Netflix Streaming Report: The League, Rambo, Time Lapse, Once Upon a Time, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for September 3, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Once Upon a Time, Up in the Air, The League, Area 51, and over 50 more titles new to streaming this September.

up in the air movie

Up in the Air (Jason Reitman) Rated R [109 min] – With a job traveling around the country firing people, Ryan Bingham enjoys his life living out of a suitcase, but finds that lifestyle threatened by the presence of a new hire and a potential love interest. Starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman, and J.K. Simmons

The cast alone is enough to bring a stir to my pants. But if you’re looking for an intellectual drama that hones in on love, life, and existentialism in a hilarious, touching, and poignant way, Up in the Air is one fine piece of cinema. The performances (Anna Kendrick earns her first Oscar nom for her role) and honesty are something missing from a lot of movies these days, and Jason Reitman nails this one out of the ballpark.

the league season 6

The League: The Complete Sixth Season (Jackie Marcus Schaffer and Jeff Schaffer) Semi-scripted comedy about a fantasy football league. Starring Mark Duplass, Nick Kroll, Jonathan Lajoie, Stephen Rannazzisi, Paul Scheer, and Katie Aselton

I’m a big fan of The League, but unfortunately I do not have FXX – who does really? So I’m excited to catch up on one of the silliest and smarter live-action comedies on television.

Time Lapse Movie

Time Lapse (Bradley King) Not Yet Rated [104 min] – Three friends discover a mysterious machine that takes pictures 24hrs into the future and conspire to use it for personal gain, until disturbing and dangerous images begin to develop. Starring Danielle Panabaker, Matt O’Leary, and George Finn

It’s not so much a good movie as it is a great concept that falls flat on its face in the last third of the film. Time Lapse has its perks, but it definitely could have found better direction to come to a more satisfying ending. Good thing it’s on Netflix to check out if you missed it during its festival run.

frozen once upon a time elsa abc

Once Upon a Time: The Complete Fourth Season (Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz) Rated TV-PG [44 min] – Soon after Emma and Hook unwittingly bring Elsa of Arendelle to Storybrooke, they encounter the mysterious Snow Queen, whose relentless obsession with both Emma and Elsa has chilling consequences. Meanwhile, it appears Regina has at last found true love with Robin Hood. But how will she react when her happy ending is thwarted yet again by a maddening twist of fate? Starring  Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Emilie de Ravin, Colin O’Donoghue, Lana Parrilla, Jared Gilmore, Michael Raymond-James, Robert Carlyle, and Georgina Haig

Because we obviously didn’t get enough of Frozen in theaters. Disney had to squeeze every last inch of the animated feature’s popularity out onto their ABC show.

(Watch it now)

Area 51 Movie Oren Peli

Area 51 (Oren Peli) Rated R [91 min] – Three young conspiracy theorists attempt to uncover the mysteries of Area 51, the government’s secret location rumored to have hosted encounters with alien beings. What they find at this hidden facility exposes unimaginable secrets. Starring Reid Warner, Darrin Bragg, Ben Rovner

The long awaited sophomore feature from writer/director Oren Peli finally arrived earlier this year. I have not seen it yet, but I am looking forward to finding out whether this filmmaker delivers on the promise of what appeared to be a unique vision when Paranormal Activity released in 2009.

Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Mad Max: Fury Road, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Vampire Diaries, and more.

Movies on Blu-ray

Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller) Rated R [120 min] – In a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, two rebels just might be able to restore order: Max, a man of action and of few words, and Furiosa, a woman of action who is looking to make it back to her childhood homeland. Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abbey Lee, and Zoë Kravitz [Watch the trailer]

Mad Max: Fury Road is the reason we go to the movie theaters. It is the epitome of brilliant storytelling in the most visually cinematic and compelling way. All of its incredible parts create a most spectacular whole. Fury Road keeps your attention the entire time, and is absolutely relentless in making sure everything that happens on-screen adds something meaningful to the story. It’s a near perfect movie. [Read my full review]

Special features include:

  • Maximum Fury: Filming Fury Road
  • Mad Max: Fury on Four Wheels
  • The Road Warriors: Max and Furiosa
  • The Tools of the Wasteland
  • The Five Wives: So Shiny, So Chrome
  • Fury Road: Crash & Smash
  • Deleted Scenes

The D Train (Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul) [Limited] Rated R [97 min] – The head of a high school reunion committee travels to Los Angeles to track down the most popular guy from his graduating class and convince him to go to the reunion. Starring Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn, and Jeffrey Tambor (Watch the trailer)

I have not had the pleasure of seeing this movie yet. The D Train feels like more of a Netflix pick than anything else. The whole concept is kind of depressing.

