New Sneak Peek Offers More ‘Jem and the Holograms’ Details and Photos

It was only a year ago when the cast for the Jem and the Holograms movie was announced. In that time we have gained very little details, news, or images on the production that micro-budget horror producer Jason Blum from Blumhouse Productions is backing. Seeing that we are only six months away from its release, I feel as though the marketing team has awoken from their slumber to realize they need to start getting the word out.

Full disclosure, as much as you’d all like to think I spend my time wearing pink wigs and my face painted as I type this out, I have no history with Jem and the Holograms. I know of the cartoon and that’s about it. And when Blumhouse became the studio behind this movie, it raised a few eyebrows, mine included. The production house that brought us Paranormal Activity and Insidious, how could they tap into the psyche of teen girls?

They have dipped their toes outside the realm of genre features before with the Oscar winning Whiplash, as well as HBO’s The Normal Heart and The Jinx. So is this an adult romp for nostalgic Millennials? Director Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2: The Streets; G.I. Joe Retaliation) shed some light on the project in a recent interview with USA Today:

“It’s actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are? That’s the real soul of the movie.”

Many audiences today may relate this property to Hannah Montana, as the lead character Jerrica (Aubrey Peeples) takes on the alter ego of Jem. Chu continues:

“Jerrica is definitely a 21st-century sort of girl. She’s shy and scared to use her voice after the death of her father, who taught her guitar and would call her ‘Jem,’ yet still finds ways to make music even though she’s frightened of the stage. We see the transformation as she gets brought into it, getting seduced by it, and at the same time trying to find her real self in between those two identities.”

Peeles adds:

“She never wanted to pursue the big costumes, lots of makeup, all that stuff. But in a way it helps her hide and have the confidence to come out and be this persona.”

And so we have the band members, but now the supporting cast has also been revealed. Molly Ringwald will be playing Aunt Bailey, the legal guardian to sisters Jerrica and Kimber (Stefanie Scott), and their foster siblings Aja (Hayley Kiyoko) and Shana (Aurora Perrineau). And then we have Ryan Guzman, a Step Up veteran who enters the scene as the love interest, because we all need one of those, right? Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers; Whip It; August: Osage County) inhabits the role of the antagonist known as Erica Raymond, “a Starlight Music record executive.”

Check out the new production stills for the live-action adaptation of the hit ’80s cartoon here (Click on any photo below to being the image gallery):

It’s still not clear as to how we’re suppose to take this film. Whether it will be a fun romp like Pitch Perfect that services all ages, or more apt for tweens and young adults. I can only assume with the release of these images that a trailer should drop soon, which you can expect to find here once it drops.

There is no official plot synopsis yet, but here’s what IMDb.com has to say:

Music executive, Jerrica Benton, lives a secret, adventurous life as a glamorous rock star named Jem.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Jem and the Hogorams stars Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald, and Juliette Lewis. This film is set to release on October 23, 2015.

Brad Bird Confirms Involvement with ‘The Incredibles 2’ for Pixar

Brad Bird Confirms Involvement with 'The Incredibles 2' for Pixar

Animated sequels are an interesting business. They’re more easy to make since all the character models have been created, but rarely do they come across as sincere and it’s much harder to appease expectations the second time around. If there is one animated sequel I would ever want to see made it’s The Incredibles 2, which was confirmed in development a year ago by Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger. Now the original writer/director Brad Bird has confirmed to be well into the screenplay. Learn more after the break. Continue reading

Special ‘The Force Awakens’ Updates from Vanity Fair’s Star Wars Day Celebration

It’s Star Wars Day! And in celebration, Vanity Fair snagged an exclusive first look at the upcoming J.J. Abrams joint, a little film called Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The contemporary, pop culture and fashion mag brought portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz to shoot on location for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Leibovitz is no stranger to capturing iconic moments as she recently shot the Kanye West-Kim Kardashsian wedding dress cover for Vogue. Not only has VF pulled back the elusive SW curtain, but they have also confirmed a few character speculations many Bothans have been dying to know the answer to.

Thanks to this video, we are treated to our first look at Adam Driver on the set of The Force Awakens, who plays a Sith Lord by the name of Kylo Ren. What’s interesting about this incredible reveal is that it shows him in character without the mask, something the trailers have yet to include.

