As foretold by Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) as he hijacked one of The Capitol’s propos, the Mockingjay lives. The first official teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has finally arrived. Up until now, we haven’t seen Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) within any of the viral marketing. Now not only do we get our first glimpse of the girl who lived on fire, but after the break we cover seven very important points seen within trailer that you should pay attention to.
Pretty cool right? This was the teaser that was shown during Comic-Con. It has a similar tone to the first teaser trailer for Catching Fire, with Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) discussing his intentions for Katniss. The only difference is that this time he is speaking to President Coin (Julianne Moore) instead of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). This teaser doesn’t reveal too much, and frankly, non-book readers may be a bit lost without context. But here are seven little nuggets of non-spoilery information about Mockingjay – Part 1 that should catch your interest:
1. Beetee Has a Wheel Chair
We did not see Beetee at the end of Catching Fire, all we knew was that he was down for the count inside the arena and was picked up by Plutarch and Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) in their hoverplane when they saved Katniss from the arena.
2. War Has Begun
The games are over. War has begun. The Capitol no longer has control of its country. The only reason why Lionsgate is choosing to stick with “The Hunger Games” within the film’s title is for franchise recognition. As you can tell in the trailer, Panem citizens are being gunned down left and right while others attempt to stand and fight the oppression of The Capitol.
3. District 13 Refugees
The filmmakers have tactically opted out from providing any information about District 13 aside from a few off-handed comments. It was only briefly glossed over at the end of Catching Fire, but Katniss and the survivors of District 12 are now in District 13. They will more than likely discuss how District 13 is still fully operational in the upcoming film.
4. First Look at Katniss Arrows
If you look closely at Katniss’ quiver, you’ll see different colored vials on each arrow quill. These arrows were custom-made by Beetee specifically for Katniss’ mockingjay costume. She holds the power of regular, incendiary, and explosive arrows. As you might expect, they will come in handy for this war.
5. Natalie Dormer is a Badass
You’ve wondered why Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), who plays Cressida in the movie, has been rocking a buzz cut on the side of her head lately. This is why. Her evolution into a badass post-apocalytpic rebel only makes me adore her more.
6. Plutarch and Coin’s Game of Chess
Seen at the beginning are Plutarch and Coin, discussing the fate of Katniss and how she should be used in this war. It’s all a game to them with Katniss. She’s a pawn once more. People be scheming.
7. Katniss Accepting Her Fate as a Symbol
The continuous reappearance of the mockingjay symbol is no coincidence. Ever since folks spotted it on Katniss in the 74th Annual Hunger Games, it has become a beacon of hope throughout Panem. Despite her best efforts to avoid war, she has now accepted the fact that she is the glimmer of hope for this rebellion as The Mockingjay.
