Epic Purchase: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4.24 Billion

marvel_comics_1

WHAT??!?!?!?! Disney has just purchased Marvel Entertainment Inc. for a sum $4 billion dollars. This is just ridiculous. The closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, their stock was $50 each, which will be distrtibuted to Marvel for their company that accumulates to the $4 billion.

According to Walt Disney Company:

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel’s properties.

From Superhero Hype:

UPDATE #1: In a conference call, the companies said that the deals for movies for characters at other studios (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and the other studios.

UPDATE #2: John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got “pretty excited, pretty fast.” They say there’s definitely an opportunity there.

UPDATE #3: The deal with Paramount Pictures to distribute “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers” stays in place as well, but Disney would like to self-distribute down the line. “When the time comes we’ll take a closer look at it.” It was actually stated that the deal still included five films, so that is one more film after “The Avengers.”

Documentary: Art & Copy ~ Official Trailer

Opening in limited theaters on August 21st. Directed by Doug Pray, Art & Copy reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry

Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in the film were responsible for “Just Do It,” “I Love NY,” “Where’s the Beef?,” “Got Milk,” “Think Different,” and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them.

Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.

Annual Saw Blood Drive For Saw VI

With a new Saw film coming out comes another blood drive for the Red Cross. Their slogan, “Give ‘Til it Hurts.” The annual Saw Nurse is in full fashion as she shows off her amazing syringe dress. Saw VI comes to theaters October 23.

This years ad campaign was created by Ignition Print and was photographed by Co-President of Marketing Tim Palen… and it’s the wildest yet with the SAW nurse sporting a uniform you wont see at just any old doctors office. Thats because its designed by the downtown NY fashion darlings The Blonds, the corset kings who have outfitted the likes of Beyonce, Katy Perry and Rihanna.

Windy City Riot 2009 Results

Skating

The Windy City Riot is one of the longest running street contests in rollerblading, and one of the few street contests even happening these days. The Riot is a staple in the Chicago scene, and has a strong core group of skaters that have helped keep this competition at the level its at. It seems every year the Riot brings a random batch of rollerblading A-Listers, and usually whichever one of them is wearing a pair of TRS takes the trophy. But finally this year the curse was broken when Steve Lerner (Palos Hills) destroyed every spot with his smooth, effortless skating, and switch/natural repertoire of tricks.

Thanks to Collin Martin and Juan Herrera for putting the event on again this year, and to everyone who came out and continues to do so year after year.

Wal-Mart Likes Destroying Little Girls Spirits

walmart

According to an AdAge article, Wal-Mart has concocted a Thin Mint and Tagalong rip-off cookie. Those once loveable cookies are no longer sacred and exclusive to the Girl Scouts of America.

“Just when you think your opinion about Walmart might be changing … just when you think that maybe, just maybe, Walmart was learning to be a better citizen … Walmart turns around and does something really despicable,” Ms. Harquail writes. “It’s not discriminating against women, strong-arming suppliers, polluting neighborhoods or racing to the bottom of the China Price. No, this time, it’s closer to home, and in my case, really close to home. This time … Walmart is knocking off the Girl Scouts.”

Mrs. Harquail was the “cookies mom” for her own daughter’s scout troop. She easily recognized the distinct flavor of those knock-off brand cookies immediately.

“The exclusivity of Girl Scout cookies is what makes the cookies really sell,” Ms. Harquail writes. “But now, Walmart is shoving itself in front of these little girls, and knocking on your door to sell you their almost-as-good fake Thin Mints and fake Tagalongs, whenever you want them.”

Does Wal-Mart have no soul? Knocking down the little girls is what they are doing. But nothing says Wal-Mart can’t do this, but is this ethical? I myself don’t really eat the cookies to begin with, but thinking about those sad little girls who can’t sell those cookies because Wal-Mart has them for cheaper and anytime you want is saddening. Do you think Wal-Mart is immoral?