The photo shoot also brings us a closer look at Daisy Ridley in character as Rey who can be seen atop her speeder. (I got a chance to see the speeder in person at Star Wars Celebration last month.) There are also moments inside the Millennium Falcon’s cockpit with Ridley, as well as Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and John Boyega (Finn).

Now while those pointing fingers at Driver to be the man behind the mask can rest at ease knowing they were right, we’ve not had any clue as to who Oscar winner Lupito Nyong’o would be playing. From the Vanity Fair article published today, we learn that Lupita has donned a mo-cap suit to embody her CGI rendered character, Maz Katana, a space pirate whose good fortune allow her to own a castle with many colorful guests, which you can see below.

Another huge confirmation in this month’s issue is that Gwendoline Christie is in fact the chrome Stormtrooper who goes by the name of Captain Phasma. She is a leader amongst The First Order, the remnants of the Galactic Empire. And on the other side of the coin, the Rebel Alliance is now known as The Resistance – maybe they’ll sing “Do You Hear the Ewoks Sing”? One can assume that Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, will be one of the top pilots of the Resistance.

And on a hilarious note to end on, Abrams teased fans that he’d thought about killing the infamous Jar Jar Binks,

“I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks’s bones in the desert there. I’m serious! Only three people will notice, but they’ll love it.”

There are still many secrets to be uncovered, which we hope to see as we draw closer to the end of the year.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars John Boyega as Finn, Daisy Ridley as Kira Rey, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join the stars of the original trilogy, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, and Kenny Baker as R2-D2. The film is set to release on December 18, 2015.

May the Fourth be with you! This issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands on May 12, the digital edition will be out May 7.

First Look at Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn with ‘Suicide Squad’ in Costume

After many teases and controversy over the reveal of Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad, director David Ayer has now unveiled the villainous group in full costume. The first official image is sure to spark as many polarizing thoughts over Harley Quinn’s non jester-like appearance as there were for the Joker and his Juggalo tattoos. Fortunately for the costume department, this will take the focus for how muted everyone else looks.

Now that we have our Suicide Squad, or Task Force X if you want to refer to them by their official designation, it’s clear that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. want to continue down the path of a more grounded world like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Why change what worked, right? I’m fine with that, but the costumes look so bland and lifeless. There’s very little color compared to their comic book counterparts. At least give them a little more personality to them.

The ladies of the group stand out to me the most. Enchantress (Delevigne) looks like she came from a swamp, Katana (Fukuhara) has this mysterious ninja assassin thing going for her, and then we have punk rock Harley Quinn (Robbie) who looks like she’s trying to mirror the Joker’s look with the tattoos and the bling. The only thing that resembles the iconic Harley is the blonde pigtails, pail skin, and big, red-lipstick smile. There are definitely going to be some naysayers who disapprove, but I don’t think it’s worst get up the character has ever worn.

Pictured above (from left to right) is Adam Beach as Christopher Weiss aka Slipknot; Jai Courtney as George “Digger” Harkness aka Boomerang; Karen Fukuhara who is rumored to play Plastique, but clearly looks to be in costume as Tatsu Yamashiro aka Katana; Cara Delevingne as June Moone aka Enchantress; Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn; Will Smith as Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot; Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Waylon Jones aka Killer Croc; and Jay Hernandez as Chato Santana aka El Diablo.

(Click on the image below to get a closer look)

Behind the group photo on the backdrop reads, “Welcome to Belle Reve,” which is the prison facility that houses the Suicide Squad. The question I’d like to put out to the floor is, why is the Joker not present in this photo? Is he not an official member of the group? Will Task Force X be sent out to hunt down the Joker? Filming has just began, so we’ll hopefully get a teaser at Comic-Con as filming will wrap in August. One could assume at least that it will be the prime location to reveal footage and a plot synopsis.

For those worried about Deadshot not having his infamous mask, Will Smith’s Facebook page graciously answered that question with a new photo too:

Will Smith Deadshot in Mask Suicide Squad Official ImageAnd as if we had enough to worry about with whatever is going on with Leto’s “damaged” Joker, Ayer had to go and throw out the name Task Force X. Suicide Squad is a great, catchy nickname, but I think by throwing “Task Force X” into the mix it may confuse mainstream audiences who are not comic book readers or are not familiar with this ragtag group of villains.

But I digress.S What do you think of the costume choices for our anti-heroes?

Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad also stars Jared Leto as The Joker and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. This movie is set to be released in theaters on August 5, 2016.
