get hard movie will ferrell kevin hart

Movies on Blu-ray

Get Hard (Etan Cohen) Rated R [100 min] – When millionaire James King is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars. Starring Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart, Alison Brie, and T.I.

I expected the worst, but walked away mildly enjoying the antics between Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. There are good intentions, but it’s hard not to look past its racist tendencies. The duo work well together, but for 100 min, Get Hard feels a lot longer than the substance the film provides. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Unrated Cut of the Film
  • Just Put Your Lips Together and Blow
  • Get Hard Line-O-Ramas
  • The Kevin Hart Workout
  • Face Off with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart
  • Ferrell Fighting
  • A Date with John Mayer
  • Twerking 101
  • Will Ferrell, Gangsta
  • Inmates: Out of Control
  • Bikers, Babes and Big Bangs
  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted Scenes

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (David Zellner) Unrated [105 min] – A jaded Japanese woman discovers a hidden copy of Fargo (1996) on VHS, believing it to be a treasure map indicating the location of a large case of money. Starring Rinko Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Katsube, Shirley Venard, and David Zellner

When I saw the film in theaters I had a hard time concentrating on the film because a bunch of old people wouldn’t shut their yaps throughout. From what I could keep my attention on, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is a very sweet and hilariously dark comedy filled with existentialism. Kikuchi’s performance is captivating and poignant, while the rest of the cast demonstrate a perfect balance. Team Bunzo! RENT IT!

  • Audio commentary with the Zellner Brothers and producer Chris Ohlson
  • Deleted and alternate scenes

While We’re Young (Noah Baumbach) Rated R [97 min] – A middle-aged couple’s career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives. Starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, and Amanda Seyfried

If you’re like me and despise hipster culture, While We’re Young may be difficult to stomach. But all the while the movie allows for a handful of good laughs at their expense. Baumbach attempts for a real calculating story that delivers a punch in the face the viewer and the characters may not see coming. Look at all of his work, I may have enjoyed While We’re Young the most, but still not my kind of film. It may float your boat though. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Six Behind-the-Scenes Vignettes:
    • “The Cast”
    • “Working with Filmmaker Noah Baumbach”
    • “Generation Tech”
    • “Working with Charles Grodin”
    • “Ayahuasca Ceremony”
    • “Hip-Hop Class”

Last Knights (Kazuaki Kiriya) Rated R [115 min] – A fallen warrior rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge his dishonored master. Starring Clive Owen, Morgan Freeman, and Aksel Hennie

For what it’s worth, Last Knight could have been a lot worse. Overly convoluted and plagued with uninteresting characters, Kazuaki Kiriya presents a very bland piece of cinema. Sadly not even the cast can keep the ship afloat. Morgan Freeman’s strange beard thing may be the most interesting thing about the whole movie. SKIP IT!

Special features include:

  •  “Behind the Scenes of Last Knights” featurette
  • “A Look at the Special Effects of Last Knights” featurette
  • Cast and Crew Interviews

The Gunman (Pierre Morel) Rated R [115 min] – A sniper on a mercenary assassination team, kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier’s successful kill shot forces him into hiding. Returning to the Congo years later, he becomes the target of a hit squad himself. Starring Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Jasmine Trinca, and Javier Bardem

I did not get the chance to see this film in theaters or via a screener. I have not heard any good things about the film either.

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of June 23, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Batman: Arkham Knight, Workaholics (Season 5), Song One, and more.

Movies on Blu-ray

The Forger (Philip Martin) Rated R [92 min] – A thief works with his father and son to forge a painting by Monet and steal the original. Together, they plan the heist of their lives. Starring John Travolta, Christopher Plummer, and Tye Sheridan

If ever there was a movie where a once famous actor showed signs of wear it would have to be The Forger. Not only does Travolta look tired, but so does his hairpiece. The Forger is wrought with too many subplots that don’t earn their keep and there is very little substance to grab hold of to keep you invested in the characters. SKIP IT!

