While the first trailer for Disney’s upcoming, live-action adaptation of Cinderella focused more on reassuring audiences that this would be the story they know and love, this second trailer delves more into uncharted territory. Questions of human values and moral compass are raised as well as a more sinister plot from the wicked stepmother is revealed. Although this iteration looks like it will stick close to the story Disney original told in 1950, there seems to be a few twists added for this generation of moviegoers. Watch the trailer and check out the screenshots after the break.
For anyone hoping that this revitalization of Cinderella will be more than a boy and a girl falling madly in love at first sight, then your wish might be granted. As we can see in this trailer, Cinderella (Lily James) does more than just run into Prince Charming (Richard Madden) she flat out gives him a scolding. And then we have the Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgård) working in cahoots with the wicked stepmother (Cate Blanchett).
These are not instances played out in the 1950’s tale, however I do welcome the given that the animated feature focuses more on Cinderella’s mice friends coming to her aide. There’s actually zero focus on any of her animal friends in this trailer at all. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Cinderella, courtesy of Walt Disney:
The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit. Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Cinderella stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgård, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi, and Helena Bonham Carter. This film will make its way into theaters on March 15, 2015.
