Netflix Streaming Report: Moonrise Kingdom, The Bank Job, The Fosters, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for September 17, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Moonrise Kingdom, The Bank Job, The Fosters, and more.

Moonrise Kingdom: Criterion Collection (Wes Anderson) Rated PG-13 [94 min] – A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out to find them. Starring Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, and Jason Schwartzman

Since The Grand Budapest Hotel isn’t available on Netflix, Moonrise Kingdom is your next best bet to get your Wes Anderson fix. It’s really playful and has a great charm with its young lead. The cast is lively, fun, and endearing. if you aren’t keen on Anderson’s more artsy films, check out Moonrise Kingdom, it is far easier to digest.

Men, Women & Children (Jason Reitman) Rated R [119 min] – A look at the sexual frustrations that young teenagers and adults face in today’s world. Starring Ansel Elgort, Adam Sandler, Judy Greer, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jennifer Garner, Dean Norris, Kaitlyn Dever, J.K. Simmons, and Emma Thompson

I don’t envy anyone trying to weave together interrelated stories to create one cohesive film. And if I thought anyone could pull it together it would be Jason Reitman (Up in the Air; Juno; Thank You for Smoking). Unfortunately he didn’t quite stick the landing. Men, Women & Children is a step above and beyond his previous feature, Labor Day, but the film plays it too safe by delivering something sadly generic and incredibly depressing. There’s a solid cast here, I just wish there was more substance than what you’d come to expect.

The Fosters: The Complete Third Season (Brad Bredeweg and Peter Paige) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – Teenager Callie Jacobs is placed in a foster home with a lesbian couple and their blend of biological, adoptive and foster children.Creators: Stars: Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Hayden Byerly, Maia Mitchell, David Lambert, Danny Nucci, and Cierra Ramirez

If you’re ever in the market for a series that bridges the gap between daytime soaps and young adult women, ABC Family has cracked the code. Their half-hour sitcoms are a different story. Armed with a slew of carefully targeted program is so craftily put together, ABC Family is unlike any other channel out there. The Fosters is a good show, full of many feels and maybe too much coincidental drama that you’d think you’re back in Degrassi High. There are a lot of topical situations that The Fosters nails on the head with acute precision and grace, but if you can’t believe that so much drama can befall one family you might want to look elsewhere.

The Bank Job (Roger Donaldson) Rated R [111 min] – Martine offers Terry a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London’s Baker Street. She targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don’t realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets – secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal. Starring Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows, Stephen Campbell Moore

I’ve never seen The Bank Job, but it’s on Netflix in case you need your Jason Statham fix.

Disney’s THE JUNGLE BOOK Teaser Trailer

Following Walt Disney’s trend of turning their most beloved animated classics into epic live-action features, including Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and this year’s Cinderella, the first trailer for The Jungle Book has arrived. Remember that one Disney animated movie you watched on repeat for the first three years of your life, driving your parents insane? For some it was The Little Mermaid, Cinderella or maybe The Lion King. For me, it was The Jungle Book. And this teaser has me as excited as a little girl on Christmas day.

The visual landscapes seen in The Jungle Book teaser are absolutely lush and incredibly striking, complemented well by an eerie voice over by Scarlett Johansson, who’s cast as the gender-swapped boa constrictor, Kaa. Although we don’t hear him speak, we are introduced to Mowgli, played by Neel Sethi, whose young shoulders won’t just be carrying pots of water, but also the majority of the film. The gentle panther Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley), the villainous tiger Shere Kahn (voiced by Idris Elba), and the boisterous King Louie (voiced by Christopher Walken) are also teased. While the only real dialogue we get is from Kaa’s voice over, I am eagerly awaiting more tidbits from the characters played by this power house cast, which is rounded out by Bill Murray‘s Baloo.

Absent from the teaser is the noteworthy singing and jazzy dancing from the animated film. Instead we are given action-packed shots that give a large sense of danger that one could expect from being the lone man-cub lost in the jungle. While I love rich visuals and the promise of an epic adventure, I hope the soul of the animated film isn’t lost in translation. The sweet relationship between Baloo and Mowgli, along with the songs – that to this day I still can’t get out of my head – are just as, if not more important, to the story and should not be put on the back burners in favor of the action.

While the previous live-action films have seen varying success, the studio continues to plunge into their vault to deliver different styles for each. Alice in Wonderland, a CGI-heavy, cartoonish romp; Maleficent, a fantastical twist from a villain’s perspective; and Cinderella, a family-oriented love story about kindness toward others. The Jungle Book feels very action-oriented, which should be great coming from Iron Man director Jon Favreau, but what other changes can we expect to see from the animated version? Is there more material from the original novel that this feature will expand upon?