Special features include

  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Digital Copy

Television Series

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season (Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec) Rated TV-14 [43 min] – A high school girl is torn between two vampire brothers. Starring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder

For a show called The Vampire Diaries, it’s rather more engaging and thrilling than you’d expect. I wouldn’t put it on the same level as Buffy, but it has it’s quirks that makes it stand on its own to deliver digestible content. Scanning through this season, there are a lot of pivotal moments that lead to Nina Dobrev’s inevitable exit from the show. It’s a well deserved ending with a big cliffhanger, but I’m not sure it is strong enough to keep fans on board after Elena’s departure.

Special features include:

  • The Vampire Diaries: Good Bite and Good Luck
  • The executive producers and cast of The Vampire Diaries say a final farewell to Nina Dobrev, Steven R. McQueen, Marguerite MacIntyre, and Michael Trevino, after six memorable years.
  • The Vampire Diaries: Best.Reaction.Ever.
  • Fan reactions to big moments throughout the season will be curated from Twitter, fan sites and other social media, and pieced together to tell the story of season six via fans’ reactions.
  • Ep.615 Audio Commentary
  • Writer/Director Julie Plec provides commentary on her directorial debut
  • The Vampire Diaries: 2014 Comic-Con Panel
  • Come Visit Georgia PSA
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Second Bite: Gag Reel

The Originals: The Complete Second Season (Julie Plec) Rated TV-14 [45 min] – The Original vampire family, from The Vampire Diaries, return and settle in the city they helped build, New Orleans. Starring Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, and Phoebe Tonkin

You can definitely feel the strain of this series as it tries to live up to its bigger brother, The Vampire Diaries. I can’t say that the characters or story are able to capture my attention as much as Elena and her journey, but The Originals isn’t the worst thing on television. It’s just not something I would want to devote my time to it on a regular basis.

Special features include:

  • The Originals: Always and Forever – In this featurette, we will hear from cast and creators on how season two explored new depths of what it means to be a family.
  • The Awakening Web Series – Explore this companion series on Kol Mikaelson (Nathaniel Buzolic) and his quest to form an alliance with the witches of New Orleans in 1914. Also, go behind the scenes with the cast and creators of the digital series.
  • The Originals: 2014 Comic-Con Panel
  • Come Visit Georgia PSA
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

Texas Rising: The TV Mini-Series (Roland Joffé) Rated TV-PG [450 mins] – Texas Rising tells the story of legendary hero Sam Houston and the Republic of Texas’s intense struggle for independence against the forces of fierce Mexican General Santa Anna. Starring Bill Paxton, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Addai-Robinson, and Olivier Martinez

If you’re a history buff, unlike me, you might find Texas Rising insulting to your intelligence and those historians who truly captured what really happened in 1836. The whole mini-series is over glamorized with spark notes, warped to shape a narrative too simple-minded to take seriously. All the actors do the best with that they’re given and carry on. If the story and dialogue were as pretty as the production and cinematography, Texas Rising may have had a shot at being decent.

Special features include:

  • “Capturing the Revolution: Filming Texas Rising” featurette
  • “Sam Houston: A Man of the Revolution” featurette
  • “General Santa Anna: Leading Mexico” featurette

metal gear solid v the phatom pain

Video Games

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Kojima Productions) [Konami] (Available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC) Taking place nine years after the events of MGSV: Ground Zeroes and the fall of Mother Base, Snake a.k.a. Big Boss, awakes from a nine year coma. The game resumes the story in 1984, with the Cold War still as the backdrop, which continues to shape a global crisis. Snake’s journey takes him into a world where he is driven by a need for revenge and the pursuit of a shadow group, XOF.

Since I didn’t get a review copy and waited patiently for the moment when the Collector’s Edition would become available, I unfortunately haven’t been touched by the critically acclaimed greatness that is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I’ve been a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise ever since I was introduced to Sons of Liberty, MGS2. I had never seen a game like it before. And with the mixture of quirky winks, phenomenal action, and layered storytelling, I was sold instantly. Like any form of entertainment, I try to stay as spoiler free as possible, but from the little gameplay I’ve seen and the trailers, it looks like Hideo Kojima has capped off the series with a masterpiece. I am highly looking forward to this last mission in the Metal Gear universe.

RIP Wes Craven (1939-2015)

Terrible news broke today as prolific horror director/writer Wes Craven has been announced dead after a battle with brain cancer. The famed director of such classic horror titles A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left, and Scream passed away at the age of 76. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report Craven’s untimely death.

Unlike most horror junkies, I never grew up on the Elm Street series, but as a baby of the late 80s I was more familiar with the Scream franchise when they arrived on the scene. I knew of Freddy Krueger in image only and would later binge on all of the Elm Street series as an adult. Craven wrote and directed A Nightmare on Elm Street, which sparked many sequels due to Fredd’s terrifying mainstream appeal – iterations he hand no hand in other than the character himself. Wes only came back to the character for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and New Nightmare. Suffice it to say, Freddy would become Robert Englund’s most recognized role in the actor’s long career of character acting.