Special features include:

  • Identifying The Forger: Creating Character and Conflict” featurette

Song One (Kate Barker-Froyland) Rated PG-13 [86 min] – A young woman strikes up a relationship with her ailing brother’s favorite musician. Starring Anne Hathaway, Johnny Flynn, and Mary Steenburgen

Releasing Blu-rays on a limited release must be a new practice because Song One is now available via wide release. The movie lacks depth that the actors, who all do a fairly stand up job, can’t compensate for. There’s little imagination in the film’s storytelling that keeps you one step ahead at all times. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX!

Special features include:

  • Behind-the-scenes recording of the soundtrack
  • Deleted scenes

’71 (Yann Demange) [DVD Only] Rated R [99 min] – A young and disoriented British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the deadly streets of Belfast in 1971.Starring Jack O’Connell, Sam Reid, and Sean Harris

Unfortunately I did not have the chance to catch this film, but I’ve heard it was OK and Jack O’Connell puts in a good performance.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary with Director Yann Demange, Producer Angus Lamont & Writer Gregory Burke

workaholics season 5

Television Releases

Workaholics: The Complete Fifth Season (Blake Anderson, Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, Kyle Newacheck, Connor Pritchard, and Dominic Russo) Adam DeMamp, Blake Chesterfield Henderson, and Ders Torpin Holmvik return for another season of misguided schemes and non-stop partying. From schooling the competition in 80s trivia to crashing a DeMamp family funeral, these guys are fending off adulthood in style. Starring Blake Anderson, Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, Maribeth Monroe

I’m partially through the fifth season of Workaholics and still enjoy the wacky hijinks these three delinquents get themselves into. However, I wish that the creators would break away from the formula or at least change things up to give Adam, Blake, and Anders a little more drive or purpose to bring a little more depth. Other than that, this show continues to be hilarious and pretty witty. BUY IT IF YOU LIKE THIS SERIES! OTHERWISE WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX!

Special features included are:

  • Bloopers
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Uncensored Trailer
  • Behind the Scenes of the Trailer
  • #FreeTheButtCheeks
  • And More!

batman: arkham knight batmobile

Video Game Releases

Batman: Arkham Knight [Rocksteady Studios] (Warner Bros. Games Interactive) [Available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC] In the explosive finale to the Arkham series, Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy The Dark Knight forever. Batman: Arkham Knight introduces Rocksteady’s uniquely designed version of the Batmobile, which is drivable for the first time in the franchise. The addition of this legendary vehicle, combined with the acclaimed gameplay of the Batman Arkham series, offers gamers the ultimate and complete Batman experience as they tear through the streets and soar across the skyline of the entirety of Gotham City. Be The Batman.

I am picking up my copy tomorrow. I’m very excited about it. Ever since I saw some gameplay that debuted at Comic-Con last year with the Batmobile I knew this would revolutionize the franchise. Sadly, this is the final installment in Rocksteady’s Arkham series, but I’m sure Warner Bros. Interactive won’t let something this big go. From review headlines, it seems as though this is another strong title for the Batman, but the game is a bit too dependent on utilizing its new toys and the Batmobile. I look forward to whatever this next adventure brings me.

Now Available to Own: Spirited Away, Chappie, Run All Night, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of June 16, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Spirited Away, Chappie, Run All Night, and more.

Spirited Away Blu-Ray

Movies on Blu-ray

Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki) Rated PG [125 mins] – Spirited Away is a wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call on the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world. Starring Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Jason Marsden, Susan Egan, David Ogden Stiers, Lauren Holly, Michael Chiklis, John Ratzenberger, Tara Strong, and Bob Bergen

My thoughts: This movie is everything. I believe Spirited Away is my first, and definitely my favorite of his catalog. Your first Ghibli movie is typically always the one that sticks with you. BUY THIS NOW!