Based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli, a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan, who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera, and the free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

Directed by Jon Favreau, The Jungle Book stars Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken, Giancarlo Esposito, Idris Elba, Jon Favreau, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Ineson, Emjay Anthony, and Neel Sethi as Mogli. This film is set to release theaters on April 15, 2016.

Now Available to Own: Cinderella, Empire, Fullmetal Alchemist, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of September 15, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. Cinderella (Kenneth Branagh) Rated PG [112 min] – When her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her daughters. I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw the live-action adaptation of Cinderella in theaters earlier this year. After my first viewing, I rewatched the original 1950 animated film and was shocked at how bad it is. It’s not that it’s too childish, there just isn’t much of a plot or story. Cinderella’s arc in the animated feature is very linear and the movie focuses more on the mice wanting to protect and help Cindy from her step family. What I enjoy about the live-action adaptation is that it puts more weight and humanity into the character of Cinderella. There’s more to resonate with her and more to the story than just love at first sight. It’s still somewhat a part of the story, but Kenneth Brannagh makes it at least seem like the Prince finds more to like about Cinderella than just her looks, but not so much vice versa. Lily James is also really excellent. I could have done without Helena Bonham Carter though.

Love & Mercy (Bill Pohlad) [Limited] Rated PG-13 [120 min] – In the 1960s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, and Paul Giamatti

As far as biopics go, Love & Mercy is fairly well done but maintains the genre’s vanilla flavor. I do like that it’s more of character piece rather than showcasing events around Brian Wilson. All the performances are terrific, especially from Paul Dano. And of course the iconic Beachboys music. What I would have wanted more from Love & Mercy is for John Cusack’s older Wilson to have something else to do rather than him being a tortured character.

This movie is silly. I can only imagine this extended edition being even sillier. And if you’re really bold you can get the Fast & Furious 1-7 Limited Edition Collection.

I’ve given The Big Bang Theory a handful of chances despite my prejudice against the grating, pandering garbage that it is. And now in its eighth season, The Big Bang Theory continues to be that steaming pile but only now more stale. Sheldon is a terrible character who is unrelatable with sidekicks who hardly get enough to do to really resonate with them. I wish this series would end.

I’m pretty glad I’ve held out for the Blu-ray release of the first Fullmetal Alchemist series. Although it’s not as epic as FMA: Brotherhood it’s still pretty decent. It’s definitely essential viewing before you watch Brotherhood. The Limited Collector’s Edition is insanely awesome, but at almost $300 it’s way too much money.

This is a fabulous collection to own of one of the best, good-spirited pieces of entertainment out there. It’s great to be able to relive the specials I’ve seen and digest the ones I’ve never had the opportunity to. Peanuts is so wholesome to watch that you forget that about entertainment like this that doesn’t play to anything sinister or ill-willed toward the characters. A coming of age story that anyone can relate to.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that it plans to celebrate the 15th anniversary of acclaimed director Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with a brand new Blu-ray release. Advertised as Mastered in 4K, the release will be available for purchase on April 5, 2016.

In addition to the standard release, Sony will have available for sale a Limited Edition Blu-ray which will street on the same date.

Box Office Battlefield: The Visit vs. The Perfect Guy

Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. The weekend warriors of September 11, 2015 includes The Visit and The Perfect Guy, as well as two limited releases. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others and determine who will be victorious. Should you see ’em, skip ’em, or rent ’em? Find out below!

Last weekend, not a single soul cared about the most recently released, being The Transporter Refueled and A Walk in the Woods. Instead, audiences decided it was best to throw their money at a faith based film no one has even talked about other than in box office reports, War Room. Straight Outta Compton almost ran away with a four weekend spree at the top spot, and everyone must have wanted to cleanse their palettes after all the gangster rap? Can M. Night Shamalamadingdong make his way back into the hearts of horror fans or will a hilariously awful looking film about a sociopath get its way? I see old people! This is the Box Office Battlefield:

The Visit (M. Night Shyamalan) Rated PG-13 [94 min] – A single mother finds that things in her family’s life go very wrong after her two young children visit their grandparents. Starring Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, and Peter McRobbie

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 64% • Audience – 64%

My review:

I really wanted to hate The Visit after being burned (see After Earth; The Last Airbender) by such a promising director with an eye for good suspense and storytelling (see Signs; The Sixth Sense), but I can’t. The Visit is definitely a step in the right direction for M. Night Shyamalan, though I wouldn’t be quick to say this a return to form. There are still awkward shifts in tone that aren’t quite as cringe worthy as the ones in The Happening and the characters are not the most likable people you care to root for. What works really well in The Visit is M. Night’s ability to create suspense through eerie visuals and uncomfortable tension. As with most of his works, The Visit is a slow burn only this time the twist pays off in spades. There are gaps in the plot that could have been filled and the movie feels a little long despite its short run-time. However, I can confidently say that I am now more open to see what M. Night can do if he can create another intimate story like this that is this just as entertaining. MATINEE IT!