The Last House on the Left, Wes Craven’s first feature film, I only saw after having seen the remake; the same for The Hills Have Eyes, which is a phenomenal and disturbing remake in my opinion. And despite never having the pleasure of following his career from the beginning, his influence on the horror films I was brought up on is highly apparent.

Wes Craven’s last film was Scream 4, which set out to revitalize the series for the new generation. It didn’t wind up as celebrated as expected, but now we have an MTV series based on the property that has just been renewed for a second season. I won’t pretend to be a Wes Craven aficionado, there are many titles in his filmography I have yet to digest, but I hope to get to them some day.

When I look back at Wes Craven’s career, what I will miss most is his vision that continually pushed the genre to its limits, changing the fabric of horror storytelling for the better.

Another iconic horror director, John Carpenter (The Thing; Halloween; They Live), conveyed his distress on the loss of his friend and colleague:

Other horror directors, such as James Wan (Saw; The Conjuring), Joe Dante (Gremlins), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Mother’s Day), Tom Holland (1985’s Fright Night), Ti West (The Sacrament; House of the Devil), and Eli Roth (Hostel; The Green Inferno), posted their condolences on their own social media profiles too:

https://twitter.com/Ti_West/status/638195998079107072

https://twitter.com/eliroth/status/638179292233400321

The stars from Wes Craven’s Scream movies also expressed their deepest sympathies:

https://twitter.com/SkeetMe1/status/638170108909608960

If you want to catch up on some of Wes Craven’s film catalog, there are nine titles now available to stream currently on Netflix:

  • The Hills Have Eyes 2 (1984)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
  • Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)
  • Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)
  • Scream (1996)
  • Scream 2 (1997)
  • Music of the Heart (1999)
  • Scream 3 (2000)
  • Cursed (2005)

You will be missed Wes Craven. You were an inspiration that will live on through the annals of horror history.

Box Office Battlefield: We Are Your Friends vs. No Escape

Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. The weekend warriors of August 28, 2015 includes We Are Your Friends, No Escape, and Z is for Zachariah. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others and determine who will be victorious. Should you see ’em, skip ’em, or rent ’em? Find out below!

Last weekend, Straight Outta Compton continued its dominance over the competition, holding its own against three opposing new releases. This weekend the boys from the hood will have to face up against Zac Efron and Owen Wilson. Who will come out on top? Drop that bass! This is the Box Office Battlefield:

We Are Your Friends 2015 Movie Title Logo

We Are Your Friends (Max Joseph) Rated R [96 min] – Caught between a forbidden romance and the expectations of his friends, aspiring DJ Cole Carter attempts to find the path in life that leads to fame and fortune.Starring Zac Efron, Wes Bentley, Emily Ratajkowski, and Jonny Weston

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 42% • Audience – 52%

My Review:

With strange tonal correlations, We Are Your Friends serves as a unique character study in the world of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) comparative to Magic Mike in the realm of male entertainers. I’ve never seen director Max Joseph’s documentaries before, but he has quite the refreshing style for feature films. However, the story is brisk and leans heavily on plot conveniences to move the story along. It wants to be a Soderbergh-esque character drama so badly but doesn’t have the depth to quite reach those heights. And despite its youthful visual flair, the end result isn’t as captivating as the potential it beholds. Ratajkowski is distractingly gorgeous and fairs well opposite more seasoned actors, Bently and Efron, who both do a pretty stand up job. I wish We Are Your Friends didn’t come down to such a simple ending because it wants to be so much more. As far as the music goes, I don’t listen to EDM, but I didn’t mind listening to it in the film and thought it integrated really well. RENT IT!

No Escape 2015 Movie Title Logo

No Escape (John Erick Dowdle) Rated R [103 min] – In their new overseas home, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape in an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed. Starring Lake Bell, Pierce Brosnan, Owen Wilson, Thanawut Kasro

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 41% • Audience – 71%

“The B-movie kicks of scenes like the one in which Jack, with the assistance of some speed ramping, hurls his children across rooftops into his wife’s arms as part of an escape plan, never overcome the rankness of the underlying premise.” – Alison Willmore (Buzzeed)

“I respect No Escape’s attempt at intense, hyper-realism, but that realism tends to be undercut by a bad guy with cheesy scars on his face like The Lion King.” – Vince Mancini (FilmDrunk)

My take:

From what I gather from only seeing the trailer and a few review headlines, No Escape looks like a really silly concept that executes tension and action favorably for us viewers. Something about the tone and the extreme thrill of the situation reminds me of Taken, even down to its ridiculous plot. Didn’t this family research what kind of area they were moving to before heading off to restart their lives? RENT IT!