Special features include:

  • Introduction by John Lasseter
  • The Art of Spirited Away
  • Behind The Microphone
  • Original Japanese Storyboards
  • Nippon Television Special
  • Original Japanese Trailers
  • TV Spots

Chappie (Neill Blomkamp) Rated R [120 min] – In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. Starring Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er

My thoughts: I liked Chappie a lot more than the hive mind. From what was attempted, I got a lot more out of what they were trying to do and really appreciated the story they wanted to tell. Sure there are things they could have improved upon, but I thought it was a very unique film. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Alternate Ending
  • Extended Scene: “A Very Bad Man
  • Eight Featurettes
  • We Are Tetravaal” featurette (Blu-ray and DVD exclusive featurette)

Run All Night (Jaume Collet-Serra) Rated R [114 min] – Mobster and hit man Jimmy Conlon has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie: with his estranged son, Mike, whose life is in danger, or his longtime best friend, mob boss Shawn Maguire, who wants Mike to pay for the death of his own son. Starring Liam Neeson, Ed Harris, Joel Kinnaman, and Vincent D’Onofrio

My thoughts: I was pleasantly surprised from what looked like your traditional Liam Neeson action flick. The plot is pretty standard, but the pacing is quick and the action is raw. The ending definitely is very detached and feels like they were out of ideas in how to tie it all up, but Run All Night exceeds my expectations. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Shoot All Night – Go behind the scenes with Collet-Serra as his team creates a white-knuckle ride through New York’s underbelly. (Blu-ray only)
  • Action All Night – The film’s cast and crew discuss that special something that has made Neeson a staple of grit and vulnerability on the screen. (Blu-ray only)
  • Deleted Scenes

The Cat Returns (Hiroyuki Morita) Rated G [75 mins] – Haru, a schoolgirl bored by her ordinary routine, saves the life of an unusual cat, and suddenly her world is transformed beyond anything she ever imagined. To change her fate, she’ll need to learn to believe in herself and, in the process, she will learn to appreciate her everyday life. Starring Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes, Peter Boyle, Elliott Gould, Andy Richter, Rene Auberjonois, Tim Curry, Judy Greer, Andrew Bevis, and Kristen Bell

My thoughts: It’s been a really long time since I’ve seen The Cat Returns. In fact I’ve only seen it once. There’s a very simple story told here and the characters are not very memorable. Not one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies, but still a nice kids film. RENT IT!

Special features:

  • Original Japanese Storyboards
  • Original Japanese Trailers
  • TV Spots
  • The Making of The Cat Returns
  • Behind The Microphone

Unfinished Business (Ken Scott) Rated R [91 min] – A hard-working small business owner and his two associates travel to Europe to close the most important deal of their lives. But what began as a routine business trip goes off the rails in every way imaginable – and unimaginable – way, including unplanned stops at a massive sex fetish event and a global economic summit. Starring Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco, Tom Wilkinson, Sienna Miller, and James Marsden

My thoughts: This movie tries really hard to excel past the typical Vince Vaughn formula, and it does to some extent. Unfinished Business is a very odd movie. The supporting characters are very odd and the film feels very morally ambiguous. In the end it has a good heart, but there isn’t really much of a story to grasp hold of and resonate with. There’s a handful of good laughs at least to enjoy. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Deleted and Alternate Scenes (Blu-ray and Digital HD): Caution: Not safe for work! Keep the party going with 30 minutes of outrageous additional footage you couldn’t see in theaters
  • Show Me Your Business: Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco, Tom Wilkinson, James Marsden, Sienna Miller, and Nick Frost share their wildest, craziest and most memorable experiences on set
  • Gallery: Hilarious stock photo images of Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco, and Tom Wilkinson posing in office settings

The Lazarus Effect (David Gelb) Rated PG-13 [83 min] – A group of medical students discover a way to bring dead patients back to life. Starring Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Evan Peters, and Sarah Bolger

My thoughts: This Pet Sematary knock off is pretty horrendous. Its low budget shows its true colors with subpar special effects and one main set. It comes across as a bottle episode of TV where all the characters are trapped in a single location for the entire run time. Even with the great actors involved, The Lazarus Effect’s terrible script is too much for them to carry the heavy burden. SKIP IT!

