Weapons.