Z for Zachariah 2015 Movie Title Logo

Z for Zachariah (Craig Zobel) [Limited] Rated PG-13 [95 min] – In the wake of a disaster that wipes out most of civilization, two men and a young woman find themselves in an emotionally charged love triangle as the last known survivors. Starring Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine,

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 80% • Audience – 64%

Their reviews:

“While the film isn’t without a few tonal flaws, the performances — particularly Robbie’s — keep the story grounded in a sublime, post-apocalyptic reality.” – Max Nicholson (IGN Movies)

“This minimalist but deeply affecting morality play slowly tugs you in.” – Jeanette Catsoulis (New York Times)

My take:

Out in very limited release, I’ve been waiting for Z for Zachariah since the buzz out of Sundance. I’m not keen on its loose adaptation of the source material by adding Chris Pine into the mix, but I’m open to accepting the film on its own merits. I think the cast has a lot to offer and I’m excited to check it out once it hits theaters near me. MATINEE IT!

So here we have a weekend with titles consisting of terrorism in a foreign estate and EDM. Such choices for moviegoers to choose from. And last weekend’s films were pretty much DOA. Compton had a fairly strong second weekend, but theaters are so full of different options now that it may not stick it out for a third weekend in a row at the top. Then again, there really is very few good options for audiences to see. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend will be:

Winner: Straight Outta Compton

Netflix Streaming Report: Jiro Dreams of Sushi, White God, Girl Meets World, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for August 27, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with White God, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Girl Meets World, and more. Also, find out what’s leaving in the month of September.

white god movie

White God (Kornél Mundruczó) Rated R [121 min] – Thirteen-year-old Lili fights to protect her dog Hagen. She is devastated when her father eventually sets Hagen free on the streets. Still innocently believing love can conquer any difficulty, Lili sets out to find her dog and save him. Starring Zsófia Psotta, Sándor Zsótér, Lili Horváth, and Szabolcs Thuróczy

Far stronger visually than the message White God is trying to say within the story, but it’s a fascinating watch nonetheless. You’ll never find better dog actors than this.

jiro dreams of sushi

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (David Gelb) Rated PG [81 min] – A documentary on 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, his renowned Tokyo restaurant, and his relationship with his son and eventual heir, Yoshikazu. Starring Jiro Ono, Masuhiro Yamamoto, and Daisuke Nakazama

A beautiful documentary on an aging sushi master. There may not be a strong purpose or direction, however Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a quick, interesting documentary to digest.

girl meets world

Girl Meets World (Michael Jacobs and April Kelly) Rated TV-G [23 min] – More than a decade after “Boy Meets World (1993)”, Cory and Topanga Matthews are married and have two children. Their daughter, Riley, faces life lessons through her family, friends, and school–where her father is her history teacher–as her parents did when they were younger. Starring Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ben Savage

For everyone excited to return to the world of Topanga and Cory, now’s your chance to digest the entire new series in one fell swoop in case you missed it when it aired. I have really nothing to say about this show because I rarely watched Boy Meets World and have no real emotional ties to the series.

byzantium

Byzantium (Neil Jordan) Rated R [118 min] – Residents of a coastal town learn, with deathly consequences, the secret shared by the two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a local resort. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, and Sam Riley

I have yet to see Byzantium, but I always remember seeing it on various lists back when it debuted in 2012. So I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Now Available to Own: The Walking Dead Season 5, Aloha, Citizenfour, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of August 25, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie and television releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are The Walking Dead Season 5, Aloha, Citizenfour, and more.

lego justice league attack of the legion of doom

Movies on Blu-ray

Aloha (Cameron Crowe) Rated PG-13 [104 min] – A celebrated military contractor returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs and re-connects with a long-ago love while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him. Starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, and Alec Baldwin [Watch the Trailer]

This movie is pretty much a waste of effort for everyone involved. Aloha’s message is so muddled in bland storytelling that it ultimately makes vanilla sound more appealing.

Special features included:

  • The Untitled Hawaii Project: The Making of Aloha Feature Length Documentary
  • Cast Gag Reel
  • Original Opening (Blu-ray exclusive)
  • Alternate Ending (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Deleted Scenes (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Four All-New Featurettes (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Photo Gallery (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Audio Commentary by Writer/Director Cameron Crowe (Blu-ray exclusive

LEGO Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! (Rick Morales) Unrated [77 min] – Crime is on the run as the newly formed Justice League keeps Metropolis safe and this makes evil genius Lex Luthor very unhappy. Together with Black Manta, Sinestro and a gang of ruthless recruits, Lex builds his own league and declares them the Legion of Doom. With this super powered team of terror and a plan to attack the top-secret government site, Area 52, can Lex finally be on the verge of victory? Starring Troy Baker, Nolan North, Josh Keaton, Khary Payton, James Arnold Taylor, Grey Griffin, Mark Hamill, and John DiMaggio

For a fun little LEGO movie, Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! is great for the kids and highly tolerable for parents. The voice acting is solid and the action is pretty entertaining. Its only faults is that the story is pretty predictable and the level of animation is straight to home video quality. Otherwise, it’s a decent sit for the short run time.