Special features include:

  • Creating Fear: The Making of The Lazarus Effect
  • Playing God: The Moral Dilemma (Blu-ray only)
  • Deleted/Extended Scenes (Blu-ray only)
  • Includes Digital HD (Blu-ray only)

The Wrecking Crew (Denny Tedesco) Rated PG [101 min] – A celebration of the musical work of a group of session musicians known as “The Wrecking Crew”, a band that provided back-up instrumentals to such legendary recording artists as Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys and Bing Crosby. Starring Lou Adler, Herb Alpert, and The Association

My thoughts: I grew up listening to oldies. Don’t ask me why, it’s just one of those things that kind of happens. And i don’t regret it at all. If you love the classics, The Wrecking Crew is a really hands-on look into the music industry of the era. It’s a straight-forward documentary with great perspective. BUY OR RENT OR STREAM!

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes:
    • Musicians
    • Engineers
    • Artists
    • Producers/Arrangers
    • Songs
    • Themes
    • Musician Jokes

Wild Tales (Damián Szifrón) Rated R [122 min] – A story about love deception, the return of the past, a tragedy, or even the violence contained in an everyday detail, appear themselves to push them towards the abyss, into the undeniable pleasure of losing control. Starring Liliana Ackerman, Luis Manuel Altamirano García, Alejandro Angelini, and Damián Benítez

My thoughts: I unfortunately have not seen this film, but it looked good and the reviews are good. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • New video interview with director Damián Szifron
  • Making of featurette
  • Original Trailer

Beyond the Reach (Jean-Baptiste Léonetti) Rated R [95 min] – A high-rolling corporate shark and his impoverished young guide play the most dangerous game during a hunting trip in the Mojave Desert. Starring Michael Douglas, Jeremy Irvine, and Martin Palmer

My thoughts: With Arnold, Sean Penn, Stallone, Travolta, and many other aging actors getting back into action these days, Beyond the Reach doesn’t feel as tired as you’d expect with Michael Douglas in the forefront. There’s enough tension to keep your interest in the so so story. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • The Making of Beyond the Reach
  • Six Wheeling: Inside and Outside the Ultimate Ride

Time Lapse (Bradley King) Not Yet Rated [104 min] – Three friends discover a mysterious machine that takes pictures 24hrs into the future and conspire to use it for personal gain, until disturbing and dangerous images begin to develop. Starring Danielle Panabaker, Matt O’Leary, and George Finn

My thoughts: I saw Time Lapse last year during the San Diego Film Festival. With high-expectations based on positive word-of-mouth, I was let down because I don’t think that the end of the film brings the story to a good conclusion. Time travel movies are hard, but I can’t give it a pass purely on the ambition of the filmmaker. It’s definitely refreshing and tries something new though. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX!

  • Two filmmaker commentaries

Television Releases

The Newsroom: The Complete Third Season (Aaron Sorkin) Rated TV-MA [55 min] A news anchor’s life is stirred up when he’s forced to work with a new team of colleagues. Starring Jeff Daniels, Margaret Judson, and Emily Mortimer

My thoughts: I sadly have not seen an episode of this show, but now that it’s over I will have to sit down and binge.

No special features listed

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Final Season (Lee Aronsohn and Chuck Lorre) [22 min] – A hedonistic jingle writer’s free-wheeling life comes to an abrupt halt when his brother and 10-year-old nephew move into his beach-front house. Starring Jon Cryer, Ashton Kutcher, and Angus T. Jones

My thoughts: I’ve never really liked Two and a Half Men, I particularly hate the theme song. I thought I’d give this season a try just to check it out in a post-Charlie Sheen world. Ashton Kutcher really doesn’t bring any substance to the sitcom and provides a very weird vibe. I would honestly prefer Charlie Sheen because at least it felt more honest. This is just a stretch that I’m sure many fans are glad to see is now over. SKIP IT!