The Perfect Guy (David M. Rosenthal) Rated PG-13 [100 min] – After breaking up with her boyfriend, a professional woman gets involved with a man who seems almost too good to be true. Starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut, and L. Scott Caldwell

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 25% • Audience – 78%

My take:

Not that I wanted to, but I couldn’t even see The Perfect Guy last night to review because it wasn’t playing in theaters last night nor was it screened for critics, which never speaks well to the quality of a film if thus is the case. The Perfect Guy does look a lot better and more put together than Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, but I can’t get over the intial concept to begin with. The trailer is a knee slapper, and the intensity from Michael Ealy is just hilarious because of how serious every thing is taken. It’s as if The Perfect Guy is the embodiment of the uncanny valley of movies. It wants to be taken seriously as a real movie but it’s oozing with superficiality. This movie looks bonkers in every way possible. WATCH IT ON NETFLIX!

Sleeping with Other People (Leslye Headland) [Limited] Rated R [95 min] – A good-natured womanizer and a serial cheater form a platonic relationship that helps reform them in ways, while a mutual attraction sets in. Starring Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, Jordan Carlos, and Margarita Levieva

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 53% • Audience – 70%

My take:

I like Alison Brie, but I can’t help but think she has a bad agent. She’s a wonderful television actress (see Mad Men; Community) and human being, however her roles on the big screen (Save the Date; Get Hard The 5-Year Engagement) have been pretty lackluster. Sleeping with Other People is definitely her biggest starring role in her career and I’m happy to see that she’s gaining more recognition, but the premise and trailer of the film seem so cliche. Nothing about it feels original or fresh. And I hate to be bias, but I have never liked anything Jason Sudeikis has done. Ever. RENT IT!

Goodnight Mommy (Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz) [Limited] Rated R [99 min] – Twin boys move to a new home with their mother after she has face changing cosmetic surgery, but under her bandages is someone the children don’t recognize. Starring Susanne Wuest, Lukas Schwarz, Elias Schwarz, and Hans Escher

My take:

I’ve tried to avoid a lot of the hype Goodnight Mommy has garnered since its festival circuit run. I was convinced of its value after taking only a peek at the trailer. The film looks so creepy. I love it. The reviews are hot and championing it. So I can’t wait to see it when it reaches theaters near me. SEE IT!

Let’s be honest here, The Perfect Stranger looks like the biggest joke of a movie that somehow escaped from the lost archives of Lifetime and made its way onto the silver screen by sheer luck. The Visit is rated PG-13 and I can’t help but think that moviegoers will be really curious after the fairly positive buzz being an M. Night Shyamalan movie and all. Everything else in theaters is so stale and folks have got to be thirsty for something new too. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend will be:

Netflix Streaming Report: Dear White People, The Blacklist, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for September 10, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Dear White People, The Blacklist, Teen Beach 2, and more.

Dear White People (Justin Simien) Rated R [100 min] – A satire that follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular African American-themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film explores racial identity in post-racial America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world. Starring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon Bell, Kyle Gallner, and Dennis Haysbert

When I first saw Dear White People in theaters I felt that it was highly intellectual, so much so that it may be too smart for not just myself but for most audiences to enjoy. I still think that. And the film has every right to be. I find it hard to like a movie that is so smug and smart because it’s hard to explain why you believe it’s good. The film carries its nose up in the air and will go over a lot of heads, but Dear White People is definitely a lively movie that shakes up current events in a very honest and entertaining fashion.

6 Years (Hannah Fidell) [Unrated [85 min] – A young couple bound by a seemingly ideal love, begins to unravel as unexpected opportunities spin them down a volatile and violent path and threaten the future they had always imagined. Starring Taissa Farmiga, Ben Rosenfield, Lindsay Burdge, and Joshua Leonard

This film just came out last month and has already hit Netflix. This is a pretty new concept as I’ve seen a few other films do so. I’m not sure what that says about this movie or the state of independent films, but I’m happy it’s more convenient to check out now considering my initial thoughts on the film.