Special features include:

  • Featurette – “Click, Zap, Boom! Creating the Sound Design” – This fun documentary goes behind the scenes with the talented sound design and foley team to explore how LEGO® sounds are created live on stage and then edited into the final movie.

Where Hope Grows (Chris Dowling) Rated PG-13 [95 min] – A baseball player whose professional career was cut short due to his personal problems is suddenly awakened and invigorated by a young-man with Down syndrome who works at the local grocery store. Starring Kristoffer Polaha, David DeSanctis, and Danica McKellar

I’m not big on spiritual films, but Where Hope Grows is a lot better than some of the other faith-based, spoon fed dribble that’s been out in theaters lately. There is some potential for a good story here, however the third act completely derails the whole movie leaving little hope for redemption.

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • “Casting David DeSanctis” featurette
  • “Stop the R-Word” featurette
  • Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Chris Dowling and Actor David DeSanctis

Two Days, One Night (Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne) Rated PG-13 [95 min] – Sandra, a young Belgian mother, discovers that her workmates have opted for a significant pay bonus, in exchange for her dismissal. She has only one weekend to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses so that she can keep her job. Starring Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Catherine Salée, and Batiste Sornin

I have yet to see this critically lauded film, but if you want to check Two Days, One Night before you buy it, the movie is now available on Netflix streaming.

Special features include:

  • New 2K digital transfer, approved by directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New interviews with the Dardennes and actors Marion Cotillard and Fabrizio Rongione
  • When Léon M.’s Boat Went Down the Meuse for the First Time (1979), a forty-five minute documentary by the Dardennes, featuring a new introduction by the directors
  • New tour of the film’s key locations with the directors
  • Trailer
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Girish Shambu

CitizenFour (Laura Poitras) Rated R [114 min] – A documentarian and a reporter travel to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with Edward Snowden.Starring Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald, and William Binney

I have not had the chance to check this film out yet. It did win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, so there’s that.

Special features include:

  • Bonus Scenes
  • New York Times Talk with Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald, Edward Snowden and David Carr
  • Film Society of Lincoln Center Q&A with Laura Poitras
  • “The Program” – A New York Times Op-Doc by Laura Poitras

the walking dead season 5 glenn

Television Series

The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Season (Scott M. Gimple) Police officer Rick Grimes leads a group of survivors in a world overrun by zombies. Starring Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yuen, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Emily Kinney, and Danai Gurira

The fifth season of The Walking Dead is definitely a transitional one. It starts off on a high-note, but takes a sharp turn that can really make or break fans. When the survivors arrive at their destination in the second half of the season, it’s a real testament to the writers to build such great tension with little action. It’s a great calm before the storm because, as a reader of the comic, Season 6 will be insane.

Special features include:

  • Audio commentaries
  • Inside The Walking Dead
  • The Making of The Walking Dead
  • The Making of Alexandria
  • Beth’s Journey
  • Bob’s Journey
  • Noah’s Journey
  • Tyreese’s Journey
  • A Day in the Life of Michael Cudlitz
  • A Day in the Life of Josh McDermitt
  • Rotters in the Flesh

Criminal Minds: The Complete Tenth Season (Jeff Davis) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – The cases of the BAU, an elite group of profilers who analyze the nation’s most dangerous criminal minds in an effort to anticipate their next moves before they strike again. Starring Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Thomas Gibson

With the inclusion of Jennifer Love Hewitt to spice up the tenth season, Criminal Minds shows signs of wear. I’ve never been a fan of crime procedurals, but I thought I would check this series out to see why the series has been on television for so long. It’s pretty formulaic as most procedurals go and the main stars are holding on by a thread to muster up the energy to continue on with the same old routine.

