Konami Announces ‘Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection’ PS3 Exclusive

Metal Gear Solid The Legacy Collection PS3

It would appear that certain publishers in the video game industry are finally catching up with Hollywood when it comes to re-packaging games. What first started off as re-releasing old games in HD for current generation systems, it now seems as though box sets will become more frequent as the gaming industry grows. Konami announced today that they would be releasing all of Hideo Kojima’s brilliant work in a massive PS3 exclusive, Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection. See more details and contents after the break.

Konami is taking a page right out of Warner Bros. playbook. Just like the Harry Potter franchise received a new box set after each movie was release until one massive ultimate collection was developed, Metal Gear Solid looks to follow suit. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PlayStation 3 released in the summer of last year, which included Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD.

Continuing the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear Solid Franchise, this June, fans will receive the opportunity to purchase a bigger, better box set with every game. The Legacy Collection includes: MGS, MGS: VR Missions, MGS 2: HD Edition, MGS 3: HD Edition, MGS: Peace Walker: HD Edition, and MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots Trophy Edition. In addition the collection will also include two Ashley Wood digital graphic novels.

President of Konami, Tomoyuki Tsuboi, had this to say:

“We wanted to give Metal Gear Solid fans the opportunity to experience the series from beginning to end, all on one console. With the collection’s multiple titles, players can truly see how Metal Gear Solid evolved into the critically acclaimed and beloved franchise it is today.”

It will be interesting to see if fans will hold out for an ULTIMATE box set when Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain release. I would love the chance to have every game up to MGS 5 and play them in chronological order.

Game collections in a single unit are not entirely uncommon. There is the God of War Saga and Assassin’s Creed Ezio Trilogy. Nintendo did the same thing with Super Mario Bros. All-Stars for the Super Nintendo way back in the day.

What franchise would you like to see get an HD box set? I can think of a few franchises such as Tomb Raider, Donkey Kong, Resident Evil, or even Mega Man.