The Blacklist (Season 2) (Jon Bokenkamp) Rated TV-14 [43 min] – Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Keen, a new FBI profiler has her entire life uprooted when a mysterious criminal, Raymond Reddington, on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted List turns himself in and insists on speaking to her. Starring James Spader, Megan Boone, Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix, Hisham Tawfiq, Amir Arison, and Mozhan Marno

I haven’t seen a single episode of The Blacklist yet, but now that we’re two seasons deep it definitely qualifies for a weekend binge session.

KRAMPUS Brings Unhappy Holidays with its First Trailer

Yuletide cheer has come early this year with the first trailer for Krampus. Tackling the spirit of Halloween in his directorial debut, Trick ‘r Treat, Michael Dougherty’s long-awaited sophomore followup will arrive early December as a fun precursor to Christmas. Those who do not know the urban legend of the anti-Santa will soon remember his name if this trailer is any indication of the joy this film will bring this holiday season.

Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Jack Frost immediately come to mind when I think of Christmas horror movies. And it has been quite some time since we’ve had another stand out as a modern entry in the niche genre. From the witty banter across the dinner table between Adam Scott and David Koechner to the mysterious dark helpers, Krampus seems like it could become the next annual Christmas horror tradition.

Michael Dougherty did a wonderful job capturing the essence of Halloween in Trick ‘r Treat and I would figure he would approach Krampus with the same love and care for this new holiday horror. After he finishes Trick ‘r Treat 2, perhaps the next holiday he’ll take on is Easter or Valentine’s Day. I’m sure with his creativity Dougherty would be able to deliver.

After years of a solitary life, she meets a man who might be worth losing her immortality for. Starring Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford, Kathy Baker, Ellen Burstyn, and Amanda Crew

In an age where most romantic films have dissolved into some kind of tween fantasy or a sloppy rom com with poop jokes, The Age of Adaline may have a sci-fi concept but at least it proves that Hollywood still has the capacity to produce an original story about love. Harrison Ford and Blake Lively give very genuine and heartfelt performances that truly speak to their talent. It’s not perfect, as some elements like Adaline’s current romance feel forced, however The Age of Adaline tells a good story enough to where you care about her outcome.

American Heist (Sarik Andreasyan) Rated R [94 min] – James owes his life to his older brother, Frankie after taking the rap for a crime they committed together. While Frankie served time, James worked to turn his life around, got a steady job and began courting his former girlfriend Emily. Now, Frankie is released and back on the streets with no money and no place to go. Starring Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, and Jordana Brewster

Generic, derivative, and lacking any kind of imagination, American Heist simply does not come across as the edgy and stylish cinematic adventure it hopes to be. The title alone says all you need to know about the film. The actors do the best they can, but even the dialogue drags down the movie. Maybe if American Heist came out 20 years ago it would have had folks talking. Instead it wastes the talent of Adrien Brody and my time.

Supernatural: The Complete Tenth Season (Eric Kripke) Rated TV-14 [44 min] – Two brothers follow their father’s footsteps as “hunters” fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth. Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, and Misha Collins

It takes a lot of gusto in order keep a series running for 10 seasons. And you can tell by watching this last season of Supernatural that the show has definitely come under some strain. The plot of Season 10 definitely meanders with little purpose while character motivations are hard to understand at times. There definitely are stronger seasons than this. Supernatural is beyond its prime and I hope the producers reach a satisfying ending rather than driving this beloved show into the ground.

Gotham: The Complete First Season (Bruno Heller) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – The story behind Commissioner James Gordon’s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman’s arrival. Starring Ben McKenzie, Jada Pinkett Smith, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Robin Lord Taylor

So what’s all the hubbub about Gotham? There isn’t much. I enjoy mostly anything to do with Batman, so I was curious as to how they would approach the material. My biggest problem is that all the interconnected stories of the major players in Gotham feel forced. Young Catwoman doesn’t need to be telling young Bruce Wayne how life on the streets is, it could be anyone or it could be learned differently. Why does [Poison] Ivy have to be a sad orphan girl? She doesn’t have to be a part of the show; her character serves no purpose other than a wink to the fans.

We spend most of our time in the Gotham City Police Department and yet we hardly know anyone on the force and are never given any real reason why the cops that are dirty are the way they are. It’s an underdeveloped show with no depth other than the lore of Batman. Efforts are focused in too many which ways that pertain to Batman and not enough on the main characters who actually serve purpose. There are moments where Gotham teases its full potential and allows itself to take a step away from Batman mythology; this is what I find fascinating. When Gotham can separate itself in order to tell an interesting story set within Gotham City, that’s when the show captures my interest.