Special features include:

  • Criminal Minds: Top Ten
  • Easter Egg: “Payback’s An Itch”
  • Origin Story
  • Salute
  • Criminal Minds International
  • Greatest Hits
  • Memo From The Acting Director
  • Quotable Minds
  • H.I.M.: Business As Usual
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

Elementary: The Complete Third Season (Robert Doherty)  Rated TV-14 [60 min]  |  Crime, Drama, MysterySeason 4 PremiereSep 20157.9Your rating:-/10Ratings: 7.9/10 from 61,287 usersReviews: 174 user | 35 criticA modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, with the detective now living in New York City. Starring Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, and Aidan Quinn

Another series I have not had the pleasure of watching, but only this time I jumped at the chance to check it out. I am a big proponent of the other modern take of Sherlock Holmes on the BBC, so I figured I’d see how Elementary took on the subject matter. Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu may not be on the same level of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, however they do have good chemistry, and that’s important for a Holmes-Watson relationship. The gender change is quite an interesting dynamic as well, that brings a different perspective to the dynamic duo. It’s a decent show, and from what I watched of this season it was mostly good.

Special features include:

  • Watson Style
  • Hello Kitty
  • Partners In Crime: Elementary Season 3
  • Deleted Scene
  • Elements Of Deduction
  • Bell on the Scene
  • Gag Reel

The Good Wife: The Complete Sixth Season (Michelle King and Robert King) Rated TV-14 [60 min] – Alicia has been a good wife to her husband, a former state’s attorney. After a very humiliating sex and corruption scandal, he is behind bars. She must now provide for her family and returns to work as a litigator in a law firm. Starring Julianna Margulies, Chris Noth, Matthew Goode, and Josh Charles

Anytime I hear about The Good Wife people won’t shut up about it. So here I am, another series I haven’t gotten on the bandwagon for, and had the opportunity to check out. From what I’ve seen, The Good Wife has some solid tension, but begins to falter halfway through. I have not finished it yet, and hope that it turns itself around. All of the performances are top notch, and I can see why this show continues to earn nominations at the Emmys. I will go back and check out the rest of the episodes starting from Season 1 as soon as I have the time.

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • Follow The Leader: Inside the Season Finale
  • The Temptation Of Alicia Florrick: The Good Wife- Season Six
  • The Esteemed Women of Sunday Nights

Revenge: The Complete Fourth and Final Season (Mike Kelley) Rated TV-PG [44 min] – An emotionally troubled young woman makes it her mission to exact revenge against the people who wronged her father. Starring Madeleine Stowe, Emily VanCamp, and Gabriel Mann

Not a series I have seen nor had the chance to review, but from what I’ve heard it’s OK.

Special features include:

  • Bloopers
  • Deleted Scenes

The Mindy Project: The Complete Third Season (Mindy Kaling) Rated TV-14 [30 min] – A young Ob/Gyn doctor balances her personal and professional life, surrounded by quirky co-workers in a small office. Starring Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina, and Ike Barinholtz

Sadly, I have not see this show or had the opportunity to review it. I’ve heard that this season kind of meanders and is beginning to show a lack of creativity and wit. Not good when you have a hit comedy on your hands.

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

Box Office Battlefield: American Ultra, Sinister 2, and Hitman: Agent 47

Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. The weekend warriors of August 21, 2015 includes American Ultra, Sinister 2, and Hitman: Agent 47, along with a batch of limited releases. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others and determine who will be victorious. Should you see ’em, skip ’em, or rent ’em? Find out below!

Last weekend, Straight Outta Compton brought gangster rap back into the forefront of the pop culture conversation. Its debut earned a lot of attention and is quite the reigning champ to dethrone. With three wide releases vying for the top spot, can the boys from NWA keep rolling on their high? This is the Box Office Battlefield:

American Ultra Movie Title Logo

American Ultra (Nima Nourizadeh) Rated R [95 min] – A stoner – who is in fact a government agent – is marked as a liability and targeted for extermination. But he’s too well-trained and too high for them to handle. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Connie Britton, Topher Grace and John Leguizamo

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 47% • Audience – 56%

My Review:

Ultimately, American Ultra will be a weird throwaway film at the end of the day that no one will remember. It has a solid concept that both Eisenberg and Stewart execute well with great chemistry, but there’s hardly anything memorable about the film. It’s mostly boring, all of the other characters involved are asinine aside from Britton, and the Topher Grace is the most horribly cartoonish villain I’ve seen in a long time. The action is engaging and fun, and the relationship between Eisenberg and Stewart has a refreshing dynamic, but American Ultra doesn’t quite work as well as it thinks it does. NETFLIX IT!

Sinster 2 Movie Title Logo

Sinister 2 (Ciarán Foy) Rated R [97 min] – A young mother and her twin sons move into a rural house that’s marked for death. Starring James Ransone, Shannyn Sossamon, Robert Daniel Sloan, and Dartanian Sloan

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 12% • Audience – 37%

My review:

To be completely honest, I kept nodding off and took a few power naps while watching this film. I would say I digested at least 85% of the film, and from what I saw it wasn’t hard to guess where the movie was going or how it would end. Sinister 2 is boring. The characters are underwritten, their motivations and personalities are terribly weak. Being a sequel, I expected the home movies to be far more creative and disturbing, but they were really subpar and hardly imaginative. Sinister 2 continues the odd tonal balance of humor and horror that kept me from liking the original, which didn’t need a sequel to begin with. The first 15 seconds of the first film is all you need to see. SKIP IT!

