Making their way on stage during Marvel Studio’s presentation at D23 Expo this morning, stars Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, and Anthony Hopkins made themselves available to present a clip from Thor: The Dark World. What was shown, that hasn’t made its way online yet, depicts the first meeting of Jane Foster and Odin, protector of the Nine Realms. Suffice it to say their first encounter does not go as swimmingly as Thor would hope. Read our clip description after the break; spoiler warning of course.
INT. Jane is lying on a table from what appears to be on Asgard. There’s a bunch of orange glow-y lights floating above hear as the Asgardian doctors try to assess her symptoms. “She will not survive the amount of energy surging within her,” Thor (Chris Hemswroth) exclaims. What could this energy be? Why is it inside of her? Did Thor impregnate her with his alien seed?
Being the curious scientist that she is, she questions whether she is being analyzed by a quantum generation field. The doctor corrects her in saying that it’s a soul forge, where Ms. Foster responds, “Does a soul forge transfer molecular energy from one place to another?” Taken aback by Jane’s knowledge, the doctor replies, “yes.” Regardless, they can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with Jane.
Pooping on the party, Odin takes the time to get off his throne to meet Jane in the most unwelcoming fashion, comparing her to a goat at a dinner table. Snapping back, she asks, “who do you think you are?” getting an answer she didn’t quite expect. On the contrary, Odin knows who Jane is. Humbly she says to Thor, “You told your dad about me?”
Unimpressed like Mckayla Maroney at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Odin signals the guards to take her back to Earth. Whilst grabbing Jane, a surprising burst of red energy deflects the would-be Asgardian bouncers away from her. Odin discovers something in her arm and assumes that it is some kind infection that is defending her.
This scene thoroughly exhibits the nerdiness that is Marvel Comics while infusing lighthearted humor for all to enjoy. Based on what was shown in the latest trailer for Thor: The Dark World released earlier this week, I assume that the red energy is coming from that floating red goo Jane encounters. I like the combination of grounded science and Marvel fantasy, and the colliding of worlds that Thor brings to the Marvel Cinematic Universe only opens the floodgates to even more possibilities.
