Neato: Netflix Sleeves Become Useful Canvases

Believe it or not, as annoying as the Netflix rental sleeves can be, they can also provide you with a canvas of opportunity. Some Netflix subscribers took the liberty of having some fun with their sleeves and slapped their art on them before they returned their movies back to the sweat shop where they keep all the elves stuffing more movie envelopes that get horribly scratched in the process. I mean come on, those DVDs are so badly scratched sometimes, I don’t know how they send them out like that. For shame. I digress, check out some other Netflix sleeve art after the jump!

Neato: Welcome to The Lord of the Rings: Middle-Lego-Earth

These days there is a convention for everything: robots, food, porn, comics, and even furries. Let me take you into the land of BrickWorld where everything LEGO is possible. LEGO is THE toy that allows you to create anything imaginable (see LEGO Sniper Rifle). A group of people put together a massive collaborative effort for this year’s BrickWorld 2011 convention in Wheeling, IL. They brought into fruition almost every element of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and built Middle-Earth brick by brick. It is almost inconceivable how amazing these models are. Chris Phipson wrote about this epic project at MOCpages, a site where you can share your LEGO creations to the world. You can check out a lot of his and other’s collaborative work after the jump!

Neato: Awesome Animal Beatbox

Let’s face it, the music industry is a dying breed. It has lost its edge and we are stuck with the same boring music we hear a 1000 times over with as much autotune as possible. Could Rebecca Black be foreshadowing the music industry’s future? Probably. But when little gems like, Animal Beatbox, directed by Damon Gameau, come into play, it brings  a sparkle of hope that there is some creativity left in this world. Damon Gameau won Tropfest 2011 Australia, the world’s largest short film festival. My hat goes off to you Mr. Gameau. Check out Animal Beatbox after the break for some real musical talent.

Neato: The Art of a Foley

What is a Foley you ask? Well a foley is a person who is in charge of imagining the elements that are made up of a sound to replicate it for actions in film. You’d never think that they would have to recreate all of the sounds you hear when you are watching a movie, but in fact, most of the sounds you hear are not recorded while filming the actors. They make all the extras whisper to capture the dialogue. To find out more about what a foley has up his sleeves, check out the great short documentary of foley artist Gary Hecker after the jump.

Neato: Clinton Jones’ ‘Cardboard Warfare’

Like Freddie Wong’s “Light Warfare,” Clinton Jones doesn’t hold back on creativity and fun independent film making. With a good mixture of special effects, well shot action sequences, intense music and suspenseful moments, “Cardboard Warfare” was really exciting and I hope these guys create more fun short films in the future. You can check it out after the jump or go to Jone’s aka pwnisher’s  YouTube page for an HD look at the video.

Neato: Live Action Toy Story Re-enactment

With the craze of Toy Story 3, the folks at CrissCrossMedia have put together a re-enactment of the opening scene from Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story. It’s not totally accurate (not Bo Peep), but you get the gist of it and have to give them credit for putting in the creative effort to make this. Check out the short video after the jump!
