The Coolest Comic-Con 2015 Booths, Exhibits, and Experiences

So here we are again. San Diego Comic-Con. The place that makes geek wet dreams come true. I definitely was excited to get my nerd on this weekend, and I’m always looking forward to seeing what new booths, exhibits, and experiences SDCC has to offer. Suffice it to say, I was a tad underwhelmed by most of what I saw inside and out of the San Diego Convention Center.

This is my fourth year attending Comic-Con. Every year I’m always expecting something different, looking to see new things, but as far as booths go, Comic-Con 2015 seemed a bit lackluster. Most of the major booths and exhibits such as Lionsgate, Warner Bros., DC Comics, Fox, Weta Workshop, Gentle Giant, Image Comics, Marvel, Nintendo, and X-Box among others were pretty much the same as the last few years. And even exhibitors like PlayStation were completely absent. Ubisoft and a few others cut back on the scale of their booths. Even Marvel downsized from a big video screen on their booth to just a giant scrawl to promote Ant-Man.

Last year, DC Comics gave a preview of the cape and cowl that Ben Affleck’s Batman will be wearing in Batman v Superman. This year they went one level up by showcasing the costumes of

However, there were some Comic-Con 2015 booths that did impress me. It wasn’t the movie studios who were going all out, but it was TV series who were making their mark on the show floor, and even outside. As per usual, The Walking Dead booth dominated the floor with a fun experience with multiple photo ops with the undead to tease the upcoming season – they also spoiled some major plot points from the last season. MTV’s Scream and History’s Vikings had fun booth experiences to get splattered by blood and walk away with some swag.

The most comprehensive Comic-Con 2015 booths weren’t inside however, they were outside the convention center. MTV’s Scream Queens had a carnival giant drop ride and FX hosted huge experiences such as an America Horror Story: Hotel recreation and a giant Fargo snow globe. Even Adult Swim had its own area for fans to play around in with a little carnival setting for folks to play games and win prizes.

Nerd HQ changed venues this year and instead of taking over PETCO Park they inhabited three levels of the New Children’s Museum. It was closer to the convention center and had more room for activities.

These are a few stray observations I noticed that I thought I would share. Many folks are not able to make it to Comic-Con and I hope this photo gallery will at least give you a solid taste of what it is like to walk around the epic convention.

  • Supergirl – In the vast DC Comics Universe of superheroes, the rich mythology of Superman, the planet Krypton and the House of El is perhaps the most famous and instantly recognizable. Enter Supergirl! Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El but didn’t arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin. Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant, Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head, Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world. Her foes include both a sinister extraterrestrial menace and the high-tech terrestrial threat of clever villains with powerful weaponry. The series stars Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee), Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy), and Mehcad Brooks (True Blood), with David Harewood (Homeland) and Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters), and is executive produced by Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow), Ali Adler (Chuck), Andrew Kreisberg (The Flash, Arrow) and Sarah Schechter (Pan, The Flash). From Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, Supergirl premieres Mondays at 8/7c on CBS this November.
  • Blindspot – Sullivan Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire) and Jaimie Alexander (Thor films) star in Blindspot, a one-hour action thriller from Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Arrow, Pan) and writer/executive producer Martin Gero (Stargate: Atlantis). Stapleton plays hardened FBI agent Kurt Weller, who is drawn into a complex conspiracy when a naked amnesiac, Jane Doe (Alexander), is found in Times Square covered in a series of cryptic tattoos…including his name on her back. As Weller and his teammates at the FBI begin to investigate the veritable treasure map found in Jane Doe’s tattoos, they are drawn into a high-stakes underworld that twists and turns through a labyrinth of secrets and revelations-the information they uncover might ultimately change the world. In addition to Stapleton and Alexander, the series stars Rob Brown (Treme), Audrey Esparza (Public Morals), Ukweli Roach (Eternal Law), Ashley Johnson (The Killing), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without a Trace). From Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television Blindspot premieres this fall Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
  • Containment – When a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, a vast urban quarantine is quickly enforced, forcing those stuck on the inside to fight for their lives while local and federal officials desperately search for a. Torn apart from their loved ones, the survivors trapped within the cordon are fighting against not only fatal infection but also isolation, fear, and the disintegration of society around them. But as they begin to gain each other’s trust, hope remains, and on either side of the cordon unlikely heroes will rise. Containment stars David Gyasi (Interstellar), Christina Moses (How We Met), Chris Wood (The Vampire Diaries), Kristen Gutoskie, Claudia Black (The Originals), George Young, Hanna Mangan Lawrence ( Spartacus: Vengeance), and Trevor St. John (One Life to Live). Based on the original Belgian series created by Carl Joos for Eyeworks, Containment is produced by My So-Called Company in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and David Nutter (The Flash, Arrow).
  • Lucifer – Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar has resigned his throne and retired to the City of Angels, where he owns an upscale piano bar called Lux. When a beautiful pop star is murdered, for the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him. Is he actually capable of feelings for a human being? The very thought disturbs him. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell. But with the City of Angels at his feet and a newfound purpose, Lucifer’s having too much fun to go back now. Sexy, dark and irreverent, Lucifer stars Tom Ellis (Rush), Lauren German (Chicago Fire), DB Woodside (24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Spartacus series), Nicholas Gonzalez (Sleepy Hollow), Scarlett Estevez, and Rachael Harris (The Hangover) and is executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean films), Jonathan Littman (CSI series), Tom Kapinos (Californication), Ildy Modrovich (Necessary Roughness), Len Wiseman (Underworld films), and Joe Henderson (Almost Human). Movies on Blu-ray

