Netflix Streaming Report: The Flash Season 1, Arrow Season 3, AHS: Freakshow, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for October 8, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with The Flash Season 1, Arrow Season 3, iZombie Season 1, AHS: Freakshow, and more.

The Flash Season 1 (Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, and Andrew Kreisberg) Rated TV-PG [43 min] – Barry Allen wakes up 9 months after he was struck by lightning and discovers that the bolt gave him the power of super speed. With his new team and powers, Barry becomes “The Flash” and fights crime in Central City. Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavangh, and Jesse L. Martin

This is a series that demands your attention. You may think that The Flash is just a throwaway character based on his abilities, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. And more to this show as well. There’s a clever balance of comic wit, fun action, and colorful characters that makes The Flash a very formidable and one of the best superhero series ever created. It’s so detailed in developing the character that there just isn’t enough time spent with the scarlet speedster that the second season hasn’t come soon enough!

Arrow Season 3

Arrow Season 3 (Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg) –  Spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow. Starring Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, and David Ramsey

Despite a slow, almost uninteresting first season, Arrow has continually progressed to become a series that has rewarded patience. The third season presents a more transitional period for Oliver that sets up big change our heroes, and right now, having all three seasons on Netflix, is the best time to catch up!

iZombie Season 1 (Diane Ruggiero and Rob Thomas) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – A medical resident finds that being a zombie has its perks, which she uses to assist the police. Starring Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, and Blaine DeBeers

I was surprised how digestible iZombie actually is when I checked out the first few episodes. It’s playful and silly, but in a good way that works in the strange world it has created for itself.

twisty the clown american horror story freak show

American Horror: Story: Freak Show (Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk) Rated TV-MA [43 min] – An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a haunted house, an insane asylum, a witch coven and a freak show. Starring Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Michael Chiklis, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Emma Roberts, Finn Wittrock, Angela Bassett, and Kathy Bates

I have yet to see Freak Show, but I have not heard any positives toward this season. It has all the right elements, so I look forward to seeing this train wreck and why it broke many fans.

Now Available to Own: Age of Ultron, Spy, Jane the Virgin, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of September 29, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spy, Jane the Virgin, NBA 2K16 and more.

Movies on Blu-ray

Avengers: Age of Ultron (Joss Whedon) [AVAILABLE OCT. 2] Rated PG-13 [141 min] – When Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and it’s up to the Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemswort, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and James Spader (Watch the trailer)

What can be said about one of the most bloated, disappointing, and yet gleefully entertaining films of the year? I believe I saw The Avengers three times in theaters, but only managed to see Avengers: Age of Ultron once. Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe upped the game and when it came time to Age of Ultron I was fully unprepared for how Earth-shattering it would be. Reality did not align with my expectations. Age of Ultron is just about everything I could have ever asked for. Maybe it came too late? If this was the first Avengers film I might have shit my pants. However, with no build up to Ultron, himself, the reward of the team up doesn’t seem as fun or meaningful. I still like the movie, it’s solid popcorn fare, but I needed more. Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary
  • Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • Making-of Featurettes
  • Gag Reel

Entourage (Doug Ellin) Rated R [104 min] – Movie star Vincent Chase, together with his boys Eric, Turtle, and Johnny, are back – and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold on a risky project that will serve as Vince’s directorial debut. Starring Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Dillon, and Jeremy Piven

Entourage has always been given a bad rap. Never having seen the HBO series, I’ve always had the idea in the back of my mind that it is trash-TV. So I decided to give it a chance and check out the Entourage movie. And boy did my expectations meet reality far better than with Age of Ultron. The Entourage movie is pure cinematic garbage. It’s shot beautifully, and there are beautiful people in almost every frame, but Entourage is a total train wreck. Not only is a model/actress a McGuffin, the entire crew of sleazebags have no redeeming qualities to care about their circumstances. Watching Entourage is like subjecting myself to pin pricks to my eyeballs. I had more enjoyment staring at the super blood moon eclipse for less than five minutes than I did this film’s entire run time.

Special features include:

  • The Gang – Still Rockin’ It
  • Hollywood, Baby!
  • The Making of Hyde
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • Meet the Newest Member of Entourage
  • Lucas Ellin is Jonah Gold

Spy (Paul Feig) Rated R [120 min] – A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster. Starring Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Jason Statham, Allison Janney, Miranda Hart, and Peter Serafinowicz

I liked Bridesmaids and disliked The Heat, so I had a mixed-bag of feelings toward Spy and director Paul Feig. The trailer made the flick look bad and Melissa McCarthy’s filmography hasn’t exactly been filled with more hilarious hits as enjoyable as Bridesmaids. Taking this all into consideration, I walked away pleasantly delighted by what I saw. It could have amped up the energy a little earlier on, but Spy proved to be a pretty refreshing take on the genre. [Read more of my thoughts on Spy here]

Television Series

iZombie: The Complete First Season (Diane Ruggiero and Rob Thomas) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – A medical resident finds that being a zombie has its perks, which she uses to assist the police. Starring Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, and Blaine DeBeers

I’m not a crime procedural kind of guy. I think flavor of the week investigation shows like CSI and NCIS are almost as bad as reality television. But with iZombie there’s an actual through line with a cohesive plot that carries over to each episode – this is what keeps me invested. From what I’ve seen thus far from Season 1, iZombie is light and easily digestible thanks to its likable cast. When the show first appeared on the scene I disregarded it like any other youthful CW series, but iZombie surprises and the lead, Rose McIver, is pretty fun to watch in the undead role.

