Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have released the first teaser poster and plot details for the Despicable Me spin-off film, Minions. Banking on the popularity of the cute, gibberish speaking henchmen, this new adventure with the Minions will take audiences back to the beginning of time to when they served different masters of evil. Learn more about Minions after the break.
Full disclosure, I’m no fan of Despicable Me. The first movie had some interesting ideas, but didn’t offer anything memorable other than “IT’S SO FLUFFY!” I think the Minions work in small doses, but the filmmakers sacrifice the momentum of the story in order to interject some silly physical humor with them. It can sometimes be funny, but most of the time it’s a one and done gag that doesn’t really build up to anything of substance.
Now giving them a full movie is quite endeavor, especially when they can’t speak. They are quite the animated little sort that make their actions speak louder than words, but can co-directors Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me 1 & 2) and Kyle Balda (The Lorax) make these side characters work within a cohesive narrative for 90 minutes? And with the introduction of another supervillain, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), for the Minions to serve, hopefully the movie doesn’t lose track of its title characters.

It’s a simple poster that will surely make kids’ eyes light up to the thought of seeing the huggable yellow Minions on the big screen again. I’m just glad for once a movie poster finally puts names correctly in order in the position they are displayed.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for Minions:
Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. Rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.
Minions hits theaters on July 10, 2015 in 3D and 2D.