Kingsman: The Secret Service (Matthew Vaughn) Rated R [129 min] – A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. Starring Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, and Michael Caine (Watch the trailer)

Not Matthew Vaughn’s best, but still a decent amount of fun. The second half plays it kind of loose and wild, but the cast is too great to see it as just your average spy thriller. RENT IT! Special features included are:

  • Audio Commentary
  • Kingman: The Secret Service Revealed – Panel-To-Screen: The education of a 21st Century Super Spy
  • Heroes and Rogues
  • Style All His Own
  • Tools of The Trade
  • Breathtakingly Brutal
  • Culture Clash: The Comic Book Origins of The Secret Service
  • And more…

The DUFF (Ari Sandel) Rated PG-13 [101 min] – A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution after finding out that she has been labeled the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier more popular friends. Starring Mae Whitman, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, Bianca Santos, Skyler Samuels, Ken Jeong, Nick Eversman, Allison Janney, and Romany Malco

Yes, The DUFF is practically your modern take on She’s All That, however, it’s so witty and quirky that you will be pleasantly surprised by how much enjoyment you’ll get out of it. I’D BUY IT, BUT DEFINITELY RENT IT! Special features include:

  • “The DUFF Hits The Red Carpet” featurette
  • “Bringing the Book to Life” featurette
  • “Teen Comedies and The DUFF” featurette
  • “I Am the DUFF” featurette
  • The DUFF Files
  • Extended Gag Reel

Project Almanac (Dean Israelite) Rated PG-13 [106 min] – A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control. Starring Amy Landecker, Sofia Black-D’Elia, Virginia Gardner, and Jonny Weston (WATCH THE TRAILER)

As far as time travel films are concerned, Project Almanac gets points for trying. The characters are very unlikable, but the hijinks and the way time travel is used is definitely different than what we’ve seen before. Squandered potential. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features included are:

  • Alternate Opening
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Alternate Endings

Serena (Susanne Bier) Rated R [109 min] – In Depression-era North Carolina, the future of George Pemberton’s timber empire becomes complicated when he marries Serena. Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Rhys Ifans, and Toby Jones

I have not seen this film, and I have not anything good about it. It’d be interesting to see what kind of disaster it is. WAIT FOR IT ON NETFLIX! Special features included are:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Dissecting The Characters
  • The Story & Set
  • Interviews With Cast & Crew

Television Releases

The Last Ship: The Complete First Season (Steven Kane and Hank Steinberg) Rated TV-14 [45 min] – The crew of a naval destroyer is forced to confront the reality of a new existence when a pandemic kills off most of the earth’s population. Starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra, and Adam Baldwin

I’ve never seen this show, but the previews when I sit in theaters waiting for movies to start make the show look really interesting. Special features included are:

  • Comic Con Panel Interview
  • Behind the Episodes
  • The Making of Last Ship
  • Character Pieces
  • Prequels
  • Cast Interviews
  • Digital HD UltraViolet Digital Copy

Teen Wolf: The Complete Fourth Season (Jeff Davis) [DVD ONLY] Rated TV-14 [41 min] – A somewhat awkward teen is attacked by a werewolf and inherits the curse himself, as well as the enemies that come with it. Starring Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, and Tyler Hoechlin

If you prefer teen werewolf angst over teen vampire angst, MTV’s Teen Wolf definitely holds its own against popular young adult series like The Vampire Diaries or The Originals. I’d say it’s better because the characters are more human and realistically better written. Special features included are:

  • Gag Reels
  • Weaponized (Extended Episode)
  • Shirtless Montage
  • SFX Reel
  • The Beasts of Beacon Hills

The Strain: The Complete First Season (Collector’s Edition) (Guellermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan) When a freak virus kills all but four passengers on an airplane at JFK, Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), head of the Center for Disease Control’s “Canary Team,” is immediately called to the scene. With help from a mysterious Holocaust survivor (David Bradley), “Eph” and his colleague (Mía Maestro) uncover the outbreak’s ties to vampirism. Now, the only way to stop the terrifying disease from wiping out mankind is to face its source – a sinister supernatural creature known as “The Master” – whose evil intent seems more powerful than any other force on Earth! Starring Kevin Durand, Corey Stoll, and David Bradley

I have not seen this show, and haven’t heard much of anything good or bad about it. Special features included are:

  • In the Beginning
  • A Novel Approach
  • He Is Here
  • Setrakian’s Lair
  • Audio Commentary on Select Episodes
  • Deleted Scenes