  • Deleted Scenes
  • iZombie: 2014 Comic-Con Panel

Jane the Virgin: The Complete First Season (Jennie Snyder Urman) Rated TV-14 [43 min] – Jane is a 23 year old hard-working, religious Latina woman, whose family tradition and vow to save her virginity until marriage to a long time boyfriend and detective, is shattered when her doctor mistakenly artificially inseminates her during a checkup. And to make matters worse, the biological donor is a married man, a former playboy, and cancer survivor who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works, but was also her former teenage crush. Starring Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Justin Baldoni, Ivonne Coll, Brett Dier, Jaime Camil, and Anthony Mendez

I never watched a single episode while Jane the Virgin aired because once again I disregarded this series as yet another youthful CW series. But after Gina Rodriguez continued to gain recognition and awards for her role as Jane I figured no harm would come in checking this series out. After binging over 120 hours of ABC Family shows, Jane the Virgin felt like a breeze. There’s many similarities in tone in what you’d find on both networks. But unlike any ABC Family dramedy where the most coincidental instances happen to their characters, Jane the Virgin purposefully amps up the drama due to its telenovela roots. It’s a sweet, silly romp that carries pretty heavy themes that cleverly balances out with comedy thanks to its smart writing.

Friday Comic-Con 2015 Cosplay Photo Gallery

Let’s continue, shall we? When we last met, I shared with you all the incredible cosplayers from Preview Night and Thursday of Comic-Con 2015. We had to combine the day and a half excursion due to thinly spread costumed fans. Luckily, we didn’t have to search far on Friday to catch the many attendees dressed – or some undressed – to the nines in their favorite cosplay attire.

Disney Princesses, X-Men, DC villains, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Studio Ghibli, and The Legend of Korra fans flocked to the San Diego Convention Center to strut their stuff. And for those looking beyond the usual, there were plenty of characters that reach all fandoms. With the budding success of Mad Max: Fury Road, I was happy to see more cosplayers taking on characters from the incredible film – my review.

Day reflections:

  • The folks from Nerd Chat Cosplay rocked it again
  • There was a spot on Agent Coulson cosplayer
  • Despite being an abundance of Harley Quinns everywhere you look, they’re always so creative
  • I will never look at the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange the same again
  • Mixing bodypaint and fandom to promote your mobile app is pretty smart if used correctly, as seen below
  • It’s incredible how some people can make human versions of Pokémon cute
  • The Samus Aran I met was very well done
  • I’m shocked by the lack of Kill la Kill and Attack on Titan
  • Spider-Gwen was also a huge hit at WonderCon. They’re pretty absent at SDCC
  • It’s my Dick in a Box!

  • Supergirl – In the vast DC Comics Universe of superheroes, the rich mythology of Superman, the planet Krypton and the House of El is perhaps the most famous and instantly recognizable. Enter Supergirl! Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El but didn’t arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin. Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant, Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head, Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world. Her foes include both a sinister extraterrestrial menace and the high-tech terrestrial threat of clever villains with powerful weaponry. The series stars Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee), Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy), and Mehcad Brooks (True Blood), with David Harewood (Homeland) and Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters), and is executive produced by Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow), Ali Adler (Chuck), Andrew Kreisberg (The Flash, Arrow) and Sarah Schechter (Pan, The Flash). Stapleton plays hardened FBI agent Kurt Weller, who is drawn into a complex conspiracy when a naked amnesiac, Jane Doe (Alexander), is found in Times Square covered in a series of cryptic tattoos…including his name on her back. As Weller and his teammates at the FBI begin to investigate the veritable treasure map found in Jane Doe’s tattoos, they are drawn into a high-stakes underworld that twists and turns through a labyrinth of secrets and revelations-the information they uncover might ultimately change the world. In addition to Stapleton and Alexander, the series stars Rob Brown (Treme), Audrey Esparza (Public Morals), Ukweli Roach (Eternal Law), Ashley Johnson (The Killing), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without a Trace). From Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television Blindspot premieres this fall Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
  • Containment – When a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, a vast urban quarantine is quickly enforced, forcing those stuck on the inside to fight for their lives while local and federal officials desperately search for a. Torn apart from their loved ones, the survivors trapped within the cordon are fighting against not only fatal infection but also isolation, fear, and the disintegration of society around them. But as they begin to gain each other’s trust, hope remains, and on either side of the cordon unlikely heroes will rise. Containment stars David Gyasi (Interstellar), Christina Moses (How We Met), Chris Wood (The Vampire Diaries), Kristen Gutoskie, Claudia Black (The Originals), George Young, Hanna Mangan Lawrence ( Spartacus: Vengeance), and Trevor St. John (One Life to Live). Based on the original Belgian series created by Carl Joos for Eyeworks, Containment is produced by My So-Called Company in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and David Nutter (The Flash, Arrow).
  • Lucifer – Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar has resigned his throne and retired to the City of Angels, where he owns an upscale piano bar called Lux. When a beautiful pop star is murdered, for the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him. Is he actually capable of feelings for a human being? The very thought disturbs him. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell. But with the City of Angels at his feet and a newfound purpose, Lucifer’s having too much fun to go back now.