Hitman Agent 47 Movie Title Logo

Hitman: Agent 47 (Aleksander Bach) Rated R [96 min] – An assassin teams up with a woman to help her find her father and uncover the mysteries of her ancestry. Starring Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware, Zachary Quinto, and Ciarán Hinds

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 8% • Audience – 52%

Their reviews:

“Comes to life during the action scenes, if only slightly.” – Scott Weinberg (Nerdist)

“Hitman: Agent 47 is a second missed opportunity to translate one of the more adaptable video games into a satisfying movie experience.” – Kofi Outlaw (ScreenRant)

My take:

I picture a goblin named Franklin held captive in a cage at 20th Century Fox that the execs call on for when nothing original has sparked their interest. And Franklin has been beaten down so much, it mustered up its last bit of energy to softly whisper the idea of a Hitman sequel before his untimely demise. Because honestly, who asked for a Hitman sequel? There aren’t even enough gamers in the world who keep up with the series to even justify the creation of another flop of a movie. The action may be choreographed by the folks who helped on John Wick, but that looks like all Hitman: Agent 47 has going for it. Coming from screenwriter Skip Woods, who brought us X-Men: Origins – Wolverine, I expect a similar outcome. RIP Franklin. SKIP IT!

Grandma 2015 Movie Title Logo

Grandma (Paul Weitz) [Limited] Rated R [79 min] – Self-described misanthrope Elle Reid has her protective bubble burst when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage, shows up needing help. The two of them go on a day-long journey that causes Elle to come to terms with her past and Sage to confront her future. Starring Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden, and Judy Greer

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 93% • Audience – 80%

Their reviews:

“This is Tomlin’s first leading role in a film in 27 years, and even though she is sharing the screen with multiple generations of fine actors, nearly every moment in this movie is all hers.” – Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times)

“Weitz strips everything down for efficiency in “Grandma.” The writing is relentlessly on point, and often lacks breathing room, but some films settle for being workable showcases for their interpreters.” – Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune)

My take:

Grandma looks like a quirky romp of a film that wants to be hip and cool, but checks off all the indie tropes you could possibly imagine. Critics have positively lauded this film, and I’ll give it a chance, but there isn’t anything within the trailer that stands out to me as something fresh or original. RENT IT!

6 Years Movie Title Logo

6 Years (Hannah Fidell) [Limited] Unrated [85 min] – A young couple bound by a seemingly ideal love, begins to unravel as unexpected opportunities spin them down a volatile and violent path and threaten the future they had always imagined. Starring Taissa Farmiga, Ben Rosenfield, Lindsay Burdge, and Joshua Leonard

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 50% • Audience – 38%

Their reviews:

“[The two leads’] heartbreaking performances imbue this familiar Austin-set narrative with a fiery edge.” – Eric Kohn (indieWIRE)

“[6 Years] too often veers toward melodramatic overstatement, inspiring little empathy or understanding despite the committed performances of promising young leads Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield.” – Justin Chang (Variety)

My take:

While watching the trailer for 6 Years I felt a few similarities to Like Crazy. I like that film to a certain extent, but it didn’t have a strong voice or opinion to get behind. And when the credits roll, you’re sitting there in a melancholy state feeling empty. I have an itch that’s telling me this is how 6 Years will end up making me feel. NETFLIX IT!

Digging For Fire Movie Title Logo

Digging for Fire (Joe Swanberg) [Limited] Rated R [85 min] – The discovery of a bone and a gun send a husband and wife on separate adventures over the course of a weekend. Starring Jake Johnson, Rosemarie DeWitt, Orlando Bloom, Anna Kendrick, Jenny Slate, and Brie Larson

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 67% • Audience – 52%

Their reviews:

“A happy couple’s submerged tensions come to the surface in Joe Swanberg’s tender, wildly imaginative comic drama.” – Richard Brody (The New Yorker)

“With all the pretty, vapid Los Angeles navel-gazers lounging by swimming pools and engaging in pointless (and seemingly endless) conversations, the results feel like a sub-par Henry Jaglom movie, conceived on the quick after a location became available.” – Alonso Duralde (TheWrap)

My take:

Swanberg has been on a hot streak for me lately, from the works I have seen. Drinking Buddies and Happy Christmas I quite enjoyed – I haven’t seen 24 Exposures – but Digging for Fire seems a little more aimless than his typical mumblecore films. It has a stellar cast that I’d love to see in this kind of setting, but again DFF it looks a little too loose to keep my attention. And from those who have seen it seem to be a bit iffy. NETFLIX IT!