Movies on Blu-ray

Kingsman: The Secret Service (Matthew Vaughn) Rated R [129 min] – A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. Starring Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, and Michael Caine (Watch the trailer)

Not Matthew Vaughn’s best, but still a decent amount of fun. The second half plays it kind of loose and wild, but the cast is too great to see it as just your average spy thriller. RENT IT! Special features included are:

  • Audio Commentary
  • Kingman: The Secret Service Revealed – Panel-To-Screen: The education of a 21st Century Super Spy
  • Heroes and Rogues
  • Style All His Own
  • Tools of The Trade
  • Breathtakingly Brutal
  • Culture Clash: The Comic Book Origins of The Secret Service
  • And more…

The DUFF (Ari Sandel) Rated PG-13 [101 min] – A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution after finding out that she has been labeled the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier more popular friends. Starring Mae Whitman, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, Bianca Santos, Skyler Samuels, Ken Jeong, Nick Eversman, Allison Janney, and Romany Malco

Yes, The DUFF is practically your modern take on She’s All That, however, it’s so witty and quirky that you will be pleasantly surprised by how much enjoyment you’ll get out of it. I’D BUY IT, BUT DEFINITELY RENT IT! Special features include:

  • “The DUFF Hits The Red Carpet” featurette
  • “Bringing the Book to Life” featurette
  • “Teen Comedies and The DUFF” featurette
  • “I Am the DUFF” featurette
  • The DUFF Files
  • Extended Gag Reel

Project Almanac (Dean Israelite) Rated PG-13 [106 min] – A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control. Starring Amy Landecker, Sofia Black-D’Elia, Virginia Gardner, and Jonny Weston (WATCH THE TRAILER)

As far as time travel films are concerned, Project Almanac gets points for trying. The characters are very unlikable, but the hijinks and the way time travel is used is definitely different than what we’ve seen before. Squandered potential. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features included are:

  • Alternate Opening
  • Deleted Scenes

Serena (Susanne Bier) Rated R [109 min] – In Depression-era North Carolina, the future of George Pemberton’s timber empire becomes complicated when he marries Serena. Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Rhys Ifans, and Toby Jones

I have not seen this film, and I have not anything good about it. It’d be interesting to see what kind of disaster it is. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features included are:

  • Interviews With Cast & Crew

Television Releases

The Last Ship: The Complete First Season (Steven Kane and Hank Steinberg) Rated TV-14 [45 min] – The crew of a naval destroyer is forced to confront the reality of a new existence when a pandemic kills off most of the earth’s population. Starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra, and Adam Baldwin

I’ve never seen this show, but the previews when I sit in theaters waiting for movies to start make the show look really interesting. Special features included are:

  • Comic Con Panel Interview
  • Behind the Episodes
  • The Making of Last Ship
  • Character Pieces
  • Prequels
  • Cast Interviews
  • Digital HD UltraViolet Digital Copy

Teen Wolf: The Complete Fourth Season (Jeff Davis) [DVD ONLY] Rated TV-14 [41 min] – A somewhat awkward teen is attacked by a werewolf and inherits the curse himself, as well as the enemies that come with it. Starring Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, and Tyler Hoechlin

If you prefer teen werewolf angst over teen vampire angst, MTV’s Teen Wolf definitely holds its own against popular young adult series like The Vampire Diaries or The Originals. I’d say it’s better because the characters are more human and realistically better written. Special features included are:

  • Gag Reels
  • Weaponized (Extended Episode)
  • Shirtless Montage
  • SFX Reel
  • The Beasts of Beacon Hills

The Strain: The Complete First Season (Collector’s Edition) (Guellermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan) When a freak virus kills all but four passengers on an airplane at JFK, Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), head of the Center for Disease Control’s “Canary Team,” is immediately called to the scene. With help from a mysterious Holocaust survivor (David Bradley), “Eph” and his colleague (Mía Maestro) uncover the outbreak’s ties to vampirism. Now, the only way to stop the terrifying disease from wiping out mankind is to face its source – a sinister supernatural creature known as “The Master” – whose evil intent seems more powerful than any other force on Earth! Starring Kevin Durand, Corey Stoll, and David Bradley

I have not seen this show, and haven’t heard much of anything good or bad about it. Special features included are:

  • In the Beginning
  • A Novel Approach
  • He Is Here
  • Setrakian’s Lair
  • Audio Commentary on Select Episodes
  • Deleted Scenes
