WonderCon 2014: Details on Dragons and Villains from ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Movie Trailer Toothless Crushing Hiccup

This summer, How to Train Your Dragon 2 will take flight on June 13, and director Dean Deblois and actor Jay Baruchel (Hiccup) were kind enough to visit WonderCon 2014 to give a little more insight on the project. After the break, learn what director Deblois and Baruchel had to say about new dragons, the mysterious new villain, and setting up for a third How to Train Your Dragon.

Earlier this month the final trailer How to Train Your Dragon 2 was released. It is easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Although we were given slightly more to digest, the marketing hasn’t dealt all of their cards yet. Unfortunately, the marketing team spoiled who Valka (Cate Blanchett) is – I won’t even get into that, but Dean and Jay admit disappointment in that decision – but they haven’t really given much depth as to how she plays a factor against the other new characters we’ll see in the film:

“The scope gets really big in this movie, and what Hiccup discovers while he’s out mapping the world is that there is a brewing conflict; that conflict being insighted by the very ambitious conqueror who’s looking to build a dragon army – and he’s played by Djimon Hounsou, his name is Drago Bludvist. Drago Bludvist emplyos dragon trappers; one of the best dragon trappers, the self-declared great dragon trapper of all is Eret, son of Eret, played by Kit Harrington, is a guy with misplaced loyalty, and we pan him out throughout the movie. Valka is waging a one women war against Drago’s ambitions by actually rescuing those dragons and whisking them away back to her sanctuary where she mends them back to health.”

And speaking of dragons. During the press conference I asked Dean what kind of new dragons we could expect to see in the upcoming film. Some have been shown in the trailers, but Dean states that there will be roughly the same amount of new, featured dragons as there were in the first film:

“We definitely have a group of dragons designed to fill the spaces because Valka has a dragon sanctuary filled with dragons she’s rescued. We’ve actually come up with a modular system where we compare different heads with different bodies, wings, and tails to come up with endless varieties that way; so they are the background in that sense that creates the thousands of new dragons. But featured there are, probably, I think about the same amount of new dragons that have hero moments that are really well rigged and really well thought out that are hopefully as every bit surprising as the other ones, if not more so.”

As the universe expands, the How to Train Your Dragon is building quite a world for itself. Despite there being a television series, Defenders of Berk, which will not impact the events of the sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2 takes place about five years after the events of the first film. And since Defenders of Berk just finished its second season, Dean’s vision is to have the third season of the show piggyback off of HTTYD 2, if it proves to be a smash hit, leading up to a third movie.