She's Funny that Way Movie Title Logo

She’s Funny That Way (Peter Bogdanovich) [Limited] Rated R [93 min] – On the set of a playwright’s new project, a love triangle forms between his wife, her ex-lover, and the call girl-turned-actress cast in the production. Starring Imogen Poots, Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston, and Kathryn Hahn

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 38% • Audience – 40%

Their reviews:

“Broad, occasionally clunky, sometimes funny, scattered with poignant grace notes, and, in its own peculiar way, endearing.” – Ignatiy Vishnevetsky (AV Club)

“Even the cinematography is ill-advised, since it’s literally off-color; warm tones meant to evoke romantic feelings come off as a jaundiced homage to Woody Allen, from whom many of this film’s tropes have been not-so-piquantly purloined.” – Joe Morgenstern (Wall Street Journal)

My take:

I’m not the biggest fan when it comes to interconnected stories, but when executed well the tool can really heighten the experience and enjoyment of a film. She’s Funny That Way looks like it is trying too hard. Everything in the trailer looks uncomfortably forced and as if the actors are just phoning this one in for the paycheck. SKIP IT!

Learning to Drive Movie Title Logo

Learning to Drive (Isabel Coixet) [Limited] Rated R [90 min] – As her marriage dissolves, a Manhattan writer takes driving lessons from a Sikh instructor with marriage troubles of his own. In each other’s company they find the courage to get back on the road and the strength to take the wheel. Starring Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kingsley, Grace Gummer, and Samantha Bee

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics –64% • Audience – 64%

Their reviews:

“Learning to Drive is a richly observed, crosscultural character study that coasts along pleasurably on the strengths of its virtuoso leads.” – Michael Rechtshaffen (Los Angeles Time)

“The film seems to take its method entirely from Darwan’s quiet, methodical patter about how to move safely across lanes and through intersections. It’s good advice for driving, but less helpful for drama.” – Mark Jenkins (NPR)

My take:

I think Learning to Drive looks like a paint by numbers Oscar film that would have been recognized as an indie darling 30 years ago. NETFLIX IT!

Some Kind of Beautiful Movie Title Logo

Some Kind Of Beautiful (Tom Vaughan) [Limited] Rated R [100 min] – A drama about a Cambridge poetry professor who begins to re-evaluate his life of Byronic excess. Starring Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba, and Malcolm McDowell

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 0% • Audience – 39%

Their reviews:

“The problem, however, is that the script by Matthew Newman doesn’t do enough to make [Richard] either lovable or reprehensible.” Chris Knight (National Post)

“Hayek swings for the fences, but none of the gags she’s tasked with delivering are funny, not even when she desperately pantomimes various breathless expressions men make when they orgasm.” – Simon Abrams (Village Voice)

My take:

LOL

The three new options this weekend are so niche and poorly reviewed that I would find it hard to believe that anyone is going to go see them. They each have such a small targeted demographic that movie goers will be spread out all over the place this weekend. Straight Outta Compton had such rave reviews and positive word of mouth that it makes a strong case to keep its competition at bay. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend will be:

Winner: Straight Outta Compton

Netflix Streaming Report: Pariah, Alex of Venice, If I Stay, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for August 20, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Pariah, Alex of Venice, If I Stay, and more.

if i stay chloe moretz

If I Stay (R.J. Cutler) Rated PG-13 [106 min] – Life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined.Chloë Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Jamie Blackley, and Joshua Leonard

I haven’t seen If I Stay, but the trailer made the film look hilariously predictable and overly contrived.

alex of venice mary elizabeth winstead

Alex of Venice (Chris Messina) Rated R [86 min] – A workaholic attorney is forced to reinvent her life after her husband suddenly leaves. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Messina, Don Johnson, and Derek Luke

Netflix is a magical place that allows us to see films that we don’t have the time or convenience to when they hit theaters, such as this small indie darling Alex of Venice. I had read mostly positive headlines, and so I look forward to checking it out.

seeking a friend for the end of the world

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (Lorene Scafaria) Rated R [101 min] – As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan. Starring Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, and Melanie Lynskey

There isn’t too much that stuck with me about Seeking a Friend. It has an awkward imbalance of quirky indie and poignant drama. It’s an extreme of either or with this movie, which makes it a frustrating yet interesting sit.

pariah Movie

Pariah (2011) (Dee Rees) Rated R [86 min] – A Brooklyn teenager juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression. Starring Adepero Oduye, Kim Wayans, and Aasha Davis

This movie has been on my to-do list for quite some time. I’ve heard really great things about Pariah, and it’s been on many critics’ “best of” lists, so I think I’ll give it a gander now that it’s available on Netflix streaming.