Box Office Battlefield: The Transporter Refueled vs. A Walk in the Woods

Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. The weekend warriors of September 4, 2015 includes The Transporter Refueled, A Walk in the Woods, and Before We Go. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others and determine who will be victorious. Should you see ’em, skip ’em, or rent ’em? Find out below!

Last weekend, Straight Outta Compton straight capitalized on yet another poor delivery of new wide releases. We Are Your Friends made box office history in its debut as the fourth worst opening weekend for a new wide release film in more than 2,000 theaters. The Zac Efron led moving picture grossed only $1.76 million. Does an action reboot or a small Robert Redford indie stand a chance to capitalize on the weak selection as of late? Or will movie goers keep their hard earned cash and enjoy their Labor Day weekend? Never change the deal. This is the Box Office Battlefield:

The Transporter Refueled (Camille Delamarre) Rated PG-13 [96 min] – In the south of France, former special-ops mercenary Frank Martin enters into a game of chess with a femme-fatale and her three sidekicks who are looking for revenge against a sinister Russian kingpin. Starring Ed Skrein, Loan Chabanol, Ray Stevenson, and Lenn Kudrjawizki

My take:

With so many terrible movies in theaters lately, and my lack of exposure to The Transporter franchise, I decided to take a pass on The Transporter Refueled as my one skip weekend of the year. The action looks OK, but the story looks mediocre at best. And I don’t think this reboot looks as fun sans Jason Statham’s charisma. I liked Ed Skrein as Daario in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and he should have stayed there for a better opportunity to shine rather than get caught up in this waste of an effort film. I’m surprised The Transporter Refueled didn’t go straight to home video. WATCH IT ON NETFLIX OR SKIP IT!

A Walk in the Woods (Ken Kwapis) Rated R [104 min] – After spending two decades in England, Bill Bryson returns to the U.S., where he decides the best way to connect with his homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends. Starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson, and Mary Steenburgen

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 47% • Audience – 59%

“If I hadn’t known it was Bryson, A Walk In The Woods would just feel like some half-assed oldsploitation version of Wild starring a poor man’s odd couple with the comedic timing of a Google Translated Mexican sitcom from the eighties.” – Vince Mancini (FilmDrunk)

“It’s not a difficult picture to watch. All you want from A Walk in the Woods, honestly, is a chance to enjoy a couple of veteran actors. But the book’s comic tone hasn’t found a comfortable equivalent for the screen.” – Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune)

My take:

I’m not a hiker nor am I an elderly man going through a third/end-life crisis seeking to enjoy what time I have left on this planet – although I always try to keep a positive and optimistic mindset so I can carpe that diem. After watching the trailer for A Walk in the Woods I found similarities to Grumpy Old Men and The Bucket List. They’re movies that I can understand, but not necessarily would seek or find too resonating. I’m sure this film has its quirky “old people” jokes that can create a smirk, however I don’t think anyone is going to get anything new out of their viewing experience. WATCH IT ON NETFLIX!

Before We Go (Chris Evans) [Limited] Rated PG-13 [89 min] – Two strangers stuck in Manhattan for the night grow into each other’s most trusted confidants when an evening of unexpected adventure forces them to confront their fears and take control of their lives. Starring Chris Evans, Alice Eve, Emma Fitzpatrick, and Scott Evans

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 24% • Audience – 65%

“A missed train sets the stage for Chris Evans’ directorial debut, Before We Go, but dramatically speaking, this talky, contrived and ultimately tedious actors’ exercise never leaves the station.” – Scott Foundas (Variety)

My take:

As Chris Evans’ directorial debut, Before We Go looks like a good attempt at recreating the magic of Before Sunrise. However, in this instance, it feels as if it’s more about the shenanigans of the evening rather than an intimate night with two strangers getting to know each other on a personal level we can relate to. I think Before We Go has potential, but doesn’t have strong enough characters to make it a memorable experience. WATCH IT ON NETFLIX!

Who honestly wants to see a reboot of The Transporter without Jason Statham? A Walk in the Woods is playing in less than 2,000 theaters and is too narrowly focused with its target audience. And all other competitors over the past few weeks have flopped hard. But hey, at least Inside Out and Jurassic World are rereleasing this Labor Day weekend to give you a few, better options if you want to get out of the heat. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend will be:

Winner: Straight Outta Compton
