As soon as the credits had ended in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 rendition of Star Trek there was only one thing on my mind: more. From the choice casting to the overall production and direction, my expectations for Star Trek Into Darkness have been stacked very high thanks to the reboot. Watch the one-minute announcement teaser after the break.
Now the villain has yet to be announced, but all signs and rumors have been pointing fingers at Khan, who was played by Ricardo Montalban in the original series and of course the second film, The Wrath of Khan. Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse; Atonement; Four Lions) is the man in question here who may be our new Khan as he is seen throughout the trailer as a force not to be trifled with. (Click on any of the images below to enlarge.)
There are a lot of quick cuts, lens flares, and destruction to keep your interest level at an all time high. There are no witty remarks or catchy dialogue this time around, just a tension filled monologue delivered by Cumberbatch who uses a very unnerving tone. Check it out below:
My only problem with the announcement teaser for Star Trek Into Darkness, did they show too much? Abrams has always been one to keep things pretty close to the chest, but certain points in this trailer make me question his motives. But I will keep an open mind and believe that he is just messing with my mind. Mint!
Surprisingly enough, the duo behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, have written both Star Trekand Star Trek Into Darkness. As much as I hate thinking about the title of this sequel, I can’t help but wonder if Orci and Kurtzman purposefully tried to recreate The Wrath of Khan or if this is a completely different idea.
If you watch the Japanese subtitled announcement teaser you’ll find about 14 extra seconds of footage that has a very distinct reference to The Wrath of Khan. [SPOILER] If that’s so, we may see one of our heroes bite the dust in the end. I’m going to wager a bet that it is Kirk and not Spock. [END SPOILER]
The plot synopsis of Star Trek Into Darkness can be found via Apple Trailers:
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
The announcement teaser fulfills my appetite, but I want the main course already! Also, where was Chekov?
I really dig the poster and I feel like it relates effectively to the synopsis of the film. But who is the villain goshdarnit!
This trailer shown here is only an announcement teaser that’s leading up to an official announcement trailer on December 17. We’ll see you then!
Star Trek Into Darkness takes off into theaters May 17, 2013.
